City of Wyoming winter parking ordinance now in effect

Help keep Wyoming streets clear of snow this winter and avoid parking tickets by following the odd-even parking ordinance.

Odd-even winter parking restrictions

In effect from Dec. 1 – March 31, the ordinance requires people to alternate the side of the street they park on between 12 a.m. and 6 p.m. so plows can keep both sides of the street clear of snow. It also keeps roadways clear and accessible for drivers, snowplows and emergency vehicles during the winter.

Odd-even parking fines are $30 per violation received.

Odd-even parking at a glance

  • Helpful Tip: Between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., make sure to move vehicles to the side of the road matching the next day’s date.
  • Dates and Times: No parking on alternating sides of the street from midnight to 6 p.m., Dec. 1 until March 31.
  • Snow or No Snow: This ordinance is enforceable even when there is no snow.
  • Odd Dates: On odd dates, park on the side of the street with odd addresses – those that end with 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.
  • Even Dates: On even dates, park on the side of the street with even addresses – those that end with 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.
  • Cul-De-Sacs: In a cul-de-sac, only park on the street on even-numbered calendar days.
  • No Parking Signs: Regardless of odd-even status, parking is never permitted in designated “No Parking” zones.

Report violations of odd-even parking

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety works hard to address all calls for service as soon as possible. Reports of odd-even parking violations are important but they can often wait to be enforced when emergency calls are a priority.

Completing the Report an Odd-Even Parking Complaint Form helps DPS manage the enforcement of odd-even parking while allowing prioritization of emergency calls. As officers become available, every effort will be made to follow up with the report during the times and days listed. This helps manage workflow and address this safety violation.

Local book lovers can now sign up for Kent District Library’s (KDL) annual winter Let It Snow reading challenge. Adults and teens (age 11+) who read or listen to six books between Dec. 1 and Feb. 27 earn a collectible Let It Snow mug.

Participants who would like to complete more than six books can log four more titles, for a total of 10 books, by Feb. 27 and be automatically entered into a drawing to win a gift card to a local indie bookstore.

“Let It Snow is the perfect choose-your-own-reading adventure for adults and teens,” said KDL Programming Specialist Amber Elder. “You can reread your favorite books, pick up the next one from your TBR pile, look at Let It Snow displays in your local branch until a book speaks to you, or find a book in any of the category suggestions that our adult and teen librarians have provided.

“It’s a challenge that will keep you excited for your next book and that will keep you reading all winter long.”

Volunteers are collecting Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, Nov. 17–24.

Nearly 5,000 drop-off locations will open across the country in November, and shoebox packers can find their local drop-off locations in Michigan here.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has been collecting and delivering gift-filled shoeboxes to children including many who are suffering from war, poverty, disease and disaster.

Operation Christmas Child hopes to reach another 12 million children in 2025 with the hope of Jesus.

The project partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these tangible expressions of God’s love to children in need. Participants can donate $10 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to discover its destination.

“Samaritan’s Purse works around the world to help people in need, but it’s not about good works— it’s about the Gospel,” said Franklin Graham, President of Samaritan’s Purse.

Holiday gatherings can become more of a reality check than joyful reunions as relatives notice health and safety concerns in aging loved ones for the first time.

“People often rely on phone calls or texts to check on older loved ones throughout the year,” says Paula Lett, Social Services Manager for Care Resources, a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. “But without those regular in-person visits, signs that indicate a need for assistance can go unnoticed for months.”

Throughout much of her career, Lett has been on the frontlines of the post-holiday influx of people seeking senior care. Her colleague, Eric Millar, can also attest to the surge in inquiries.

“It can be a shock to the system for family members who haven’t been around all year to notice their older loved one has been struggling,” Millar says, noting that these holiday wake-up calls underscore the importance of more regular check-ins.

“Don’t wait until the holidays to face these issues,” Millar advocates. “Get into the holiday spirit of visiting loved ones year-round by carving out a couple of hours each month to go into mom or dad’s home. You don’t have to cook or clean. Just spend time together. It will mean more to them than you realize and also help you identify opportunities for support sooner.”

Looking for clues

Whenever visiting an aging loved one, Lett and Millar encourage families to take note of the state of the home. Are there piles of mail or trash? An overflowing kitchen sink or laundry hamper?

Monitoring for changes in physical health, personal hygiene and mood is also important.

“You might notice they’ve lost weight, appear disheveled or are wearing dirty clothes,” Millar explains. “Maybe they’re increasingly forgetful, irritable or confused.”

After identifying such signs, Lett cautions against falling into the assumption that nursing home placement is the only solution, especially when “there is so much help available through programs such as PACE to keep seniors living safely in their own homes.”

However, broaching the subject with an aging loved one requires great care. Millar recommends having the person they trust most talk one-on-one, rather than a group intervention. Focus the conversation around resources that can give more independence rather than take it away.

“Seek to understand the specific areas where they could benefit from assistance so they can continue living the life they want to live,” he says. “You can be firm about the fact that you’re going to help, but encourage them to choose where they want the help.”

Lett adds it can help to explain that the goal is to maintain their ability to remain in their own home and in control as much as possible while enhancing their health and safety.

“No one wants to be a burden on anyone else, so it can be difficult to accept help,” Lett explains. “Be sure to treat them as a person, not an object that is a liability to themselves. Reassure them that getting support doesn’t mean they can’t still be self-reliant. There are options to help meet their needs while maintaining their dignity and autonomy.”

Kent District Library is accepting nominations for the fourth annual Literacy Champion Award for outstanding leadership and advocacy of literacy. The award will go to one individual and one organization who does, or has done, something exceptional to promote literacy.

Nominations are open through Feb. 28, 2026 and may be submitted online at kdl.org/literacychampion. Winners will receive $1,000, a crystal trophy and public recognition.

“We’re proud to recognize those making a real difference in our community through literacy,” said Lance Werner, Executive Director of Kent District Library. “The Literacy Champion Award is our way of celebrating the individuals who are opening doors and changing lives through the power of reading.”

Winners will be announced next spring, celebrating one individual and one organization who has demonstrated leadership and exceptional achievement in advancing reading. Three finalists in each category will also be chosen.

Nominations will be reviewed by a panel from Kent District Library and its Board of Trustees.

Phishing tactics are evolving – here’s how to identify spoofs and scams

The internet has forever altered the flow of information on a global scale. We can pay homage to our ancestors who sent messages in bottles and men on camelbacks, but digital communication has changed the way humans interact for good.

That is not to say the evolution of the internet has been consistently humanitarian because, like a thief with a mask, phishers hide behind falsified identities of companies you know.

The evolution of phishing

Consumers Energy recently alerted customers to be on guard against a new scam threatening service shut off unless immediate payment is made. Through email and phone calls, scammers are spoofing company phone numbers and telling customers they need to pay a balance immediately, insisting payment be made via prepaid debit cards or gift cards.

“We know most people are careful not to give their money and personal information to strangers, but we want to make sure they’re alert of these criminals who are persistent and determined to con people out of their earnings,” said Jim Beechey, Consumers Energy’s Vice President of Information Technology and Security.

Everyone with a telephone or email address has likely been contacted by a phisher at some point. The scary part is, through the use of data breaches and social media stalking, many of these fraudulent messages actually contain true information. One key to recognizing a phishing attempt is the use of out-of-date information (ex: use a maiden name or an address from five years ago).

“These fraudsters are great at staying on top of the latest products, trends and technologies in order to find a way to steal money, confidential financial information or both,” said Nakia Mills, Vice President of Digital Marketing and Brand Strategy for Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Michigan.

According to BBB’s Scam Tracker Risk Report, the top ten riskiest scam types are:

  • Investment/Cryptocurrency 
  • Employment
  • Romance/Friendship
  • Online Purchase
  • Home Improvement
  • Phishing/Social Engineering
  • Advance Fee Loan
  • Travel/Vacation/Timeshare
  • Government Grant
  • Tech Support

What is phishing and spoofing?

Phishing is defined as the fraudulent practice of sending emails and messages purporting to be from reputable companies to trick people into revealing their personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

Spoofing is defined as someone disguising an email address, sender name, phone number or website URL – often by changing just one letter, symbol or number – to convince victims that they are interacting with a trusted source.

Phishing schemes will use spoofing techniques to falsify aliases and manipulate unsuspecting customers into giving criminals personal or sensitive information. (fbi.gov)

Warning signs to avoid digital scams

Mills said a recurring tactic of scammers is “relying on the person being targeted to act quickly without thinking or checking facts.”

According to Mills, the top five scam warning signs to watch for when interacting with someone virtually are:

  • Offers that appear too good to be true (tickets that are hard to acquire or a holiday toy that is not in stores) 
  • Someone forcing you to make a quick decision without time to do research or talk about it with others
  • Meeting someone online who consistently has an excuse not to meet in person or via videochat
  • A request to send money in order to receive money. This includes fake employment, fake government grants, scholarships, etc.
  • Insistence on payment in a specific way, especially via a gift card, money order or payment app

When asked about the damage these cons have inflicted on victims and their families, Consumers Energy Spokesperson Brian Wheeler stated that they do not have a metric for how many people have made payments to scammers, but that hundreds of people have been contacted by a spoofer of Consumers Energy.

Different types of scams

Scammers coming to a residence purporting to be a legitimate company official or contractor is a bold ploy used often. Both DTE and Consumers Energy state they will usually notify customers in advance of any such visit, whether through letters, emails or phone calls – but not always.

Beechey recommended asking to see identification badges before allowing contractors into your home. If doubts persist, call the official customer helpline telephone number of the “company” at your door. If they refuse to show identification or become agitated, DTE recommends locking the door and dialing 911.

Also be aware of trickier phone scams.

BBB released an article in 2024 (“Can you hear me?”) informing the public of a quick phone scam that involved callers asking, “Can you hear me?” several times. The goal was to trick people into saying “yes” so the caller could edit the audio and use the victim’s voice to confirm big purchases.

These scams may also be geared toward banking, vacation packages, warranties and even Medicare cards.

Scammers may also contact family members for “verification” of information or may utilize coercion in an attempt to obtain sensitive information. If this happens, BBB recommends hanging up the phone and notifying that family member immediately. (BBB Scam Alert)

“In addition to posing as government officials,” said Mills, “our most recent BBB Scam Tracker report found that the most impersonated organizations were Publishers Clearing House, [the] U.S. Postal Service, PayPal, Amazon and Spectrum.”

Take action

If you receive malicious looking emails, the BBB says to avoid clicking on links or replying. Instead, report it to your local BBB.

If you made a payment to Consumers Energy and think you are a victim of a scam, call 800-477-5050. Those who did not make a payment but believe they are a victim of a scam must file a police report with local law enforcement.

Updated Consumers Energy policy unlocks more energy bill assistance for those in need

Consumers Energy’s electric and natural gas customers who qualify for State Emergency Relief (SER) funds and haven’t received the full $500 annual payment credit may now qualify for additional assistance under a new Michigan Department of Health and Human Services policy in effect immediately.

State Emergency Relief dollars help certain income-qualified customers take control of their past due energy bills up to a maximum of $500. The one-time federal funds disbursed at the state level are distributed to customers who apply and whose household income is 150% of the federal poverty level or below.

How it works

Beginning July 7, new customer applicants who haven’t received relief in Fiscal Year 2025, which ends Sept. 30, are eligible to receive the $500 per commodity cap, regardless of their past-due balance.

Previous SER recipients who have already received funding since Oct. 1, 2024—but haven’t reached the $500 per commodity cap—can apply for the remaining amount starting July 11 through Sept. 30. These payments may result in a credit on the customer’s account.

“We’re dedicated to equity, accessibility and affordability for Michiganders who count on us for reliable electricity and natural gas,” said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president, chief customer and growth officer.

“Through our various energy savings programs, energy assistance offerings and partnering with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, we support the growing needs of our customers who experience challenges paying their bills.”

Under the former policy, a customer who owes $250 to keep their account active could apply and, if approved, get a credit paid back in that amount but would not have been eligible for additional relief in the same fiscal year. Under the new policy, however, that customer could now receive an additional $250 to meet the maximum annual allocation allowed of $500 if they have accumulated additional arrears.

Additional energy assistance

Last year, 540,000 customers received $38.4M in State Emergency Relief funding. In total, 137,000 families across 30 Michigan counties received some type of energy assistance. 

In addition to State Emergency Relief funds, there is additional help available for anyone who needs assistance with their energy bills by calling 2-1-1, a free resource that connects people with nonprofit organizations. Customers can also visit ConsumersEnergy.com/Assistance.

To make it easier for customers to find the help they need based on their situation, Consumers Energy recently launched “My Personalized Offerings,” an easy-to-use tool that empowers customers to identify and enroll in custom payment assistance and energy management programs. Michigan’s frigid winter has left its mark. For senior customers who may have seen a seasonal increase in their bills this winter, Consumers Energy stands ready to assist by connecting those ages 65+ with energy saving strategies and payment resources to help them pay their heating costs.

Through March 31, Consumers Energy will be proactively reaching out to select senior citizens with an opportunity to review seniors’ accounts and offer personalized payment assistance options to get them back in control of their energy bills.

“We want our customers to know that we are here for them 24/7, in any season,” said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s Vice President of Customer Experience. “And that means we’re here to help them save energy and save money.

“Whether it’s through our various energy saving programs or through our payment assistance options, we can help our neighbors most in need.”

Cost saving tips

Home heating costs account for about 30% of customers’ energy bills, with water heaters alone accounting for almost 15%. In addition to payment assistance options, Consumers Energy reminds customers there are some simple steps they can take to limit their usage and save even more.

One of the easiest ways to save is by installing a programmable smart thermostat. Doing so could save as much as 20 percent on heating costs. Customers typically save 1-3% for every degree they dial down their thermostat.

Seniors interested in participating in the Senior Check-in can call 888-535-9280 Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The Senior Check-ins will connect customers with the various payment assistance resources available that apply to their situation.

As a senior citizen, you qualify for the following assistance:

  • Winter Protection: Pay part of your charges through winter months while being protected from a service disconnect during the season.
  • Electric Senior Citizen Bill Credits: This income assistance credit is designed to help seniors on fixed incomes.
    • The Electric Senior Citizen provision helps you with your electric bill with an added credit of $4 to your bill each month. Qualifying customers must meet age requirements and be the head of the household.
    • If you are eligible to receive the Electric Income Assistance credit, you will no longer receive the Electric Senior Citizen credit.

  • Michigan Aging & Adult Services Agency: Local agencies that are located within communities around the state that provide a variety of senior services and activities.
  • Elder Law of Michigan: Older adults and people with disabilities can get help paying for the cost of basic needs like food, medicine, healthcare, utilities, housing and taxes.
  • If your income is at or below 110% of the federal poverty level, you may qualify for the Home Heating Credit. You may apply for a Home Heating Credit for the 2024 tax year to help pay your energy bill. Even if you live in a rented apartment, mobile home or your income does not require you to file taxes, you can still apply for this credit. The deadline for filing the 2024 Michigan Home Heating Credit Claim MI-1040CR-7 is Sept. 30.

How to provide comments

Women’s City Club (WCC) President Wendy Sturm and Union High School (UHS) Principal Aaron Roussey recently announced the beginning of the 2025 WCC Impact Award contest at a UHS junior class assembly.

Established in 2018 by the WCC, and developed in conjunction with UHS, this annual award will recognize two deserving high school juniors. Each winner will receive a $750 cash award to be used in any way the student sees fit, without stipulations.

“The Impact Award was established to support our mission and to provide students with a means to pursue their dreams,” said Wendy Sturm, WCC President.

Submission details

Entries submission began in December 2024, and remain open until Feb. 14, 2025. To apply, students present a piece of work that identifies and describes a personal role model – someone who has inspired them to achieve their own excellence.

Students apply by filling out a short form with a personal statement and their chosen form of expression-writing, drawing, poetry, painting, photography, a musical composition or a song.

While speaking to UHS students at the class assembly, Sturm said, “The whole idea of this is to help you with that thinking process and hopefully inspire you to become an impactful person for someone else.”

The 2025 winning entries will be chosen and announced by a committee of UHS administrators, teachers and counselors no later than Feb. 28.

Award winners will be honored with a luncheon presentation at Mayflower Congregational Church in April. During the luncheon, the winners will have an opportunity to talk with WCC members and will be presented with a scholarship certificate and award money.

Avenues of personal insight

With UHS students attending from all over the world, Impact Award entries are varied and provide insight into the students’ lives.

“They are very personal,” UHS Assistant Principal Dana Bachelder said of the entries at the 2024 award luncheon. “Many times when we read [the entries], we’re learning a little bit about where they came from, what is important to them, things that they’ve been through.”

Terrell Daniels won the 2023 Impact Award with an essay featuring his father and his impact on Daniels throughout the years. Daniels said he was happy and surprised when told he was an Award winner.

“I had never won an award, especially for an essay,” said Daniels. “Winning it made me feel accomplished.”

Daniels went on to say that winning the Impact Award also accomplished a personal goal.

“I always wanted to better myself and challenge myself. By participating in the competition and winning, it made me gain more confidence in myself and my capabilities, and motivated me to keep pursuing my goals.”

Daniels chose to put his winnings toward his savings to help him reach those goals.

In 2024, UHS students Dilanny Perez and Nebyat Gebrehiwot received the Impact Award.

Perez’s entry was a written essay about William D. Swenson, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013. Perez said she learned about bravery, loyalty and courage, and was inspired to strive for those things in her own life.

Gebrehiwot’s winning entry depicting the cultural dress of Eritrean women was inspired by her mother. The painting was Nebyat’s tribute to the women of her native African country who strive for gender equality and work to empower other women.

UHS Principal Aaron Roussey said 2024 saw the most program entries to date, and anticipates an equal amount – or more – this year.

“It is a fantastic opportunity,” Roussey told students at the assembly.

Make your own impact

Sturm said she enjoys receiving updates on previous award winners and seeing them mature and grow.

“Every year we receive updates on past award winners and learn how these students continue to develop and grow in confidence and leadership to become role models for others,” said Sturm.

Daniels, currently pursuing an astrophysics degree at Michigan State University, urges all students with even a slight interest in the Impact Award competition to submit an entry.

“In life, it’s easy to tell yourself that you aren’t good enough for something or that there’s no way you could win/accomplish something, but you can!” said Daniels. “There were winners before you who probably thought the same thing, but look what happened to them.

“It starts with you. Make your impact and share it to the world.”

How to save

Home heating costs account for about 30% of customers’ energy bills, with water heaters alone accounting for almost 15%. By addressing these two key areas of consumption, customers can take control and maximize their cost savings.

One of the easiest ways to save is by installing a programmable smart thermostat now that the heating season has started. Doing so could save as much as 20% on heating costs. Customers typically save 1%-3% for every degree they dial down their thermostat.   • Have your heating system tuned up and inspected by a service professional and replace your furnace filter. If you furnace can breathe more easily it will use less energy.

  • Make sure your attic, basement, garage, and exterior doors are closed to prevent cold drafts from getting in and heat from getting out. A gap of just one-eighth of an inch around your windows or doors is like having a softball size hole in them, allowing cold air in and making your furnace work harder to accommodate for that extra cold air.

  • Turn on your ceiling fan. Ceiling fans set at a slow speed can push warm air away that rises to the ceiling and move it around the room without creating a chilling breeze.

  • When it comes to savings on heating your water, take a shower instead of a bath which uses less hot water.

  • Set your water heater temperature at 120 degrees. By lowering the temperature, you can cut water heating bills without sacrificing comfort.

  • Save even more by setting your water heater to “on vacation” (if your unit has this feature) when you’re away from home more than two days.

Kent District Library (KDL) is encouraging adults to get “On the Same Page” with reading.

KDL is thrilled to announce the books that will build community as everyone reads and discusses the same titles  ̶ Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange and Martyr by Kaveh Akbar.

“Join us for On the Same Page, where our community comes together through the shared experience of reading,” said Hennie Vaandrager, Programming and Outreach Manager at KDL. “Dive into two thought-provoking books and engage in enriching discussions with fellow readers.

On the Same Page will include book discussions and programs this spring focused on the themes in the books.

“Nobody asked me”: How to have holiday conversations with aging family members

Various changes take place as we age, many of them unwanted.

“Things happen to you [during aging], and they don’t happen on your terms,” says Rev. Howard C. Earle Jr., Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Care for Beacon Hill at Eastgate. “As we age, things start to happen – whether we want them to or not.”

For some, holiday celebrations are a time when family members measure the decline in mental and physical health of elderly parents or grandparents. That decline often leads to tough conversations such as: “Dad, it’s time to stop driving – for your safety and others” or “Mom, we don’t need you to host Christmas this year – come to dinner at our house and just enjoy.”

Though these well-intentioned conversations come from a place of caring, Earle says the elderly often do not hear it that way.

Nobody asked me…

Whether our bodies begin to break down and fail, our life partner dies, we slip and fall, or we simply can’t care for ourselves any longer, these changes are out of our control and often frustrating because they can mean having our independence abruptly taken away.

“There was no real outlet where there could be some real transparency and sense of community to process what [the elderly] feel,” says Earle.

Seeing the need for such an outlet, Earle began an ongoing weekly discussion series titled “Nobody Asked Me.”

“We created this space where we could be totally honest about what we feel as we enter into these phases and seasons of life,” says Earle.

For the past two years, Earle has led various discussions on aging each Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Residents talk through their feelings about changes that happen with aging, and feature topics such as health, grief, technology, activities…and holidays.

As we enter the holiday season, Earle is also conducting a special holiday series called Hope for the Holidays. “It’s the same concept,” says Earle. “It’s about processing what they feel regarding anything concerning life.”

Earle leads the discussion with “Nobody asked me…” and then follows it up with an issue such as “…if I wanted to give up my keys.” The discussion then revolves around all things connected to that experience.

Earle says the weekly discussions are one piece of Beacon Hill programming that has resonated with all residents and become a valuable resource.

Though Earle is a chaplain, he says Nobody Asked Me discussions are not faith-based, intentionally generating conversation from a life perspective.

“It doesn’t matter what your religion is, you get old,” says Earle. “Everybody gets old, and everybody feels some kind of way about getting old.”

Think before speaking

When asked what advice he would give to younger generations as they prepare for family celebrations, Earle says to be patient, intentional and considerate.

“Senior adults need to know that they still matter,” says Earle. “Be intentionally affirming but also be sensitive.”

Earle cautions against generalizing the elderly by labeling them mean or grumpy. Instead, be mindful of what it might feel like to not see or hear well, making it difficult to feel part of the surrounding conversations and festivities.

“Be as thoughtful as you can…and try to be open to what some of these realities are.”

Live life on your terms 

Each week, Earle reminds residents that they are alive – and encourages them to live life on their own terms by taking advantage of opportunities such as exploring, investing in new relationships and learning new things.

“Rather than thinking of senior living as waiting until you die, think of it as living until you do,” says Earle. “You get to decide what living will look like.

“Living is going to look different for every person, but some things are going to be fundamental: remain relational, stay engaged, don’t isolate, don’t withdraw, have fun, laugh, learn. Those are things that I believe enrich life and make life worth living.”

  • Look for people present
  • Pre-walk the route or neighborhood you will be trick-or-treating in

Work on Safety Skills

  • Stay with an adult when walking
  • Look both ways before crossing the street
  • Stick to the sidewalk or edge of the road, not the middle of the street

Reminders for Community Members

  • Think about ways you can provide a more inclusive experience
  • Non-food treats such as pencils, stickers, or small toys
  • Limit scary or flashing decorations
  • Some kids may not have the verbal skills to say “Trick-or-Treat” or “Thank You” or feel comfortable wearing a costume – and that’s okay!

Kent County Department of Public Works releases fall recycling guide for residents

The Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW) has released its annual fall recycling guide, which shows residents how to properly dispose of common household items.

The fall recycling guide highlights items that are commonly used in the fall – like disposable coffee cups, soup cartons, jugs, foil and cans – that can be recycled, but are often thrown away and are placed in a landfill. It also shows items that are not recyclable but can still be disposed of in a way that avoids landfilling.

“Each year we are proud to help Kent County residents take steps to reduce their landfill waste with the Fall Recycling Guide,” said Dar Baas, director of the DPW. “We can all do our part to protect our land, air and water and have more sustainable fall season for the benefit of our whole community.”

Back-to-School Jitters: Tips to help your child prepare for school

Many students feel anxiety as a new school year approaches, no matter their age.

Board certified behavior analyst Katrina Newman of Wedgwood Christian Services (WCS) has developed a 10-point tip sheet to help parents and children prepare for the upcoming school year.

Due to her prior experience as a teacher and currently part of the after school program of the WCS Autism Center for Child Development (ACCD), Newman recognizes that children with autism often struggle with change more than most.

The carefully crafted tip sheet aims to ensure that parents and children – with and without autism – start the year off in comfortable fashion.

Alleviating back-to-school jitters

“Most kids on the spectrum, or even not on the spectrum, feel anxious about going from summer to school,” said Newman. “It’s a big change.

“Anytime there’s a change in routine, it’s really important to have a plan and to practice. That really makes your child more comfortable and helps them to know what to expect.”

Much of the anxiety that comes with starting a new school year can come from not knowing what to expect when they walk in the school doors for the first time.

Some common questions youth have are: Where do we enter the school? Where do we line up? What’s the routine? Did anything change over the summer? Other questions may revolve around getting on the bus for the first time, carpooling for the first time, or having to walk down to the lunchroom.

Having the answers to those questions before the first day of school, Newman says, is really important.

Practice makes perfect

Many schools offer open houses the week before school to help alleviate some of that anxiety. However, there are several other options for parents with anxious children.

“It’s really important to stress that walking through the parking lot and walking through the hallways can be really intimidating, so you want to make sure you practice for safety and that kids know where they’re supposed to go,” says Newman.



Setting up a station at home for notes and permission slips that parents can check regularly also helps. “Have a folder so everybody knows where to put them and parents can check that folder,” Newman says.

Having kids practice their school sleep schedule in advance is also beneficial because it takes 2-3 weeks for our bodies to get used to the change. Even practicing that change a few days in advance can be worthwhile.

“Being consistent, that’s really important,” says Newman. “Whenever you do start it, just keep it going so that their body and their rhythms can get used to getting up a little earlier and going to bed a little earlier then in the summer.”



For children who struggle more with social anxiety, role-playing can be beneficial.

“It’s important to practice introducing yourself and role-play making friends,” Newman says, adding that it can be as simple as telling someone your name, asking for that person’s name, and trying to find something in common with them.

“You might point out something like, ‘You have a Minecraft shirt on – I love Minecraft. What’s your favorite way to play?’” says Newman. “Just looking at those visual cues and trying to connect with people, that’s an important skill.”

Gaining perspective through books

There is also value in reading books to younger children that focus on back-to-school jitters.

Kids might relate to the main character who also feels anxiety or is unsure what to expect. They may also simply feel excitement.

“As they read, they’ll have a pretty good idea of what the first day will look like,” says Newman. “[The book] has a lot of details that they might not bring up, but then after reading the book you can discuss that. It’s really good to open up that conversation.”

How to start a conversation with your child

For parents who are unsure how to approach their child about whether or not they feel anxious, Newman says to keep it simple.

“Just have a simple conversation where you ask them, ‘What do you think about going back to school? We’re going back next Tuesday, what are you thinking about?’” Newman says. “That way it’s more that they can tell you if they’re excited, they can tell you if they’re worried. They get to tell you how they feel instead of you saying: ‘Are you worried?’

Is routine necessary?

Humans, regardless of age, lifestyle, or background, thrive on routine and benefit from having an established schedule.

According to the Blue Sprig website, routines are key to helping us thrive because routine comes naturally, provides stress relief and brings order to an otherwise chaotic world.

Routines are particularly helpful for children with autism due to the repetitive patterns of behavior, activities, and hobbies. The adherence to an established routine can be a powerful tool in bringing stability and comfort to any child’s life.

Daily routines can:

  • Build a stronger caregiver-child connection
  • Reduce power struggles and stress
  • Improve cooperation
  • Foster a genuine sense of ownership over their day
  • Create an environment of security and comfort

Removing any routine in a child’s life can be stressful. Newman says the most important thing is to talk about all changes in routine with kids, emphasizing what they can expect during that season of change.

For some children heading back to school this fall, their biggest challenge may not be reading or math but, rather, something else that’s critical to their academic success: eating meals at school.

Children can experience all types of difficulties with eating, from limited diets (“picky eating”) to feeding and swallowing disorders, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Feeding challenges may occur due to a medical problem or in conjunction with other developmental differences or disorders.

Regardless of the reason, all children need appropriate nutrition and hydration to learn and participate in the school day.

Cafeteria Struggles

The cafeteria can present numerous challenges for children who have difficulty eating. These include:

  • Overwhelming sensory environment. The cafeteria can be loud, crowded, and hot. The sights and smells may bother some kids. The tables may be sticky, and the cafeteria benches may be uncomfortable. None of these factors makes eating easy or fun. Some students may require a distraction-free environment to safely eat.
  • Time constraints. Students often have a small amount of time to eat—usually, much shorter than they are used to having at home. Students receiving feeding and/or swallowing treatment may need more time to eat. This accommodation may be included in a child’s individualized education program (IEP).
  • School-based food restrictions. Some schools have rules about foods that children can or cannot bring, such as no peanut products. For kids who have limited diets, it’s not always easy to find alternatives to a preferred food. Also, some children may not have options if they are provided free or reduced-price meals at school. If a student has a documented feeding or swallowing disorder and requires a modified diet, then the school district’s food services program must offer the meal accommodations recommended in the student’s feeding and swallowing plan.

Twelve Tips for Success

ASHA offers these tips to parents and caregivers to help their child eat successfully in the school setting:

  1. Make their lunch gear fun. Let kids pick out a lunchbox with their favorite character or theme, or a Thermos® or bento box of their choice. Alternatively, have them decorate or personalize a basic lunchbox or other items that they already have.
  2. Help them prepare. Have kids practice eating in the time they’ll be given at school. Try this for a few days before school starts. If you’re sending in containers or prepackaged food or drinks, make sure that they can open them first before packing such items in their lunchbox.
  3. Go grocery shopping together. Look for new items that they may want to bring—or meal ideas to try. Be sure to try them at home first.
  4. Brainstorm ideas. Write out a menu of options that are reasonable for you to prepare. Make sure that these foods can also be eaten at school easily (e.g., foods that don’t need to be cut up or kept at a very specific temperature). Have them choose their lunch from that menu each day.
  5. Let them pack their meal. Kids love to take ownership and show some independence. They’ll be much more likely to eat what they choose to pack. If you don’t feel comfortable giving them total control, offer choices—let them pick one “main course,” one “side dish,” and one “dessert” out of items that you have pre-selected. Do this the night before, so you aren’t stressed or in a rush the next morning.
  6. Troubleshoot together. Ask your child what makes eating in the cafeteria difficult. For example, maybe they don’t have enough time to eat when they buy lunch. Talk it through with them and see if you can solve the issue together.
  7. Send foods that your child is comfortable eating. You may desperately want to expand your child’s diet, but you also want to maximize the likelihood that they’ll eat at school so they’re nourished properly during the day. Save the experimentation for home.
  8. Aim for foods that will keep them full, but don’t stress over perfect meals. Ideal foods are ones that are protein-rich and/or high in fiber because they’ll keep kids full for longer. But remember, the best foods are the ones that your child will actually eat.
  9. Don’t obsess over what they didn’t eat. It’s frustrating when you spend time carefully packing a lunch—only to notice that it comes home lukewarm and untouched. Ask your child why they didn’t eat their meal: Did they not like it? Or did they just not have time to eat it? Try not to scold them about the uneaten food.
  10. Arrange for your child to have a lunch buddy. Eating with a friend is always more fun. A lunch buddy can be a support—and even a role model—for trying new foods. Talk to the school staff about finding a willing peer for this role.
  11. Talk to the cafeteria manager or other school staff. If your child is provided meals at school and isn’t eating what is served, check with the school about alternative options. If a child is regularly not eating the food provided, then this lack of needed nutrition likely will impact their learning and/or behavior.
  12. Help your child to advocate for themselves. If your child has an IEP with feeding and swallowing goals and accommodations, help them understand what their goals are and what they can safely eat.

Getting Help for Feeding Problems

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) help children who have difficulties with their feeding and swallowing. Feeding and swallowing disorders can lead to health, learning, and social problems, so it’s important not to minimize these challenges.

SLPs can help children try new foods or textures, can help parents feel more confident feeding their child, and can provide feeding therapy (e.g., using certain exercises to strengthen the muscles in their mouth, moving their tongue around more while eating or drinking).

Children with a diagnosed feeding or swallowing disorder may need additional support eating in school, including modified food and drink consistencies. These students should have an IEP or 504 plan to guide school-based treatment and accommodations.

They also may have a swallowing and feeding program (which is typically designed by an SLP) and/or an individual health plan (which is typically designed by a school nurse).

If you have concerns about your child’s eating, talk to your pediatrician and seek an evaluation from the school-based SLP or from a private SLP who specializes in feeding and swallowing. You can find one at www.asha.org/profind.

Michigan author Johnathan Rand will be a guest reader at Garfield Park’s Storytime in the Park on Tuesday, July 30 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Well-known among young readers throughout the state for his Michigan Chillers and American Chillers book series, Rand believes in the power of storytelling.

“Reading is great for everyone, and the earlier we begin, the better,” says Rand. “I think reading/storytelling is what really fires our imaginations, at least early in life.

“Fun events like Garfield Park keep kids engaged and reading throughout the summer months.”

Keeping kids engaged is vital in preventing “summer slide.” Summer slide refers to a decline in reading, writing, math and science skills during the summer months when youth are not in school.

Storytime in the Park was founded by Dr. Barbara Lubic, GVSU Associate Professor, and Barbara Bush of Sundaes in the Heights in an effort to keep kids active in learning throughout the summer months.

Now in its 15th year, Storytime in the Park takes place at Garfield Park every Tuesday, June through August, from 6:30-8 p.m. A special event is featured each week, along with read-alouds throughout the night.

Each attending child receives a free book, and every family member gets free ice cream.

Rand traces his own love of reading back to when his parents read to him as a child.

“I loved stories, and was fascinated by the other worlds I was transported to. Additionally, both of my parents read for pleasure, and I saw them reading quite often. We had books readily available all over the house, and I thought that books were cool.”

Rand admits that he began reading at an early age because he thought that was what all grown-ups did.

“I wanted to be a grown-up as quickly as possible. Whether or not I actually grew up is debatable, but my love of reading and stories continues to grow even to this day.”

Creativity = Freedom

A love for reading, Rand says, is far more than just enjoying a story.

“When children read a book that excites them, often they desire to write their own stories,” says Rand. “They begin learning how to create, how to plan and form stories in their head even before they put them down on paper.

“Years ago, Frederick Douglass said that reading is ‘the path from slavery to freedom.’ Over 100 years later, the late Carl Sagan quoted that phrase and added that ‘there are many types of slavery and many types of freedom, but reading is still the path.’”

Rand’s experiences as a writer and instructor have shown him that the word successful carries a different meaning for him than it does for others.

“One of the most exciting things I’ve seen in kids who attended Author Quest (our summer writing camp for kids), is how so many of these children have grown up to be happy, successful adults,” says Rand.

“And when I say ‘successful,’ I’m not talking about good jobs with a stable income. I’m talking about true happiness, living life creatively, with a fulfilling, worthwhile purpose.”

Rand continued to say that while many of those children did not embark upon a path of writing, the reading and writing skills they cultivated in their youth had a direct and positive effect on their future.

Funny, offbeat and irreverent

The Michigan author is looking forward to the Storytime event and says he hopes to meet many parents because he believes the love of reading begins in the home.

However, the author also simply enjoys talking with youth of all ages. This has led Rand to speak at thousands of schools and teach writing skills through Author Quest.

“I make it no secret that I take a very guilty pleasure in my presentation to kids of all ages,” says Rand. “It’s important for me to get my message across, and that message really has nothing to do with the books I write.”

Though Rand loves hearing that children enjoy his books and appreciates the ability to earn his living through storytelling, he is aware not all children will enjoy the books he writes. And that is fine with him.

“I designed my program to be funny, a little offbeat and irreverent, and engaging. The message that I want to drive home is very clear: if you can read well and you can write well, you’re on your way to doing anything.”

When Rand speaks at schools, he takes it very seriously and gives it his all.

“I know it sounds strange, but the more I give, the more I seem to get,” says Rand. “It really is give and take, and my programs for kids have become a big part of what I do.”

Sharing creativity and a…Bigfoot Beast?

Rand plans to share some of his own background as well as read from his new Michigan Chillers novel, #21: Boyne City Bigfoot Beast, set to be released this summer.

“I’d like to combine a little bit of background information about myself in order to give kids a jump start with their own creativity, to let them know that they can do the same thing,” says Rand. “They can write a book, right here, right now.”

Globally, an estimated 736 million women aged 15 and older—almost one in three—have been subjected to physical violence at least once in their life, according to UN Women. This figure does not include sexual harassment.

Reggie Macon, owner and instructor of Battle Ground JKD LLC, is dedicated to ensuring women and children are able to protect themselves from these senseless acts of violence.

In an effort to provide local women with the resources necessary to be confident in their everyday lives, Macon is offering a free EmpowerHer self-defense class. The class will take place at Boston Square Christian Reformed Church on Friday, July 26, from 6-8 p.m.

Why self-defense is important

“As an instructor, I think it’s important to learn some type of self-defense skill,” said Macon. “I’d rather have the women know it and not need it, than need it and not know.

“With everything that goes in the world, it will also give them a sense of awareness and confidence in their everyday life.”

At the EmpowerHer event, women will learn basic strikes, situational awareness, how to read body language, and tips on maximizing verbal and nonverbal communication.

“Self-defense is important as a woman because it gives you the confidence to defend yourself against an attacker,” said Macon’s wife and co-owner of Battle Ground, Chandra Macon.

“As a mother, it’s important to make sure our daughters have the knowledge of how to get away from an attacker as we cannot be with our children all day, everyday – especially as they get older and want to hang out with friends at the mall.”

Chandra went on to say that class participants will gain a better understanding of the tools they can use when in uncomfortable situations, generating confidence.

“This can also help you in everyday life where you may have been struggling to speak up before, but now have the confidence to speak up for your piece,” said Chandra.

“I’ve seen firsthand at sporting events where other kids navigate toward the larger crowds to fit in. Not my child; she decided not to. Proud moment for sure, because that tells me she’s okay to stand on her own – as that’s what leaders do! Anything can happen in larger crowds, and you don’t want to be guilty by association.”

Macon encourages local women to attend this free event and gain tools and resources to help protect themselves and their loved ones.

Changing lives: Kent County women give back to the community in big ways

Women Who Care of Kent County (WWCKC) only meets four times a year. Yet these women are changing the lives of local residents in significant ways.

For the past 11 years, West Michigan women have come together to help local non-profit groups. WWCKC meets quarterly to promote and then donate to local charitable organizations.

Jessica Tomac, Edward Jones Financial Advisor and WCC member, appreciates the opportunity WWC provides to contribute to her community without a huge time commitment attached.

“I really wanted to be a part of a group to give back to the community but didn’t have a ton of time,” said Tomac.

As a mother holding down a professional career, Tomac found it difficult to find the time to research organizations to which she might be able to contribute, much less become involved in them. WWC provided an opportunity to learn about several local non-profits – and give back – without a lengthy time commitment.

How it works

At each quarterly meeting, three members are each given the chance to present about a Kent County non-profit they believe is deserving of a WWC donation.

“They have five minutes to present, five minutes for questions, and then after all three are presented, we vote,” said Tomac.

Each member donates $100 to the winning non-profit.

“We find out right then and there who wins, and we all write our check for $100 to that non-profit,” said Tomac. “But then you’re done. And that’s just four times a year.”

Members are able to write additional checks to other non-profit organizations presented if they so desire. All money goes directly to the non-profits selected.

“​​We, as Women Who Care of Kent County, don’t earn any money,” said Tomac. “We don’t raise any money, we don’t have any marketing dollars. Your $100 check gets written right to the non-profit so there is no money lost.”

One hour = a big impact

Tomac says her favorite part of WWC is hearing back from the selected non-profit about the impact made through that donation.

“When you think about your $100 now becoming $15,000 or $20,000 or $30,000, your impact is so much more,” said Tomac. “And it has changed the lives of people who couldn’t have housing, or kids who needed power wheelchairs, or diapers for kiddos whose parents didn’t have money for formula and diapers.

“It is huge, and it took you one hour to make that impact. It’s pretty remarkable.”

Though each quarterly WWC donation can be given as general aid to the non-profit chosen, Tomac said the presentations are typically aimed at a specific need.

“Usually it’s presented with: What is this need, and how is this [donation] going to help,” said Tomac.

Any non-profit can be brought forward at WWC meetings. Tomac said the Kent County chapter has provided transportation vehicles for organizations, medical equipment, equipment for musical groups, provisions for the elderly community, and more.

“The member just has to be educated enough to speak about whatever it is that they’ve chosen,” said Tomac.

“Most of us either know about an organization, or something happens in the community and we say, how can we help them more? Ninety-nine percent of the time, a lot of the members are either on the board or volunteer at a lot of these organizations.”

Changing lives together

To date, WWCKC has raised over $630,000 for over 61 Kent County non-profit organizations.

This West Michigan chapter has 150 members and a foundation grant, allowing for each non-profit to receive a considerable gift.

WWCKC membership is open to all women residing in West Michigan. However, WWC is making an impact in more than just our small state.

As part of the international 100 Who Care Alliance, WWC consists of approximately 750 operational chapters worldwide.

WWC recognizes strength in each individual, and how that strength becomes a powerful force for good that lifts up a community when they are brought together.

Tomac urges community members to visit a chapter that aligns with their time and location needs, and see what WWC is all about.

“It’s easy, and doesn’t take a lot of time to have a big impact,” Tomac said, adding emphasis to the simplicity aspect of WWC. “For me, that was key. You get pulled in so many directions, and you only have so much time.”

With thousands of non-profit organizations in Kent County, Tomac believes WWC provides a philanthropic avenue while educating the community about those organizations.

“It’s a really powerful way to get together – and it is only 4 hours a year!”

Prom night safety: Tips on encouraging teens to prioritize safety and make responsible choices

As prom season approaches, it’s important to encourage teens to prioritize safety and make smart choices while planning their prom night.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one in three alcohol-related teen traffic fatalities occur during prom season, from April to June. American Medical Response Western Michigan would like to encourage students to make the Prom Promise to prioritize responsible behavior.
 

“Attending a high school prom should be a memorable event for all the right reasons,” said John Robben, Regional Director for Western Michigan from American Medical Response. “Talk to your teens and friends before prom night about making responsible choices and keeping their safety, and their peer’s safety, a top priority.”

American Medical Response offers these tips to keep in mind for a fun and safe prom: 

  • Stay sober. Avoid alcohol and drugs, as they can impair your judgement and put you in danger. 
  • Under no circumstances should high school prom attendees drink alcohol. But if you have consumed alcohol, hand your keys to a sober driver so you can get home safely.
  • Plan ahead. Make transportation arrangements in advance, whether it’s with a designated driver, a ride-sharing service, or another option. 
  • Travel in groups. Stick with friends and avoid walking or driving alone. 
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious and report any concerning behavior to a trusted adult or authority figure. 
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the night to avoid dehydration. 
  • Have a backup plan. In case of an emergency, make sure you have important phone numbers readily available. 
  • Don’t let friends drive drunk. If one of your friends has had too much to drink, don’t let them get behind the wheel. Take their keys and help to find them a safe ride home.

Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance have awarded Doyle & Ogden Inc. a 2024 Make More Happen Award for its volunteerism with Del J. & Jean B. Doyle Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite in transforming our world.

The award includes an initial donation of $5,000 for Del J. & Jean B. Doyle Family Foundation and its Coats for Kids program, which can be doubled to $10,000 just by having community supporters vote online.

The Doyle & Ogden Inc. and Del J. & Jean B. Doyle Family Foundation community story will be highlighted on the official Make More Happen microsite. Supporters can vote to help the team reach their donation goal.

If the featured story receives at least 500 votes, the $5,000 donation will be raised to $10,000.

A legacy of warmth and care

The Del J. & Jean B. Doyle Family Foundation was established in 2005 as a tribute to the founder of Doyle & Ogden, Del J. Doyle and his wife Jean, to continue their legacy of philanthropy and volunteerism.

As a part of this organization, Doyle & Ogden created the Coats for Kids program in 2009, providing winter coats to elementary children whose families are unable to afford one.

West Michigan winters are brutal, and a large percentage of children in need walk to school. Without a warm winter coat, students do not attend school. Subsequently, they do not have breakfast and lunch that day or receive their sack supper from Kids’ Food Basket. Without proper nutrition, students then fall behind in their education.

The $10,000 donation will allow the organization to supply an estimated 500 children with winter coats and expand the number of schools benefiting from this program.

“We are honored and incredibly grateful for being awarded the 2024 Make More Happen Award so we can continue to help our community and give back even more to local schools,” said Mike Doyle, agency owner and president of Doyle & Ogden. “The Coats for Kids program has had a significant impact in the Grand Rapids area and are thrilled to double the donation with community support.”

Expanding donations

In 2023, a total of 1,202 new winter coats were distributed among 18 schools and organizations in need. This year marks 15 years of the Coats for Kids program, and the agency is delivering more coats than ever.

The $10,000 donation is vital in continuing to provide winter coats to those in need.

The entire team at Doyle & Ogden assists with the Coats for Kids program. The agency holds internal fundraisers and solicits donations from partners. Several staff members have knitted scarves and hats for each coat donated.

“Recognizing independent agents’ dedication to their communities and nonprofit partners is what the Make More Happen Awards is all about,” said Lisa Hartt, Safeco Insurance Midwest Region Senior Territory Manager. “Doyle & Ogden is a shining example of the amazing work independent agents do in Michigan, and we hope sharing inspiring stories motivates others to do the same.”

Apply for the Make More Happen Award

Throughout 2024, Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance will select up to 37 independent agents nationwide for a Make More Happen Award. They will donate up to $370,000 to the nonprofits they support.

Agencies became eligible for the award by submitting an application and photos demonstrating their commitment to a specific nonprofit.

Unlimited access to online content raises concerns about increased risks to adolescents and teens

Concerns are being raised about the harmful ramifications of self-diagnosis and increases of mental illness due to adolescents and teens having unlimited access to online content.

Wedgwood Christian Services (WCS) Director of Clinical Services Brina Tiemeyer recently talked with WKTV Journal about children – especially teens – having devices and 24/7 access to the internet. This concern stems from the alarming uptick in depression, anxiety, loneliness and suicide resulting from social media.

“We may often think of the ability to connect on social media and access to endless content online as a huge benefit to awareness of a variety of mental health challenges,” said Tiemeyer.

While there is certainly something to be said for increased accessibility to resources for those in communities where it is lacking, and the ability to find a wider circle of support of people dealing with similar challenges, the book and other research highlights that it can also come with some risks for children, teens and young adults, most notably self-diagnosis.”

While social media can be a place where teens can get advice and tips, it does not allow for fact-checking.

“A lot of the content on social media is from influencers or peers who maybe don’t hold the proper education or credentials or merit,” said Tiemeyer.

“The advice may work for that individual in their own lives, but when our teens are utilizing social media and the phone platforms so heavily, they are then going down that potentially harmful path of creating their own diagnosis, creating their own treatment plans. Which in return can decrease the mental health impacts on their lives.”

Fast-paced and oversimplified

Social media platforms such as TikTok, have short-form, fast-paced content that is oversimplified. Many influencers use that platform to post content regarding their personal mental health.

“Kids are lonely. Social media can be so enticing because they’re searching for community, a place to feel understood,” said Tiemeyer.

Youth find validation when they see other people experiencing the same struggles. While that is a benefit, Tiemeyer said, the content does not address the complexity and variation of mental illness and how the same diagnosis can present very differently in two individuals.

“Adolescents and teens see these quick, short-form lists, and they use them as a checklist for their own challenges.”

Examples: Depression and ADHD

Depression can present differently between age groups, genders, life experiences, health factors and severity.

“When you go to the social media platform, it’s just a checklist of what depression is,” said Tiemeyer. “It doesn’t go into the content or details that look very different depending on your individualization of the presentation.”

Another issue Tiemeyer often encounters are youth who feel they have checked all the boxes a social media video presents.

“A big one recently is ADHD,” said Tiemeyer. “They check all the boxes on ADHD, [but] ADHD can present as Generalized Anxiety Disorder. We’ll have teens come to an intake appointment, and they’re against taking the advice of the medical professional because they’ve had an excess of misinformation.”

Awareness and reduced stigma of mental health issues on social media is beneficial, empowering youth to seek care. However, those same youths often do not believe a medical professional if what they say goes against what they saw on social media.

“It has created a barrier within that therapeutic relationship prior to the relationship even starting,” said Tiemeyer. “Our therapists are trying to address the symptomatology of the individual sitting in front of them, but [youth] are coming in with this barrier of: But you need to treat me with what I’ve self-diagnosed myself with, what my favorite influencer on TikTok told me I had, versus what the medical expertise or professional is saying the true diagnosis is and what the treatment needs to be.”

Prevention through validation

How do we help our youth find the most beneficial path? Provide validation, Tiemeyer says.

“We’re all seeking validation,” said Tiemeyer. “That’s not necessarily bad or unhealthy, so providing validation that social media can be good, but then having those crucial conversations regarding the importance of lived experience and individuality, and how mental health can present differently based on different factors.”

Create space for conversation

“We need to create a space for crucial conversations in real life,” said Tiemeyer. “Not hide behind our screens.

“If I have a dialogue back and forth, it’s going to be very different than if I’m having a one-sided conversation by watching a clip.”

We all need to feel believed, capable and safe, Tiemeyer continued. Avoiding invalidation and all-or-nothing thinking – such as telling others not to believe what they see on social media – is vital.

“We need to have this open mind, curiosity to understand, and willingness to learn so we can empower them to feel believed, capable and safe,” said Tiemeyer.

Appropriate oversight

“When we prep our adolescents to drive, there are stages to that,” said Tiemeyer, citing hours of practice, oversight and guidance. “Some may feel that’s way too intense to do [for] social media usage, but it shouldn’t be.

“We should empower the act of using social media because digital content is not going away. Empower it, but then provide them with the skills to utilize it in a safe manner.”

“We know there is an increase in de-stigmatization around mental health treatment,” said Tiemeyer. “However, we also know that the second leading cause of death for children is suicide. There is a time where we need to intervene as the adults in that child’s life and get them the help they need.”

As a mother, Tiemeyer empathizes with parents who don’t want to hinder their relationship with their child by intervening.

“My response to that is: They have to be alive to have that relationship,” said Tiemeyer. “When it comes to the point of hopelessness and suicidality, we’re past the point of worrying about that relationship, and we’re at that point of: Let’s keep my child alive so I can keep growing that relationship.

Spring recycling guide released by Kent County Department of Public Works

The Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW) has released its annual Spring Recycling Guide. The Guide informs residents on what they can dispose of and recycle as they begin spring cleaning.

The Spring Recycling Guide shares valuable tips on recycling and properly disposing of waste, including everything from cartons and cans to bulky plastic containers to chemicals and cleaners and propane tanks. Properly disposing of these household items can help Kent County reach its goal to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Multiple options are available for disposal

“So many items that get placed in residents’ trash bins can be disposed of in a better way, and the DPW’s Spring Recycling Guide offers helpful information to help protect our environment,” said Katelyn Kikstra, Waste Reduction Educator at the DPW.

“We encourage residents to use the guide and our online Recycling & Waste directory to help reduce landfill waste.”

The guide details what can be recycled in Kent County including paper folders and shredded documents, corrugated plastic yard signs, aluminum trays and foil.

If items cannot go in residents’ recycling bins, there are additional options that help avoid items being sent to a landfill. Many household items may not be recyclable but can still be safely disposed of including paints and stains, garden hoses and electronics.

The DPW also offers a newly updated and user-friendly online directory in which residents can search virtually any item and find out how to dispose of or recycle it.

Christy Buck, Executive Director and Founder of be nice., is determined to make mental health a part of our everyday conversation.

Buck’s passion for transforming and saving lives through mental health education has led her through 36+ years of experience in the mental health field and the development of mental health and suicide prevention programs.

“I would challenge people to become more knowledgeable to have the confidence to talk about mental illnesses/mental health disorders,” said Buck to WKTV Journal.

Due to a 20% increase in mental health disorders, people are talking more about mental health than ever before. But Buck says we are still missing a vital piece of the solution.

Greater understanding breeds prevention

“What’s not being talked about is recognizing when somebody is struggling with an illness,” said Buck. “That, to me, is one of the biggest things that we owe the community and the nation right now: a better understanding of recognizing the onset of a mental health disorder.”

Buck continued to say that talking about mental illness/mental health disorders is going to raise a greater understanding of one of the most common illnesses in the world – anxiety disorder.

And when we make it okay to talk about mental illness, we combat stigma.

“One way we can combat stigma is by listening to conversations, [and] correcting people when they might not be knowledgeable about mental illnesses,” said Buck.

Since 2006, Buck and her staff have educated over 300,000 people in West Michigan about mental health awareness, bullying, and suicide prevention. And though Buck says she has seen a large shift over the last few years, there is still more work to do.

“When somebody is struggling with a mental health disorder, it’s very scary for those individuals,” said Buck. “Oftentimes there is self-stigma too…viewing yourself as unworthy, viewing yourself as defeated, that there is no hope.”

Dare to swim upstream

Conquering stigma requires knowledge and willingness to open conversations “upstream.”

“It’s a simple tool,” said Buck. “Oftentimes we complicate mental health.”

The first step to unraveling that obstacle is to notice when something is different than the norm.

“It’s huge to have ownership of what I am seeing and what I am noticing,” said Buck. “Now I have this knowledge, and having a knowledge base is going to build my confidence to take action.

“Confidence is that tool to invite myself into a conversation.”

That conversation should begin with what is good and right about the person you are talking to. It allows that person to know you care and are concerned. Then acknowledge the differences you have noticed.

Then give hope.

“[Hope] comes through language like: you can feel better, you can get better,” said Buck. “Because it’s the truth. It is huge to be able to give that person some hope.”

Also using the word(s) love and I care about you can instill hope in someone.

Protective/Preventative Measures

Ensuring access to services and usage of those services are two main protective factors for those struggling and/or at risk. Another protective factor is friends and family – having people you can talk to.

Eating right, getting sleep and exercising are three things that release chemicals in your brain that help a person feel better. Spiritual wellness can also help, whether in the form of church or meditation that focuses on positive thinking.

“These are all pieces of empowerment,” said Buck. “When somebody is struggling with a mental health disorder or mental illness, they can’t find those protective factors.”

Buck went on to say that inviting someone struggling into a conversation by asking how you can help guides that person toward self-awareness.

Anyone can be N.I.C.E.

“No one is too young to follow the [action] plan, no one is too old to follow the plan,” said Buck. “This can be for kindergarteners through senior citizens. I love it because it is so multi-generational.”


The be nice. program and action plan educates students, staff, and community members about mental illnesses and encourages them to exchange stereotypes for understanding, compassion and acceptance.

And it has been proven to save lives.

Be nice. is to go out and treat people with respect and dignity,” said Buck. “It is having that greater understanding that how we treat each other has an affect on someone’s mental health. On how somebody is thinking, how they’re acting, and how they’re feeling.”

Then, Buck continued, it turns into an action plan to change, improve, and save lives.

Notice the right and good of every individual you come into contact with, and invite yourself to share that good with them. Many times, the person may not have ever heard the good about themselves.

By sharing that with them, you are “bringing about that greater understanding of how worthy they are,” said Buck.

Challenge other people to spread that kindness. Treat people with respect and dignity.

“Ultimately, it feels good,” said Buck. “That’s empowerment.”

Julie Gregory, mother of suicide victim Jessica Gregory, is an advocate for the be nice. program.

“As I have gotten to know some of the wonderful volunteers and people who are involved in this program, I have realized what a difference it could have made in Jessica’s life,” Gregory said on her blog, Picking Up the Pieces. “It could have affected the outcome of my daughter’s life.”

Gregory went on to say that, over the last several years, she has learned that how you treat people impacts the way they think, act, and feel.

“Be the change this world needs today,” said Gregory. “Treat people with love and respect, give them support when they are down, get involved, be positive role models and be nice.”

Knowledge surrounding physical illnesses has increased exponentially over the decades. Buck now challenges us to become more educated about mental illness.

“We are here,” said Jessica Jones, Communications Director for the Mental Health Foundation. “[We’re] ready to help people have those conversations.”

Ignorance results in stigma.

Stigma prevents those who need help from seeking it.

Knowledge and self-awareness stop both ignorance and stigma in their tracks.

“I’ve learned that when people say things about suicide,” Julie Gregory, mother of suicide victim Jessica Gregory, told WKTV Journal, “they’re not saying it to be mean or callous. They’re saying it because they’re ignorant to the facts.”

Christy Buck, Executive Director of the be nice. program, provides an action plan consisting of four simple steps that equip individuals with knowledge to recognize, understand, accept, and take action regarding mental health.

  • N:  notice changes in someone’s thoughts, actions or feelings.
  • I:    invite yourself to speak up if those changes last two weeks or longer.
  • C:  challenge yourself to ask the tough questions, get help, and fight the stigma surrounding mental illness and treatment.
  • E:  empower yourself and others with the knowledge that you can have an effect on how a person thinks, acts and feels.

Self-awareness and grace

For those struggling with mental illness, self-awareness and giving themselves grace are two key components of healing.

“The more self-aware you become, you also know what your limits are,” said Dr. Valencia Agnew of Adolescent and Family Behavioral Services.

Being aware of your thinking gives you more control, said Dr. Brendan Kelly of The Well Being Counseling and Fitness Center. “Control over things you didn’t have [before], like a sense of empowerment over yourself.”

Preparation: It’s like clockwork…I know it’s coming…

In a place of recovery for mental illness, local resident Monica Ruiz said paying close attention to what her body tells her, and how it affects her engagement in activities that keep her regulated and healthy, is key in recognizing when her mental illness is triggered.

Opting out of her regular walks, skipping support group, and not making dinner are all signs that Monica’s mental health is faltering. She then digs into her coping resource toolbox to help manage those negative symptoms.

Signs of mental illness

Signs that someone is struggling with their mental health varies from person to person, but there are several indicators that appear with regularity.

Changes in normal patterns lasting two weeks or more is a key symptom of mental illness. Some (but not all) signs are included below:

  • Changes in eating
  • Changes in sleeping
  • Isolating themselves
  • Not wanting to go to school or places they used to enjoy
  • Increase in crying/appearing sad
  • Changes in schoolwork
  • Violence toward themselves or others
  • Increase in crude or harmful language
  • Increase in anger/temper tantrums
  • Nothing to look forward to, such as events or the future

If you notice these signs in yourself or others, seek help.

If encountering resistance from a parent/adult, Agnew advises those struggling to say: “Even if it is a phase, what harm will it do for me to go and have someone help me? Who couldn’t benefit from support during a [difficult] phase?”

Adapting and Modifying

When experiencing a low point, modifying daily routines can be helpful.

“One of my first lines of defense is to modify my daily activities,” said Monica. “Pausing, being still, and taking that time.”

For a few days, dinner might consist of protein shakes or frozen dinners. Groceries might be ordered and delivered via an online app versus spending hours in a store.

However, Monica added, simplifying activities should only be a short-term solution.

Rachael Braginton, Program Coordinator for be nice., said she has experienced struggles with her own mental health. She can tell her mental health has been negatively triggered when she becomes more irritable, her energy levels dip, and she regularly feels overwhelmed.

Rachael has learned to give herself grace during those times.

“It’s okay to take the evening,” said Rachael. “It’s okay to just sit. It’s okay if you’re just surviving…for a few days.”

Rachael makes a conscious effort to slow down and tell herself it is okay if everything she planned doesn’t get done. But, after taking a moment to relax, Rachael makes a revised plan: What two things am I going to do, so I feel accomplished?

And again…grace.

“You’ve got to continue to give yourself grace in that process,” said Rachael.

First steps: Reaching out

When your mental health is triggered, reaching out to a person you trust is crucial.

“My biggest encouragement would be, find that one person who you are the most comfortable with, that you can say, ‘I’m struggling, and I don’t know what the next step is. Can you help me?’” said Rachael.

Monica agreed that finding a person you trust and who can help you navigate those first steps of the healing process is impactful.

And support is often needed more than advice.

Support vs. Advice

Though it is human nature to want to help a struggling loved one find relief or a solution, a listening ear is often most important.

“Do not fix, control or hand out advice,” said Monica, adding that she personally does not want advice most of the time. “I’m not looking to be fixed.”

Listening, empathizing and letting someone know you support them often helps the most.

“Don’t tell them you know exactly how they feel, because we don’t,” said Dr. Matthew Clark of The Clark Institute. “A lot of times people just want someone to listen, to reflect back to them what they are saying.”

Minimizing or invalidating an individual’s struggle is also damaging.

“Invalidation can be very harmful, and it can immediately fracture that trust and feeling of safety,” said Monica.

Rachael added that causing someone to feel shame about their struggle is also harmful.

“Most people struggling logically know what they are doing is not helpful, or logically know [that] I should be able to do X, Y, and Z. [But] I can’t,” said Rachael. “There is a logical piece to all of us, and we know it’s not right. So quick fixes – those little things – just aren’t helpful.”

Eliminate “Just” statements such as Just breathe, or Just calm down.

“If I could ‘just’ think really hard and change my chemicals, I would,” said Rachael. “But I can’t.”

Madelyn Musser, a local resident with personal mental illness experience, said to stay calm if approached by someone looking for support. Simply ask, What do you need from me? Would you like advice? Or do you just want me to listen?

“That is something so powerful, just those two little options,” said Madelyn, adding that it is important to surround yourself with supportive people. “Build a team.”

Hold space, leave space

“Leave space for silence,” said Rachael. “Allow the other person to fill it. Let them say what they need to say.”

If there is any indication someone is struggling, it is vital to ask how that person is doing and hold space for that conversation. It is also just as important to hold space for the answers you receive.

“Don’t be afraid to have that conversation with someone,” said Agnew. “Nine times out of ten, they’re going to tell you [if they are thinking of suicide].

“You are not going to make someone suicidal by asking. You are not going to plant a seed.”

Clark said that simply checking in with someone is a way to show support.

“Sometimes we feel like no one really cares about what [we are] going through,” said Clark. “Sometimes we think that if they don’t ask, they don’t care.”

“I do believe that all suffering is temporary,” said Monica. “I do believe that, as humans, we are capable of healing ourselves, and we know what we need.

“Life experiences can get in the way of that and make us feel hopeless, that we will never get better and there is no help. But I do believe that is not true.”

“When we sit here and say there is hope, it’s because we’ve seen it, we’ve lived it,” said Rachael.

When hope is not easy to see, Rachael urges those struggling to take it one step at a time.

“It’s not always easy, but there really is hope out there,” said Rachael.

Monica said that even in the lowest times, there will be moments of reprieve. “So please hold on. There is help. It gets better.”

Recognize your worth

“I remember the first time someone told me that I was worthy just because I existed,” said Monica. “It brought me to tears immediately.”

She continued, “It’s something I say to others. I do believe everyone really does belong here.”

Changing things up

“You change the narrative by doing something,” said Agnew. “Go talk to someone. It changes the narrative just by taking that step.”

Knowledge of mental illness signs and risk factors – and how to approach them – creates the base. Confidence generated by that knowledge is the middle. At the top of the pyramid is action: the steps taken to address the concern.

“Knowledge breeds confidence,” said Buck in her book (pg. 144). “Confidence breeds action.”

Increasing personal knowledge, having a support system and building resiliency are all steps to rewriting your story, or the story of a loved one.

“Any of those things can change the narrative,” said Agnew. “Literally change the narrative.

“It’s not always easy to do, but it is possible to do, and it is well worth the investment. You get to go from existing, to living.”

Suicide survivors and clinicians challenge stigma surrounding mental illness

Madelyn Musser was 15 years old when she attempted suicide. Rachael Braginton attempted to end her life as a freshman in college.

It was several years before Monica Ruiz realized her depressive episodes and struggles with suicide were a result of complex trauma from her childhood and the resulting PTSD.

These three local women sat down with WKTV Journal to share their mental health journeys in the hopes of eradicating stigma surrounding mental illness.

Managing their mental health journey is a daily endeavor for millions of people worldwide. It is one undertaken and shared by these three local women. Joined by local clinicians and the Mental Health Foundation, they strive to rewrite the narrative surrounding their struggles.

Stigma: Victims of our own conditioning

You are going through: hormone changes, emotions, being ‘that age.’

But you have: a loving family, material possessions, a roof over your head.

All of the above are a fraction of what Madelyn and Monica heard from doctors and family members over the years as they struggled to understand a persistent sense of hopelessness.

“I don’t think my family are bad people,” said Monica. “I think they’re just a product of the culture in which we live, and these harmful beliefs or narratives that have been passed on from generation to generation.”

“I had to break out,” said Madelyn. “I did have a suicide attempt when I was 15, and I think that kind of set in everybody’s mind that she does need help.”

Rachael believes stigma resided inside her, ultimately stopping her from seeking help. Even with a caring and supportive family, good grades in school, great friends and good health, one question kept circling her mind: “Why would I be feeling this way?”

“I remember wishing I could be [physically] sick to make it make sense to myself,” said Rachael.

Because she couldn’t make sense of her feelings, Rachael feared judgment from others. Afraid people would think she was lazy, or couldn’t handle a certain stage in life, she repeatedly implied that she was doing well.

“It spiraled into a hole of lies,” said Rachael. “There’s support there, but I’ve been lying to my support. So now what do I do?”

Feeling she had cut herself off from all avenues of help, Rachael attempted to take her own life.

Perpetuating Silence

While Rachael struggled with crippling silence, Monica chose to be vocal about her inner battles – and was met with painful responses.

“I don’t believe you.”

“This can’t happen…You can’t not show up.”

The comments above, made by Monica’s graduate professor and co-worker, hurt Monica deeply.

“When those things happen, it really fractures trust, and really damages the relationship to the point where I feel this person is no longer safe to be honest [with],” said Monica.

“And that perpetuates the living in silence a lot of us experience.”

Therapist and owner of The Well Being Counseling and Fitness Center, Dr. Brendan Kelly, also believes that fear of judgment is a root cause preventing people from seeking help.

“People are afraid of being judged,” said Kelly, adding that people are even afraid of what their therapist might think of them.

Dr. Matthew Clark of The Clark Institute agrees: “They see it as a weakness, or something they don’t want to admit to somebody because they might feel ashamed.

“Almost everybody at one time or another has struggled with anxiety or depression, and there’s help out there. And if you get help for yourself, then you can help other people, too.”

Treatment – Understanding the journey of healing

Treatment is a journey that takes work and is an imperfect process.

“Not everybody understands that everybody is different in their treatment,” said Madelyn, admitting that it took years to realize medication did not work for her.

Clark agreed, saying there is not one set therapy or treatment.

Regarding medication, Clark said, “You can try until you find a medication that works for you. And [you] may not need it forever. It might just be a short period of time to get you through this period.”

Length of time until treatment begins working also varies.

“It can take a while,” said Kelly. “We are the world’s most complex organism known to mankind. We’re all different.”

Finding a therapist you feel comfortable with can also be a challenge. Many clinics have bios and pictures of available therapists to help that process.

Affordability of treatment

“One of the worst things is that, a lot of times, financial stress is a part of why a person is struggling,” said Kelly. “I really wish insurance would just remove the deductible for mental health.”

Checking with your insurance provider is a good place to start. Those enrolled in Medicaid do not have a copay for mental health services. There also are foundations who provide financial help to those who need it.

Agnew’s staff includes Masters-level interns that clients can see at a much lower rate.

“It was really important to me that our services be available for people who can’t afford it,” said Agnew.

Closing the gap, filling your toolbox

While medication can help close the gap between a low point and the stability sought, having a toolbox of coping skills is also important.

“I like to say I have a toolbox with resources,” said Monica.

Movement (e.g., walking) and mindful practices such as meditation and yoga are tools Monica engages in on a regular basis. However, community is an important resource for her as well.

“At my lowest, I tend to isolate, and I don’t really want to be around anybody,” said Monica. “But I know the people [in] my circle that I trust, and that I can call in those moments, that I feel safe around.

“Getting that contact – that social contact – has been really helpful for my mental health.”

Support groups are a great way to find that human connection.

“I can’t explain how helpful it is to be in a group who all struggle with complex trauma and mental health issues, and I know they all understand,” said Monica.

Though Rachael put off participating in group therapy at first, she quickly found solace in the rapport she found there.

“We all get it,” said Rachael. “There are people who can relate, and that can be uplifting.”

A life-changing impact

At approximately 3 a.m. on March 10, 2015, 28-year-old Jessica Diane Gregory silently ended the internal pain she fought to free herself from most of her life.

Jessica’s mother, Wyoming resident Julie Gregory, prefers to focus on Jessica and her struggles versus the act of suicide when talking about her daughter’s death.

“I lost my daughter to depression, bullying and bipolar disorder,” said Gregory when talking with WKTV Journal.

Mental illness does not discriminate

Jessica had a family who loved her, was in the top 20 in her high school class of 2004, participated in sideline cheer and the competitive cheer team, ran track and had amazing friends.

Despite all of these things, Jessica was hounded by a darkness that led to physically harming herself and a suicide attempt in high school. Jessica’s internal struggle eventually spiraled into a loss of all hope.

Excerpts from Jessica’s journal and various other writings reveal the internal pain she battled daily:

Several pages of Jessica’s journal contained detailed plans of how she could end her life.

“I’m not ashamed or scared to talk about suicide or how my daughter ended her pain,” said Gregory. “We need to end the stigma surrounding suicide and mental illness. Redefine the way people talk about suicide and the way we think about suicide, and look at it as an effect of an illness.

“Why is it that the brain is the only organ in your body that will get judged for being ill?”

Gregory went on to say that those who die by suicide have lost a battle with a disease.

“They couldn’t hold on any longer,” said Gregory. “I feel it’s our job to help them hold on. Mental illness is treatable.”

I’m sorry, Mom. I love you.’

The last time Gregory saw her daughter alive was like a hundred others. There was nothing to indicate Jessica planned to end her life that night.

After having dinner with her family, Jessica and Gregory finished a jigsaw puzzle and began another.

Gregory had no idea Jessica purchased a handgun nine hours earlier.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., Jessica helped her mother put the puzzle table away and went home to her apartment.

After writing one last letter to her mother in pink marker – her favorite color – Jessica silently ended the pain she battled daily.

Before you ask…educate yourself

Gregory said one of the hardest questions people ask her is: “How did she do it?” Gregory’s palms turned toward the ceiling, shrugging in disbelief and saying, “Does it matter?”

What matters to Gregory is that her daughter is gone forever.

Another question Greogry repeatedly faces is, “Why didn’t you get her help?”

“We did get her help,” Gregory said vehemently. “She did go to the doctor, she was on meds, she went to therapy. She had a psychiatrist, she had a counselor, she had all these people. She had a team of people.

“You can put a mask on and show people what you want them to see,” Gregory continued. “It’s not always easy to see.”

“Even when parents, and people in general, have noticed a lot of signs, it is also possible to miss signs,” said Agnew.

When Gregory went back and looked at specific dates in Jessica’s journal, she was stunned at how well Jessica hid her true emotions.

After one particular journal entry that conveyed Jessica’s wish to die, Gregory looked back at Facebook pictures, realizing it was the same day the family attended a birthday party. All pictures from that day portrayed Jessica as happy.

Gregory thought to herself, “She was happy. That was the mask she wore. And she was thinking all day about how she could die?”

Selfishness vs. Mentally Ill

Gregory shares her daughter’s struggle because she wants others to understand that the thought process of a mentally ill person is not normal.

“I am simply showing people how the mind of my mentally ill daughter was thinking,” said Gregory. “She wasn’t looking to hurt anyone. She was ending her pain and what she thought was a life that couldn’t get better.”

Suicide is not selfish, Greogry continued. “Suicide is a desperate way to end pain, physical or mental. It is a hopelessness that things will never get better. It is a feeling that family or friends will be better off without them.

“Those who are suffering don’t want to end their lives, they want to end their pain.”

Gregory also hopes to end usage of the term “committed suicide.”

“In 1964, it was a law that it was illegal to commit suicide – but they didn’t know anything about it,” said Gregory. “Now that we know more, we can talk more about it and we don’t have to use those ‘committed’ words.”

“We say ‘died by suicide,’” Gregory continued. “Instead of focusing on the act, we focus on the person and what was going on.”

Picking up the Pieces

Gregory and her family faced a lot of “firsts” as they learned to maneuver life without Jessica. Gregory credits their faith in God and having each other to lean on as the key to their survival.

The grieving mother’s main focus after losing Jessica was making sure her son, younger than Jes by 14 years, was okay. That everyone around her was okay.

And that included other people who found themselves enduring the loss of a loved one.

“I had hundreds of people send me messages,” said Gregory, adding that she welcomes those messages. “People can come to me.”

Gregory is a vocal advocate for the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan’s be nice. program. She encourages schools and organizations to take part in the program, take action, and save lives.

However, for Gregory, personal comfort and healing comes in the form of helping those enduring the aftermath of loss. She does this through the i understand love heals program.

“For me, helping people pick themselves up after – it just hit home.”

Grieving and healing

“I didn’t have time to grieve, and I still won’t take that time to feel sorry [for myself], because I need to be 100% to help all these other people,” said Gregory.

While Gregory admits that is not the healthiest approach, she has no plans to stop being that voice for Jessica and a source of hope for those grieving.

“Just to know that I’ve helped others is healing to me, and so I don’t know any other way to grieve,” Gregory said. “I grieve sitting at that big table and having new people come to the group that literally just lost their family member two weeks ago.

“And I feel their pain, and I will grieve for that family and those lost, and for Jessica.”

A voice for Jessica

Gregory proclaims herself to be an open book, refusing to hide that her daughter ended her own life.

Instead, two years after Jessica’s death, Gregory chose to open both her own life and Jessica’s to scrutiny and possible ridicule in the hopes that even one person would see – and choose – hope.

Picking Up the Pieces is a blog that unveils Jessica’s journey, her internal pain, bullying she experienced at her job, and the aftermath Gregory endures daily since finding Jessica in her apartment nine years ago.

Gregory does not hold back, laying bare the pain and darkness – and emphasizing the glimmer of hope she knows is always present, even if not always noticed.

Though Gregory has been pushed out of her comfort zone countless times over the last several years, she embraces each challenge so she can share Jessica’s story and be that voice for her daughter.

“If I reach just one person, letting them know they aren’t alone, it is worth sharing,” said Gregory. “Or, maybe someone reading these pages who doesn’t have a mental illness will be enlightened by what is in someone’s mind that does.”

#ThereIsAlwaysHope

Jessica applied for a new job before she took her life. A job at a hospital where she could help others and could carry out her personal life mission. Multiple interviews and a job shadow followed.

The darkness Jessica fought against, however, overwhelmed her before she heard their decision.

“The day after Jessica’s suicide, there was a message left on her cell phone voicemail,” said Gregory. “It was a message from the hospital she had applied at.

“She received that call one day late…”

The timing of that voicemail is something Gregory encourages all who struggle to contemplate.

“There is always hope,” said Gregory. “No matter how bad today can be, things will get better. You can’t leave today, because tomorrow everything could change.

“Life is all hills and valleys, and for every valley that you’re in, those hills are going to be amazing.”

Monica Ruiz, in a personal place of mental health recovery for the past few years, echoes that message.

“I do believe that all suffering is temporary,” said Ruiz, adding that there will be moments of relief even in the lowest times. “So please hold on. There is help. It gets better.”

A radical resolve

Gregory’s resolve to eradicate stigma and live with hope is evident in each word of Picking Up the Pieces.

“I am determined to be more than just a survivor,” said Gregory on her blog. “I am determined to find the silver lining, I am determined to see my glass as half full, I am determined to keep talking about mental illness and the side effects that ‘Pain’ can cause some people.

“I am determined to help change the definition of suicide.”

Eradicating stigma 

“The stigma needs to be lifted about mental struggles,” said Gregory. “We need to talk about it, out in the open, and not treat it like a dirty secret – those days are past. We need to continue this conversation.”

Chef Syndy Sweeney to share delicious baking tips at Wyoming KDL event March 26

Chef Sweeney finds meaning in cooking (Courtesy, Sweeney)

Chef Syndy Sweeney of T. Rex & the Rabbit Foods will be at the Wyoming branch of Kent District Library (KDL) on Tuesday, March 26 to share her love of food and cooking with local residents.

For Sweeney, cooking is about more than just food. It’s about connection and comfort.

“For me, food has always been love,” said Sweeney. “My mom started teaching me when I was about four, and food was always something that I did for comfort and for connection.”

Combining books and cherries

At the Baking with Michigan Cherries KDL event, Sweeney will share the many ways to create delicious baked goods using Michigan’s seasonal cherry bounty.

The event is being held in conjunction with KDL’s On the Same Page community-wide reading initiative featuring the novel Tom Lake by best-selling novelist Ann Patchett. Patchett’s novel is centered around Michigan’s Traverse City cherry orchards.

“I read the book and have developed a lecture where we’re going to cover basic baking tips with regular flour and gluten-free flour, and incorporate as many different cherry products as possible,” said Sweeney.

Attendees will learn common-sense tips to successful baking, as well as favorite components, ingredients and baking equipment/utensils.

Sweeney encourages participation and questions during her demonstrations.

“I want people to feel engaged,” said Sweeney. “I want people to feel comfortable touching the dough and smelling the ingredients that I am using in my demonstration.”

Dinosaurs and rabbits

As a personal chef, Sweeney offers catering services for small events, meal prep, and several options for cooking classes through various community programs.

“Where you need a chef, I go,” Sweeney said. “I don’t have a restaurant, and I don’t have a storefront. But I have a lot of equipment, and a car and a cart. And muscles,” Sweeney added with a laugh.

Though Sweeney has been a vegetarian for over thirty years, her parents and her husband eat meat.

“I was always making substitutions,” said Sweeney. “I would make two versions of the same thing but with different proteins.”

T. Rex & the Rabbit Foods is a fitting name for Sweeney’s business due to the chef’s refusal to restrict herself to one practice of cooking. Whether vegetarian, a meat lover, vegan, kosher, gluten-free, halal, or dealing with food allergies, Sweeney is onboard.

“I don’t like when food is politicized,” said Sweeney. “I cook for everybody.”

Though Sweeney loved cooking, she doubted she would be able to make a living as a personal chef. However, Sweeney has been amazed at how her desire to help people connect through food has expanded into the successful business it is today.

“It’s been a lot of work, a lot of talking to people, testing recipes, and just word of mouth and hustling,” said Sweeney. “It’s a lot of fun, and it’s been very challenging and humbling at times.”

Sweeney enjoys the teaching aspect of her job, using her skills to highlight the ways food connects people rather than dividing them. That sense of community is something she strives for in each of her lectures and classes.

Davenport University launches groundbreaking bilingual degrees program

Leaders at Davenport University (DU) announced a groundbreaking initiative that leads to bilingual degrees with professional proficiency in English and Spanish.

Casa Latina at Davenport has a unique approach by offering courses with one week fully in Spanish and the next week fully in English. Graduates of this program at Davenport will enhance the pool of bilingual talent for businesses, while offering a solid path to careers in business, technology, healthcare, urban education and the sciences.

Casa Latina, the only program of its kind in the nation, represents a new era in higher education.

Twelve undergraduate and graduate degrees are tailored to students who will not only become experts in their fields, but will join the workforce ready to lead in a bilingual world. Degree programs include accounting, business administration, education, human resource management, health services administration and technology project management.

Worldwide flexibility

Students can apply now for courses beginning fall 2024.

The Casa Latina program is fully online, giving students the flexibility they need to begin and finish their degrees. The program will be available worldwide, and Davenport will consider work experience and education credits, reducing the time it takes to earn a degree.

Scholarships are available for full-time students: $9,200 for undergraduates and $5,000 for graduate students. Students attending part-time will be awarded a prorated amount.

Innovative and bold

DU saw the need for this bilingual program after studying the needs of employers across the country.

Carlos Sanchez, the executive director of Casa Latina, believes the uniqueness of this program will appeal to the Latino community by offering key bachelor and master degrees along with wrap-around support for students. DU’s Casa Latina program offers bilingual and bicultural student support in admissions, financial aid, counseling, tutoring and library services.

“Davenport is taking an innovative, bold approach with Casa Latina,” Sanchez said. “We are creating this bilingual program that will provide an opportunity for Latino students to overcome so many challenges. We are taking barriers down related to language, finances and geography.

“We have virtual bilingual tutoring, and we have staff dedicated to advising our Casa Latina students. We are creating a community at Davenport that will embrace and guide students as they pursue their degrees.”

Supporting the underserved

The energy for Casa Latina comes right from the top. President Richard J. Pappas and Executive Vice President of Academics and Provost Gilda Gely know Casa Latina will serve students and employers, while aligning with Davenport’s commitment to reach underserved populations in higher education.

Despite being the fastest growing population in the country, Latinos are the least represented in higher education. In the U.S., only 18% of adults over the age of 25 who identify as Hispanic or Latino have a bachelor’s degree or higher. That’s compared to 37% of white/non-Hispanics. Pappas said Davenport is focused on closing this gap.

“We have taken direction from people within the Latino community to understand the needs and challenges they have to continue their education,” Pappas said. “We are absolutely committed to creating an environment with all the tools necessary for bilingual students to graduate ready to work and lead in bilingual environments.”

Gely has been instrumental in the development of Casa Latina and believes it is the right program to give bilingual speakers the opportunity to become confident in their ability to succeed in college and in the workplace.

“At Davenport, we have taken the position that Latino students do not have to fit into our mold, but rather we will meet them where they are and support them as they realize their potential,” Gely said. “We have been working toward launching this bilingual program with their success at the forefront of its development. This is truly an exciting moment and opportunity.”

Scam ads prey on patients seeking mental health treatment through local Pine Rest organization

People searching online for Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services on their mobile devices are encountering fraudulent third-party organizations instead of the Pine Rest organization.

“Third-party organizations, using carefully crafted language to present themselves as affiliates of Pine Rest, appear near the top of search results and fraudulently claim they can assist individuals with placement in our services,” states a recent Pine Rest press release.

Attorney General Dana Nessel also issued a warning statement that the phone number found online may not actually connect them to Pine Rest.

“This appears to be a cruel scheme targeting those suffering from substance abuse disorder, striking treatment-seeking victims in a moment of courage, when they’ve finally sought professional help,” said Nessel.

Preying on the vulnerable

Pine Rest is a mental health care service provider for West Michigan. Located on the south side of Grand Rapids, Pine Rest is known for their variety of mental health services.

Susan Langeland, Vice President of Continuum Development and Chief Information Officer for Pine Rest, said the fraudulent ads are taking advantage of very vulnerable people in a moment of crisis.

“When people think about seeking care, they mull it over, it takes them many times to actually pick up that phone to call for treatment,” said Langeland. “So when they do, we want to make sure that we get them connected to the right treatment, not being sent out of state and potentially delaying care this person desperately needs.”

Legitimacy of ads

The fraudulent ads use carefully crafted words to appear like a legitimate health care organization. When someone searching for care calls the number provided, scammers identify themselves as a Pine Rest clinician or hospital admissions for an affiliate organization.

“None of that is true,” said Langeland. “We have our own admissions department right there at Pine Rest campus on the south side of Grand Rapids. They are all employed by Pine Rest. We don’t use brokerage or placement firms.”

Many patients have been diverted out of state for potential treatment. While the locations given are actual treatment facilities, that does not mean patients are receiving the care they need.

“What we hear back from some of these patients is that they are actual locations,” said Langeland. “But as to what their treatment is, and what that looks like, and how that quality of care is, I can’t speak to any of that. We don’t know anybody at any of the locations that our patients have brought back to us.”

Fraudulent scam impact

Langeland went on to say that Pine Rest has no way of knowing how many people have been impacted by these scams.

“We’re reliant on people to let us know,” Langeland said. “Some people reach out right away and say, ‘That was really weird interaction with you,’ and file a formal complaint. Others just go about their day-to-day, and we don’t know.”

The authorities and Attorney General are working with Pine Rest to gather information regarding the scam ads. However, some patients who issued complaints do not want to be part of the investigation due to fear of judgment.

“Unfortunately, we still have stigma,” said Langeland, adding that it is hard for some people to trust that the system is going to take care of the issue, and that there is no stigma attached.

The patients who have agreed to participate in the investigation do so because they don’t want anyone else to fall victim to the scams.

“Their experience was not one that they enjoyed, and they don’t want this to happen to anyone else in a moment when they are trying to seek help,” said Langeland.

How to avoid scam ads

When people seek substance use care in a moment of crisis, Langeland said, they are using their phones quickly, getting online and searching Pine Rest. “And these sponsored ads would come up that look like Pine Rest.”

In a moment of crisis, that person does not look for details on a sponsored ad to ensure it is legitimate. They simply click on the link that looks like it will lead them to the resources they need.

Pine Rest stresses the importance of going to an organization’s website, making sure you talk to someone from the organization, and being conscious of what information you are giving out over the phone so you are not taken advantage of.

Pine Rest is working with their legal team and law enforcement to figure out options regarding the scams.

Though Pine Rest has no control over sponsored ads, Langeland hopes authorities will find a way to restrict the scammers from claiming to be Pine Rest or affiliated with Pine Rest.

“When people say we don’t have any availability, that is not actually the case,” said Langeland.

Van Dam joined GVSU’s leadership team in 2021 to lead a university effort to develop new ways to help the 2.5 million Michigan adults without a post-secondary credential improve their career path and earning potential by completing, or continuing, their education.

“Michigan faces a daunting challenge,” said Van Dam. “Nearly 50 percent of its adult population lack a postsecondary credential despite unambiguous evidence that continued educational achievement is the surest path out of poverty toward sustained economic security.

“Our regional network of campuses across the state and online educational offerings mean that, no matter where people are in their careers and education, GVSU Omni meets students where they are and guides their next step for advancement.”
