As we continue to closely monitor the national and local weather services, we are making preparations to ensure that the safety of our employees and customers remains our top priority.


With the anticipated snowfall and windy conditions, please be mindful of the changing weather and road conditions when planning your trip with us. Inclement weather can cause service delays, but our team is working hard to get you to your destination in a safe and timely manner.

With safety as our top priority, we must work together to support each other through challenging weather. Here are some ways you can help:

  1. Carry a visible light at your bus stop: Whether it’s day or night, having a light to wave as the bus approaches through the snow will aid visibility and ensure a smoother boarding process.
  2. Wear headphones on board: To assist our drivers in maintaining focus on safe driving, please use headphones to minimize distractions while on the bus.
  3. Have your fare payment ready: Given potential delays in arrival times due to inclement weather, having your fare payment ready will help expedite boarding and prevent additional delays.

The Rapid seeks community input on public general transportation needs

The Rapid is asking for community input on the future of transit as part of its Transit Master Plan (TMP).

Titled “Thriving: A framework for the future of connectivity,” the TMP seeks to identify what the public needs from The Rapid and general transportation in both the short and long term.

Individuals can participate through an online survey or by attending an in-person community engagement workshop from now until Dec. 8. This feedback will help The Rapid strategically build a community-led transit system for the next 20 years.

The survey, along with additional information, can be found at www.transitthriving.org.

Everyone in the region is encouraged to participate, regardless of whether they use public transportation or not. The study area for this project extends well beyond The Rapid’s service zone with the intent to garner feedback from individuals who currently don’t have access to The Rapid.

“As our region grows, so does the need to expand transit options,” said The Rapid CEO Deb Prato. “We need to create a plan that outlines how public transportation will meet the needs of all our residents. Gathering feedback from everyone, both users and nonusers, is crucial to the success of this plan.”

There will be an in-person open house event Thursday, Oct. 19 at Rapid Central Station, 250 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW, Grand Rapids. There will be three sessions: 7 to 9 a.m., 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m.

Once the public engagement period ends on Dec. 8, The Rapid and TMP project consultants from internationally recognized firm AECOM will develop the roadmap for implementing, improving and potentially expanding transit options in the future.

Walk, bike, or share rides during Active Commute Week

Active Commute Week is underway in the Grand Rapids area with commuters having the opportunity to set up an account to log all “green” trips for a chance to win prizes.

Running through Thursday, June 15, Active Commute Week is hosted by The Rapid’s West Michigan Rideshare in partnership with the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum. The week-long event aims to promote positive changes in individual commuting habits within the community. Through friendly competition, participants are encouraged to embrace greener methods of transportation, such as taking the bus, walking, running and cycling to improve the environment and support a healthy lifestyle.

Commuters may set up an account with the option to join a team or register as an individual to log all “green” trips throughout the week for a chance to win prizes. These trips can be anything from biking to work, riding the bus to the grocery store, or carpooling to lunch. From the account portal, commuters will be able to monitor their reduction in carbon footprint to watch their real-time environmental impact.

The Rapid will host a variety of events from food trucks to free bike repairs with it all culminating in a community celebration set for Friday, June 16 from 4 – 4 p.m. The community celebration will be on the second floor of the Rapid Central Station and include a reward ceremony for the top commuters. There also will be a chance to win raffle prizes, enjoy beer from Brewery Vivant, pizza from Peppino’s, mingle with the active commuters, and enjoy artwork from students around the community.

All activities will be held around the Rapid Central station, 250 Ceasar E. Chavez Ave. SW.

The Rapid moves to being greener while expanding its route

The Rapid is moving to become more green with renewable natural gas (RNG) while expanding its routes to aid in employment opportunities.

In April, The Rapid announced it has begun receiving EPA-certified renewable natural gas from the City of Grand Rapids’ biodigester, which is a major milestone in a multi-year effort to create a partnership that upholds a shared commitment to sustainability.

“The partnership speaks to innovative ways that local governments can work with regional partners and support their sustainability goals while also reinforcing the City’s commitment to building a safe and healthy community,” said James Hurt, Grand Rapids’ managing director of Public Services.

The Rapid has been working to transition its bus fleet away from diesel fuel to lower-emission potions since 2017, and the new partnership will create a renewable fuel source captures methane from the decomposition process, converting it into usable vehicle fuel and redirecting the waste away from local landfills.

 

“We’re fueling a cleaner fleet and significantly reducing our carbon footprint,” said Deb Prato, CEO of The Rapid. “This innovative partnership represents the creativity and collaboration that is necessary to develop strategies across multiple sectors to create better outcomes for the climate and the community.”

RNG fuel is considered carbon-negative, producing the lowest carbon intensity of any on-road vehicle fuel. The Rapid will be able to utilize this fuel immediately in the fleet without the need for massive infrastructure changes or investments.

The Rapid’s fleet currently consists of 133 buses, 102 of which will have the capacity to run fully on RNG. Diesel buses will continue to be retired and replaced by RNG vehicles, in a continued effort to reach zero emissions by 2023.

Starting this week, The Rapid announced its Route 8 Prairie/Rivertown will now have two weekday trips serving Michigan Turkey Producers.

 

“Our diverse workforce represents a large community of people in West Michigan with a wide range of transportation needs,” said MaryAnne McCaffrey, Vice President of Human Resources at Michigan Turkey Producers. “A stop at our location will ensure a safe and reliable commute for our employees.”

 

Route 8 will have two weekday trips, the first trip departing from Rapid Central Station at 6:45 a.m. and the second trip departing from Michigan Turkey at 4:58 p.m. The 6:45 a.m. trip will follow its regular route to Rivertown, continuing to Michigan Turkey Producers on Chicago Drive. The 4:58 p.m. trip will take a left on Burlingame and travel directly to Michigan Turkey Producers, before returning to Godfrey and then to Rapid Central Station. All previous stops along Route 8 will continue to be served.

The Rapid makes improvements to Silverline

The Rapid is reintroducing the Silver Line to new and returning customers with on-board fare payments to prepare for contactless payments coming in 2023. The change improves customer experience, avoids expensive equipment replacements, and aligns with how people pay fares on other buses in the system.

As the original ticket vending machines reach their end of life, The Rapid is preparing for convenient payment options onboard the Silver Line buses rather than replacing the expensive equipment. Transactions for fare will look just like the rest of The Rapid’s routes other than the Laker Line. These changes include installing Wave card readers and cash fareboxes onboard. These changes will prepare The Rapid for the contactless fare payment options, including Apple Pay and Google Pay coming in Spring 2023.

“We’re continually reviewing our system and our performance and taking the steps we need to, focusing on how The Rapid can improve mobility and access for all,” said Deb Prato, chief executive officer for The Rapid. “We look at how can we make it easier for our customers to get from point A to point B, how to choose the best route or combination of transportation options, and how to pay for their fares in the most convenient way possible.”

The Rapid launched the Silver Line, Michigan’s first Bus Rapid Transit service in 2014. The Silver Line provided an express route for customers in the Division Avenue corridor and was equipped with the best technology available at the time.

The Silver Line blurs the lines between buses and trains by offering customers more amenities than a typical bus service. Customers have access to the park and ride options and convenient fare vending. The Silver Line stations offer sheltered, accessible platform boarding and real-time arrival information. Traffic signal prioritization, hybrid diesel-electric buses, and high-frequency service are also features of this bus rapid transit service.

Customers will use the same payment methods on Silver Line buses as the rest of the fixed-route bus system. Adult customers pay $1.75 per ride with exact cash or can receive the best value by purchasing a $47 monthly Wave card, The Rapid’s smart transit pass, that launched in 2018 to make fare payments easier. With the Wave card, receive the highest value for the amount with fare-capping and free transfers within one hour and 45 minutes. Specialty Wave cards, like youth and reduced fare, require picture identification and can be purchased at The Rapid’s Information Center within Central Station. Adult Wave cards can be purchased online at wave.ridetherapid.org.  

The Rapid joins with Spectrum, Meijer to host job fair

This “Roll With Us” fair will run from 4 – 8 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 5 on The Rapids’ Central Station and will help job seekers explore working for The Rapid and job opportunities at partner locations along bus routes. The fair will include West Michigan’s two largest employers, Spectrum Health and Meijer, as well as opportunities with Mary Free Bed, Kellogg’s, Gerald R. Ford Job Corps, and Hope Network.

 

“We are so excited to partner for this job fair,” said Micalah Webster, talent selection manager with Spectrum Health. “It’s a great opportunity to connect with the community, share information with job seekers, and highlight many of the positions we have available, from patient-facing roles delivering care to roles behind the scenes that help keep our business running. Many of the positions we are hiring for are in locations served by The Rapid.”

Hosting the fair at Rapid Central Station makes attendance more accessible to people without personal vehicles. Attendees can take Routes 1 through 15 and the Silverline directly to the job fair. For job seekers traveling by car, free parking will be available in the lot in front of Rapid Central Station at 250 Cesar E. Chavez with the entrance on Williams Street.

The Rapid will be offering on-site interviews and making offers for bus operators and vehicle technicians at the “Roll With Us” job fair. The transit agency offers paid training, great benefits, and the opportunity to work with a group of people who take pleasure and pride in making an important difference in the lives of others.

Spectrum Health also has many opportunities available for job seekers. “We offer a wide variety of opportunities, including entry-level positions with on-the-job training,” Webster said. These positions offer a great way to get started in healthcare, even if an applicant does not have experience, and can lead to long-term careers.”

The job fair will feature Mexcellente, a local food truck, to give participants a chance to purchase food while exploring career options.

Although The Rapid has hosted job fairs in the past, this is its first venture inviting partners to participate. Employers choose to invest in this community because it provides transportation options for its employees. Public transit serves as an economic engine and partnerships are fundamental to the success of transit and growing a more sustainable community.

“The Rapid provides more than just transportation – we create opportunities and connections within our community,” The Rapid CEO Deb Prato said. “We’re excited to welcome our partners to the Roll With Us job fair to connect transit riders with transit-friendly employers. I’m also excited to meet the people who choose to join our team as operators and technicians. The people in these roles are the backbone of our organization and community.”

Pine Rest, Spectrum South to be added to bus route

With Byron Township’s decision to not renew its contact with The Rapid, the transportation agency took the opportunity to realign its south Clyde Park Avenue route (Route 10) to serve some of the area’s critical destinations.

Starting Aug. 29, the route will include new stops at the Special Olympics and Disability Advocates of Kent County facility on 68th Street, Cutlerville’s Pine Rest location, and the Spectrum Health South Pavilion.

“We are proud to work with The Rapid to create a new bus stop and turnaround on Pine Rest’s Cutlerville campus,” said Pine Rest President Mark Eastburg. “Access to transportation is essential for our community and this service will greatly benefit our friends and neighbors who are seeking care at Pine Rest, as well as our employees who can now choose public transpiration as an option. Providing more access to our campus gives more opportunity to receive mental health and emergency care at Pine Rest’s psychiatric urgent care center.”

At its June board meeting, Byron Township did not vote in favor of renewing its contract with The Rapid, which previously funded a portion of Route 10 south of 54th Street. This provided an opportunity to evaluate and change route patterns to serve critical destinations.

Beginning on Aug. 29, Route 10 will have stops at:

  • Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) campus and Disability Advocates of Kent County
  • Pine Rest
  • Spectrum Health South Pavilion

The reroute impacts some of the existing stops along Route 10. Several stops along Division Avenue and 68th Street will be eliminated. The stops along 54th street will remain to serve Route 1 – Division but will no longer be used as stops for Route 10. Northbound stops along Clyde Park will remain in service south of 54th Street.The Rapid also operates the Go!Bus paratransit services that provide rides to ADA-eligible customers within its service area. With transit agencies being required to provide services within three-fourth of a mile of their fixed-transit routes, the areas served by Go!Bus will shift around the new route configuration.

“It’s great working with the Rapid staff to provide a workable solution for the new Special Olympics campus,” said Disability Advocates of Kent County Executive Director Dave Bulkowski. “The new routing will provide a mainline bus stop in front of our facilities on 68th Street. This makes it safer for transit customers by eliminating the need to cross five lanes of traffic to access Disability Advocates and the Special Olympics campus. With these stops, we also maintain Go!Bus paratransit service which is absolutely critical for our staff, volunteers, and participants.”

The updates to Route 10 will ultimately help drive The Rapid’s efforts in cultivating a more equitable community in all six-plus cities by providing access to these essential services.

“This realignment will provide safer access to the Special Olympics of Michigan campus and co- located services provided by Disability Advocates of Kent County. It will also allow for greater access to employment opportunities for our six-cities residents,” said Deb Prato, CEO of The Rapid. “We work hard to build partnerships and innovative services to meet the needs of the community we serve.”

Wyoming and Kentwood residents utilizing The Rapid for transportation will be able to ride for free Monday, Aug. 30, and Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The reason for the free rides is to get users acclimated to the new Rapid schedules which go into effect on Aug. 30. The schedules and service changes were recommend by the Mobility for All project, a two-year analysis and pubic outreach process that looked at ways to improve The Rapid transit system. Wave card users will still be asked to tap their cards to track ridership but no funds will be charged from their cards. 

“The service plan that will be implemented on Monday is the result of exhaustive study and public feedback, and we’re confident that the changes being made will provide better service overall to the residents of the entire six-city area,” said Max Dillivan, Senior Planner and project Manager for Mobility for All. “We’re excited to be offering two days of free rides to help customers transition to new schedules and adjusted routes.”

The service enhancements are focused on buses running more frequently on The Rapid’s busiest routes, improving the on-time performance of all routes, creating easier transfers between routes, and providing better connections to high-demand destinations.

Six of the Rapid’s busiest routes will run every 15 minutes on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of these enhancements. These frequency improvements will translate into 136,000 more area residents and 67,000 more area jobs being located within 1⁄4 mile of 15-minute service, Monday through Friday until 6 p.m.

In addition, new connections to high-demand destinations will be created at the Plainfield Meijer store, RiverTown Crossings Mall, as well as Ivanrest Avenue and Gezon Parkway.

Routes in the Wyoming and Kentwood areas that will be impacted with the changes are:

Route 1, Division and Madison: will now travel to Metro Health on all trips and will loop around the the village to service the VA clinic. The route also will now include Madison between Franklin and Burton streets.

Route 2, Kalamazoo: will no longer go to Kentwood City Hall, but will continue on down Kalamazoo and end at the Gaines Meijer.

Route 3, Wyoming/Rivertown (formerly Route 16): will no longer stop at Metro Health, but instead will turn on 44th Street and end at RiverTown Crossings Mall.

Route 4, Eastern: will be streamlined by taking Cherry directly from Central Station to Eastern. The one-way loop will be eliminated to provide two-way service on 60th and Eastern avenues south of 52nd Street.

Route 5, Wealthy/Woodland: the route will remain unchanged but will include a one-seat ride from downtown to Cascade.

 

Route 6, Eastern/Woodland: inbound will be moved from Ottawa to Monroe to provide better transfers with outer routes. The route will be interlined with Route 44 on weekdays to improve operational efficiency.

 

Route 8, Grandville/Rivertown: will take Wilson Avenue direct to Century Center rather than go down 44th Street. The route also will be extended to the RiverTown Target for transfers.

 

Route 10, Clyde Park: will take over the Division Avenue/68th Street loop from Route 1. The loop, which is south on Clyde Park to east on 54th Street, south on Division Avenue then west on 68th Street and then running north on Clyde Park, will be peak-only on weekdays from 6 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday.

Route 24, Burton: will be extended south on Ivanrest to RiverTown Crossings Mall. The route will go directly to Camelot from Woodland rather than deviating to 28th Street and Lake Eastbrook Drive.

Route 27, Airport Industrial: Route 17 and Route 5 peak extension will be merged into single circular route to supplement the Kentwood on-demand zone during high traffic times. The route will operate in the morning and evening weekday peeks every 30 minutes.

Route 28, West 28th: this route will be split into two routes, with Route 28 to be extended west to Fairlanes through Grandville.

Route 29, East 28th: will take over the route east of Woodland Mall with the loops to Acquest and the YMCA eliminated. Also, the route will only enter the Meijer on Kraft Avenue on the westbound trip.

Route 44, 44th Street: will enter/ext RiverTown Crossings Mall via the Potomac rather than Wilson Avenue due to the mall stop being moved to the east side of the building. Hourly Sunday service from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. will be added.

New CEO of The Rapid talks mobility spectrum, community development on latest WKTV Journal In Focus

Deborah Prato is the new CEO of The Rapid, the public transit system for the Grand Rapids metro area — a large area and an equally large transit system. But Prato, who took the position early this year, has leadership experience in what can only be described as huge transit systems, including New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Prato recently visited the set of WKTV Journal In Focus to talk about what drew her to West Michigan, some of the similarities of services and differences of scale she now faces at The Rapid, and what the pubic needs to know about the present and future of the local transit system — including how articulated busses and motorized scooters can and should co-exist on the streets of Kent County.

“We are consistently reviewing, conducting analysis — what do we need, where do we need it, how do we serve the most?” Prato said. “I think it is not just mass transit, there is interest in a transportation network, and that includes personal mobility.”

Among the topics discussed in detail were how two of the special lines provided by The Rapid — the SilverLine and the Laker Line — are really cooperative ventures with The Rapid working with regional entities to satisfy specific transit needs while also working for the general public.

In addition, she discussed personal mobility and how — as pointed out on The Rapid’s website — “Beyond its fixed routes, The Rapid also operates demand response services for people with disabilities, and for those living outside the fixed-route service area.”

The Rapid to host virtual public hearings for August service changes

The Rapid will host two public hearings to present the recently approved service plan for the Mobility for All (Comprehensive Operational Analysis) project. The service enhancements and changes are planned to go into effect on August 30.

The hearings will be held virtually via Facebook Live on The Rapid’s Facebook page on Tuesday, May 18. In addition to Facebook Live, the meetings will also be accessible via Zoom:

In addition to exhaustive technical and operational analyses, extensive public outreach was conducted to inform the final service plan, including:
    • 57 stakeholder meetings with partners and community organizations
    • 10 virtual public meetings with nearly 300 viewers/participants
    • 3 online surveys with 1,089 responses
    • Multiple interviews with members of The Rapid’s Board of Directors and staff
    • 2000 informational flyers soliciting feedback distributed on Rapid buses (1,500 in English, 500 inSpanish)
    • The full public outreach summary is available in the final “Preferred Alternative” document, beginning on page 320The resulting service plan approved by The Rapid’s Board of Directors to be implemented in August will provide:

  • Access to 15-minute frequent service all day on weekdays to over 136,000 area residents (approximately 6 a.m to 6 p.m.)

  • Access to 15-minute frequent service all day on weekdays to over 67,000 area jobs (approximately 6 a.m to 6 p.m.)

  • New transit access to over 8,000 jobs in Walker and 9,000 jobs in Kentwood via new on-demand service (planned to launch in January 2022)In addition to increased transit access and new services, the plan will improve on-time performance, provide better transfer opportunities for riders and more efficiently meet current transit demand.

“We are very excited to have reached the final stage of this project and to begin preparing for implementation,” said Max Dillivan, senior planner and Mobility for All project manager at The Rapid. “This has been an extremely thorough process from both a technical and public outreach perspective, and despite having to adapt the project to the difficulties presented by the pandemic, we are confident that the final plan represents more reliable, efficient and effective service for our customers.”

Beginning Monday, May 10, The Rapid will implement an enhanced summer service schedule, providing increased access to public transit options across the entire service area.

The Rapid constantly monitors the public transit service it provides, working to adjust operations to offer the most reliable, efficient and effective service possible. Adjustments will be made to bus schedules to provide more service to the six-city area and to improve overall system performance.

Routes in the Wyoming and Kentwood areas that will be impacted are 1 – Division Route, Route 8 – Grandville/Rivertown, and Route 10 – Clyde Park. These routes will have both earlier and later times added to the schedules. Also, Route 2 – Kalamazoo and Route 16 – Wyoming/Metro will see an early start time added to the weekdays.

  • DASH service will now operate on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.


  • DASH service will no longer operate on Saturdays


These service enhancements will expand transit options for Rapid riders as the region continues pandemic recovery efforts.

Community involvement needed to help spur Division Avenue growth

From taking a bike ride or walk to creating a cohort of small developers, there are a number of opportunities for residents and local organizations to help spur growth along Division Avenue.

These were some recommendations, along with some specific items for The Rapid and the cities of Wyoming, Kentwood, and Grand Rapids, that were released in the Division United town hall meetings on April 22.

“A lot of the recommendations that we are going to be talking about might seem substantial and quite frankly they are,” said Steven Duong, who is with Los Angeles-based consulting firm AECOM, which oversaw the Division United plan. “In many cases, they have to be lead by the entity of the cities such as City of Wyoming or the City of Kentwood, and some have to be lead by private business partners, land owners or business owners in the corridor, but we also want to make sure that we acknowledge that there are things that community groups or citizens can do to make some of the strategies a reality.”

The recommendations are broken down into five categories, referred as “toolkits”: Connectivity and Mobility, Economic Development, Incremental Development, Equity, and Placemaking. Many of the recommendations are for the cities to consider when looking at zoning or infrastructure.

For example, Connectivity and Mobility addresses how to make the area friendly for people and cars by painting the bus lane and dedicating the lane for the entire day to help increase public transit speeds to creating better crossings and making the bus stations hub stations with other transit options such as bikes and electric scooters.

While those are most of those recommendations have to be done at the city level through zoning, residents can take a walk or bike through the corridor to see the disconnect between the current transit and offer ideas on where to place crosswalks and other needs to increase mobility, said AECOM Transportation Planner Jeromie Winsor.

Residents can also start to form a cohort of small developers who can network, making connections with bank officials and others in development to start discussions on redeveloping small properties such as suggested in the Incremental Development toolkit.

A Community Connector and local business owner Synia Jordan said another project is creating art murals at the stations which would involve community members and local artists, which falls under the Placemaking toolkit.

The entire Division United proposal is available online with Duong recommending that people start with the executive summary, which is an introduction to the overall plan, and then proceed into the five toolkits.

By following that direction, the different concepts become a roadmap to how the Division Avenue corridor can become a more transit supportive environment, which Duong noted is the reason why the study was initiated.

A transit supportive environment is the utilization of effective and predictable transit that encourages surrounding development, which, in turn, supports transit. It was the goal of The Rapid that by launching the Silver Line in 2014 it would spur economic development along the Division corridor, according to The Rapid Planning Manager Nick Monoyios.

While The Rapid has seen a 40 percent growth in ridership from Division Avenue during the past six years, the economic growth has not come, Monoyios said.

So after six years of operations, The Rapid officials decided it needed to be more intentional on how to instigate the benefits for the corridor, he said, adding that a decision was made to seek a Federal Transportation Administration grant designed to help corridors like Division Avenue. The three cities, Wyoming, Kentwood and Grand Rapids, all of which have portions of Division within their boundaries, each dedicated $25,000 to the study. The student focused on Division from Wealthy Street to 60th Street.
 

After more than a year of gathering public input, meeting with business leaders and residents, and hosting special events to demonstrate the possibilities, The Rapid released the Division United recommendations during two town hall meetings on April 22.

Area residents get first look at proposed Division Avenue improvements

It has been months of work but this Thursday, the proposed transportation and development improvements for the Division Avenue corridor will be released to the public.

The Rapid, in partnership with the cities of Grand Rapids, Kentwood, and Wyoming, will host two Virtual Town Hall meetings Thursday, one at 11 a.m. and the second at 6 p.m., to provide residents with an update on the final phase of the Division United project.

“This has been a very unique and an incredible example of the great work our communities can do together with the right partnerships and approach,” said Nick Monoyious, planning manager at The Rapids. “These virtual town hall meetings will provide an informative summary of plans for Division Avenue and will give anyone interested a chance to ask questions and provide feedback.”

In 2014, The Rapid launched the Silver Line, which was looked at as a catalyst for potential economic ground development leading into the downtown area. The Silver Line runs along Division Avenue from 60th Street in Cutlerville to the Medical Mile/Grand Rapids Community college loop.

However, the economic investment did not come, noted Bill Kirk, a business affairs specialist for The Rapid. The Rapid sought and received a Federal Transportation Administration grant that was about $900,000. The cities of Grand Rapids, Kentwood, and Wyoming, all of which have parts of Division Avenue within their boundaries, contributed about $25,000 each with the grant monies and contributions used to fund a study to find ways to improve affordable housing options, business opportunities, and neighborhood conditions in the corridor without losing much of the diversity that is part of the Division Avenue, Kirk said.

For more than a year, the project has focused on gathering input from community members, business owners, and city officials along with reviewing current building ordinances for the area, and hosting events that showcased possible public improvements.

There are lot of different elements to the final project, said City of Kentwood Economic Development Coordinator Lisa Golder. There are several key elements to the proposal such as incremental improvements, stabilizing the area so those who live and work there benefit from the redevelopment, maintaining the diversity of Division Avenue and providing public improvements to create a more walkable community.

“This is not something that is going to happen over night,” said City of Kentwood Community Development Director Terry Schweitzer.

Golder added that there will be a lot for the cities to review in regards to recommendations to code changes. The cities of Wyoming and Kentwood worked together to create a form-based code for the portion of Division Avenue in the two cities. The code is designed to allow a variety of development from large projects such as the CityLine Apartments project near 52nd Street and Division Avenue to the redevelopment of the property at 4253 S. Division, which will be the home of the new coffeehouse, The Stray Cafe.

“We are excited to welcome The Stray Café to Wyoming and are looking forward to their grand opening this summer,” said Wyoming Director of Planning and Economic Development Nicole Hofert. “Their investment in the corridor exemplifies the type of development we are striving to attract. Business owners and investors will have an easy-to-use set of tools and strategies provided in the Division United Plan as they invest in our community.”

In fact, The Stray Cafe is an example of incremental developments, where one or two lots are redeveloped versus several lots, Schweitzer said. He added that the City of Kentwood has had success with several developers who specialize in redevelopment of small lots and interest is growing for projects along Division Avenue.

“During the process, we have definitely seen more interest on what could be done along the corridor,” Schweitzer said.

It is the hope that Thursday’s virtual meetings will help to spur on that interest by presenting highlights of the improvement plan, which focuses on the section of Division from Wealthy Street to 60th Street. Each session will be live translated into Spanish and Vietnamese.

The Rapid hosts three virtual meetings for feedback on proposed fare program changes

The Rapid is proposing changes to reduced and discounted fare programs for institutional partners, as well some changes to the Wave card system. These changes are intended to simplify and standardize programs in order to make them easier to navigate for riders and partners.

Reduced, Donation, and Discounted Rate Programs The Rapids currently manages programs designed specifically for non-profit organizations, organizations that directly serve people experiencing homelessness, organizations that directly serve people experiencing homelessness, organizations that directly serve people experiencing homelessness, and discounted rates for educational institutions. The proposal would combine these programs and standardize the discounted fare at $1.25 per ticket. This will simplify the programs available to non-profits and post K-12 educational institutions, eliminate multiple discounts or donations programs, and create a more equitable standard for providing discounted cares. 2. Fare Capping Structure As part of the implementation of the Wave fare system, a fare capping structure was put in place that enables riders to “earn” a 1-day pass, 7-day pass, and a 31-day pass on a rolling basis in accordance with how often rides are taken. The proposal recommends a change to monthly capping system, which will cover one calendar month. This change would eliminate the 7-day capping option and keep the one-day and monthly caps. The fare capping will reset on the first day of each new month. This change would simplify fare capping to make it easier to use and understand for all customers.

3. Negative Balance Elimination The implementation of the E-Fare system was initially configured to enable the Wave cards to allow for a negative balance of up to -$1.74. The proposal recommends the elimination of a negative balance allowance on Wave cards. This change will maintain equity among the Wave card categories and improve the ease of use of the Wave care for customers.

4. Shipping Fee The Rapid is proposing a flat shipping fee of $2.50 for all online fare purchase orders being mailed to customers to cover postage fees.

At the end of February, The Rapid will no longer accept paper 10-ride tickets.

 

“We’re excited to continue our Wave card transition to make riding The Rapid as simple as possible,” said Bill Kirk spokesperson at The Rapid. “We encourage all riders and stakeholders to provide us with their feedback and questions to help ensure that we get this change right.” 

The Greater Grand Rapids area public transportation provider has been phasing out the sale of paper tickets since late 2018 due to the complete transition to the Wave card, The Rapid’s electronic fare system. The Rapid will continue to accept cash as a valid form of fare payment. 

Beginning Feb. 22, through March 5, customers will be able to exchange unused 10-ride tickets at the Information Center inside Rapid Central Station during open hours, Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Customers will receive either the value of the 10-ride ticket on their existing Wave card, or they will be provided with a Wave card with the equivalent value, minus the $3 new card fee. Unused Adult 10-ride cards will be exchanged for $13.50 worth of Wave card value, and unused Student or Reduced fare 10-ride tickets will be exchanged for $10.50 (Student) or $8.50 (Reduced) worth of Wave card value. Students and reduced fare riders must bring identification for proof of eligibility. Customers may only exchange up to ten 10-ride paper tickets per day during the exchange period. 

Partner agencies with an existing stock of 10-ride paper tickets can exchange their stock for equivalent Wave card value at The Rapid’s Administration building on Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 9 – 31. West Michigan Vaccine Clinic up and running, seven bus lines drop near DeVos Place

The new West Michigan Vaccine Clinic is up and running and within the first day vaccines about 800, according to officials.

The new venture, which is a partnership between Spectrum Health, Kent County Health Department, Mercy Health St. Mary’s, the new clinic is designed to provide a central location to area residents with the goal of vaccinating up to 20,000 people a day.

Currently, clinic is vaccinating to the amount of vaccine that is made available. For the first week, the hope is to vaccinate 8,500 people, according to Spectrum Health Public Relations Corporate Manager Ellen Bristol.

 

One of the concerns has been parking, which according to Spectrum Health Chief Operating Officer Brian Brasser, who is overseeing the West Michigan Vaccine Clinic, said people can park below the facility with the first two hours of parking waived. This will be enough time for a person to go through the line and receive the vaccine, Brasser said.

 

This week, The Rapid announced it has several bus routes that provide service to or near DeVos Place.

The routes with direct service is Lake Line, Silver Line, Route 11, and DASH North.

 

Bus routes that have stops near DeVos Place are Route 9 (Alpine), Route 13 (Michigan/Fuller) and DASH West.

As pandemic continues, The Rapid bus services adapt to continue safe travels

Throughout 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has continued affecting the daily lives of the people of Grand Rapids, including commuters and other riders of The Rapid transit system. And as the community has moved forward and adapted, its public transit system has moved forward with cleaning procedures and safety protocols for its buses and the citizens who ride them daily.

 

WKTV took a ride on The Rapid’s SilverLine and spoke with Bill Kirk, Business Affairs Specialist of The Rapid, on the sanitization of the buses daily using antiseptic agents as well as how it encourages passengers to wear masks and practice social distancing.

And what they have learned about cleaning and sanitization will likely become standard operating procedure even in a post-pandemic future.

“We take pride in how clean our buses are, but after experiencing the situation, we want to maintain those policies even after the pandemic goes away,” Kirk said. “We just want to make sure we’re providing as safe and as healthy a ride as possible for our riders.”

 

The Rapid public transportation system provides services to the greater Grand Rapids area, including Wyoming, and Kentwood. Formed in 2000, The Rapid operates on fixed routes throughout Grand Rapids and works with people with disabilities for their services. They also provide the SilverLine, a transit started in 2014 that runs along Division Avenue south and loops around the Rapid Central Station in Grand Rapids.

The Rapid to host public outreach sessions on proposed Wyoming, Kentwood service changes

The Rapid announced last week that its Mobility for All planning process will continue its public outreach efforts this week with a series of virtual meetings to gather feedback on proposed changes to The Rapid’s bus service that may take effect in the fall of 2021.

Possible changes to The Rapid’s Southwest service area — including Routes 8, 10, 16, 24, 28, 44 and the Silver Line — will be discussed on Facebook Live and Zoom platforms Thursday, Oct. 15, from 9-10 a.m. and again from 6-7 p.m. (See a Facebook page on this event here.)

According to the announcement, the proposed changes to route alignments, stops and schedules, and the introduction of new on-demand zones, are a result of more than a year of “technical analysis and public feedback” on The Rapid’s current operations.

“These meetings will offer multiple opportunities for public feedback and input on proposed changes that we believe will offer improved service and innovative new options to our riders,” Nick Monoyios, planning manager at The Rapid, said in supplied material. “COVID-19 has forced us to change our approach to outreach and engagement, but we’re confident that our process will create the best possible outcome for our riders and the community.”

The interactive digital workshops will be offered twice a day Monday, Oct. 12 through Thursday, Oct. 15 to highlight the proposed changes and offer participants the opportunity for questions, feedback, and suggestions.

There will be a comprehensive overview on Friday morning, Oct. 16, from 9-10 a.m.

The other sessions which will focus on other specific geographic areas and routes in The Rapid’s service area include:

 

Northeast Service Changes — Routes 11, 13, 14, 15  — Oct. 12, 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

 

Southeast Service Changes — Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 17, 28, 44 — Oct. 13, 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

 

Northwest Service Changes — Routes 7, 9, 12, 18, Laker Line — Oct. 14, 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

 

According to the announcement, additional feedback will be solicited throughout the month of October, and will be part of informing final recommendations to The Rapid’s Board of Directors in early 2021.

“Started in 2019, Mobility for All, also known as a Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA) in the transit industry, is an effort to improve the efficiency, productivity and reliability of The Rapid’s bus service,” according to the announcement. “By working within The Rapid’s current budget constraints, Mobility for All will result in better transit and mobility service without additional cost to the taxpayers in The Rapid’s service area.”

It has been 15 years since The Rapid conducted a COA and this plan accounts for changes in demand for transit, travel patterns, emerging mobility technologies and relies on extensive public engagement and feedback. Initial changes to bus service as the result of the COA would take effect in the fall of 2021.

Should The Rapid’s Board of Directors decide to move forward with the proposed changes, additional public hearings and opportunities for feedback will take place in early 2021.

Weekend events designed to create a united Division while defining the area’s vision for the future

The discussion of what the vision should be along Division Avenue will continue this weekend as The Rapid’s Silver Line hosts a series of events that will temporary transform three intersections along the roadway into safer, more active and vibrant spaces.

Each event has a theme with the events starting on Friday, Oct. 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. with the Everyone’s Plaza at Division Avenue and Logan Street. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, will be two events, Everyone’s Corner on Division Avenue and Burton Street and Division Art & Cultural Market at Division Avenue and 43rd Street. All the events will include food, family fun, music, and other activities related to the theme. All the events are free but attendees are required to follow COVID-19 health and safety guidelines including face coverings and social distancing.

In partnership with Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. and the cities of Grand Rapids, Kentwood and Wyoming, the Division United project kicked off in February, just before the COVID-19 lockdown, with a series of open houses at Division Avenue businesses. The open houses were designed to gather input from residents, community leaders and business owners about what they wanted to see along Division Avenue.

Despite COVID-19, the Division United project has continued with some changes.

“We were planning to have a team of ambassadors made up of residents and stakeholders going out and talking to businesses owners and residents about what are some of the different things they would like to see along Division,” said Bill Kirk, business affairs specialist for The Rapid. “Initially, have some in-person interactions.”

A shift was made to community connectors, people who are pretty well known in Kentwood, Wyoming and/or Grand Rapids, who are doing some personal outreach to the community. The Rapid also has been pushing its online survey at divisionunited.org

Through this process, Kirk said the group has received some good feedback and learned a few things that the community would like to see such as vehicle traffic slowing down at the intersection of 48th Street and Division Avenue where the Kelloggsville High School is close by.

“For the most part, what people want is more development and activity in the area, but they wanted it done right with future plans being of the mindset that think about Division Avenue specifically while not displacing the communities that are already there,” Kirk said.

The events this weekend, which were organized with help from Better Block, a national nonprofit that specializes in activating underutilized urban areas, are designed to help residents and others envision the possibilities along Division Avenue. There will be no road closures so those traveling in the area will not be impacted.

Division United follows the Silver Line bus route along South Division Avenue that runs from 60th Avenue in Cutlerville to the Medical Mile/Grand Rapids Community College loop. The Silver Line was Michigan’s first Bus Rapids Transit (BRT) service. When launched in 2014, the Silver Line was looked at as a catalyst for potential economic ground development leading into the downtown area.

 

Hoping to spark the economic development, the Silver Line received a $696,000 Federal Transportation Administration grant to conduced a study with a $174,000 Michigan Department of Transportation match The cities of Grand Rapids, Kentwood, and Wyoming, which have parts of Division Avenue within their boundaries, each contributed $25,000 to the project. The Division United project is to find ways to improve affordable housing options business opportunities, and neighborhood conditions in the corridor without losing much of the diversity that is part of Division Avenue, Kirk said.

Along with utilizing input from residents, the study also includes data on land usage and codes. 

All three cities, Grand Rapids, Kentwood, and Wyoming, are in various phases of updating their master plans with the cities leaving the Division corridor open until the Division United study is complete, which will be in early 2021. For more information about the project, visit divisionavenue.org.

The annual Metro Cruise is always popular, with visitor parking often at a premium, and the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 28th Street Metro Cruise on Aug. 23-24 will be no different.

But thanks to a partnership with The Rapid, there will be two shuttle buses running from nearby but off 28th Street parking locations — Wyoming High School and the Wyoming’s Kent District Library — where visitors can park easily and take a free shuttle to and from all the action.

“The Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce is excited with our partnership with The Rapid to operate two shuttle buses for the 28th Street Metro Cruise,” Bob O’Callaghan, President/CEO of the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce, said to WKTV. “We thank The Rapid for their continued support of the chamber and the 28th Street Metro Cruise.”

The free buses supplied by The Rapid will shuttle Cruise attendees from Wyoming High School, 1350 Prairie Parkway, and the Wyoming library, 3350 Michael to Rogers Plaza every 20 to 30 minutes during the peak times on Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24. Exact times of the shuttle service is as-yet to be determined.

WKTV Community Media will produce a 1-hour special live broadcast scheduled to air at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.

WKTV has also started early to bring local audiences a full slate of games began with the final varsity game to be played at South Christian High School’s current location when the Lady Sailors entertained Hamilton on Dec. 4. But we will also showcase the new location on Kalamazoo Avenue just north of 84th Street, as WKTV will bring the opening night games as both the boys and girls initiate the new gymnasium when they host Unity Christian on Friday, Dec. 21.

It does not technically beat Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 cameo appearances, however; if you add in all the non-Marvel appearances and his animation work, Lee definitely beat Hitchcock. Also, posthumously, Lee will make cameos in Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, both set to be released in 2019.

WKTV reviews the candidates and millage proposals for the 2017 elections

Tomorrow, Nov. 7, is election day and residents in both the cities of Kentwood and Wyoming have items on the ballot.

 

City of Kentwood

 

In the City of Kentwood, residents will be electing their city officials for the next four years. Of the six city positions up for election in Kentwood, only two are contested.

 

The first race is for the office of mayor, featuring incumbent Stephen Kepley who will be facing challenger Scott Urbanowski. Kepley was elected to the mayoral position in 2013 having served as a city engineer. Urbanowski is president and founder of Humanoid Digital, a digital media company.

The other contested race in the City of Kentwood is a 1st Ward City Commissioner seat with incumbent Jerry DeMaagd facing challenger Emily Bridson. There are also four races in Kentwood that are unopposed. Those are Dan Kasunic, for clerk, Laurie Sheldon, for treasurer, Betsy Artz, for commissioner at large, and Tom McKelvey, for 2nd Ward city commissioner.

 

City of Wyoming

 

Those in the Wyoming Public School District, the largest district in the City of Wyoming, will be voting on an extension of the district’s millage for $79.5 million to be used on infrastructure projects. The Rapid seeks a 1.47 millage renewal to keep buses running through Kentwood, Wyoming

At the upcoming Nov. 7 election, residents of the cities of Wyoming and Kentwood are being asked to consider a 1.47 millage rate so that The Rapid can continue serving these cities along with four other municipalities in the greater Grand Rapids area.

 

The millage request, which is listed as the Interurban Transit Partnership Board Transit Millage Ballot Proposal 2018-2019 on the Nov. 7 ballot, is not an increase, but rather would replace the current Rapid millage of 1.47 mills which is set to expire in July of 2018.

 

According to information supplied by The Rapid, for a $100,000 home with a taxable value of $50,000, the homeowner would continue to pay around $73.50 a year for the millage. The millage, which has been active for the past seven years, is about a third of The Rapid’s total budget of $44 million, covering about $15.5 million. The majority of the rest of the budget comes from the Michigan Department of Transportation’s local bus operating assistance and passenger fares.

 

Because the millage makes up such a large percentage of The Rapids’ operational expenses, without the renewal, most of the fixed route services that the millage helps fund would not be be able to operate, according to The Rapid Marketing and Communications Director Michael Bulthuis, who sat down to talk about the millage in a recent WKTV Journal: In Focus segment.

 

 

“Most of our riders are using the bus at least once a week, if not every day, for a work related activity,” Bulthuis said. “If you consider that we have between 11 to 12 million rides every year, 80 percent of those rides are work related trips.”

 

Each of the cities of Wyoming and Kentwood have nine Rapid routes not counting the Silver Line. These are among the 22 routes that would potentially be shut down if the millage doesn’t pass.

 

“You would start to see service cuts, frankly, because you’re not getting that $15.5 million in millage funding,” Bulthuis said. “That millage funding also helps leverage state funding so you’re losing millions of dollars in state funding as well.”

 

The millage has been active for the last seven years, and if it passes, will continue at the same rate of 1.47 for twelve more years. If, however, it doesn’t pass, all of The Rapids’ normal bus routes would cease. The Rapid would only be able to operate on a contractual basis for entities that would entirely cover the cost of its service. Go!Bus, the service for the elderly and disabled, would also be drastically decreased, putting people in that demographic at risk of missing doctor’s appointments or other needed services.

 

The millage funds are only used for everyday expenses such as wages for employees, fuel, tires, and other essential needs. It is not used for other projects such as new buses, buildings, or project construction. The Silver Line, which operates along Division Avenue connecting downtown Grand Rapids to the cities of Kentwood and Wyoming, would also not be affected since it is funded by state and federal grants.

The Rapids requests feedback to help plan future transit

Today The Rapid announced the launch of an online feedback tool aimed at gathering input from the public about the area’s transit system. The Align Transit Improvement Study, a yearlong project which started with planning and outreach meetings in May, aims to capture feedback from both riders and non-riders that will help the public transit agency prioritize improvements over the next decade.

 

The short online feedback tool can be found at http://aligntransit.org/.

 

After the public feedback period ends on Sept. 30, Align Transit Improvement Study officials will analyze the feedback and provide an initial report to The Rapid’s board of directors in November. A final, comprehensive report will be published and presented to the board in May 2018.

 

This study is focused on supporting The Rapid’s short-range transit plan. The Align Study will identify, analyze and prioritize a set of transit improvement recommendations that could be made to the existing transit system. It is not connected to any funding initiatives nor does it guarantee that changes will be made; it is simply an opportunity to gather rider and non-rider feedback to ensure the network meets growing demand and keeps pace with changing regional growth patterns.

 

Rapid officials hope the study will identify ways to add to and improve the network, recommend land use and other policies to help grow ridership and determine the improvements the public would like to see for the system.

 

“Public transportation is a vital part of Grand Rapids and its surrounding communities—whether you ride The Rapid daily, occasionally, or have yet to try public transportation,” said Peter Varga, CEO, The Rapid. “The Rapid has helped connect thousands of people across our community for years. The Align Study is an opportunity to work together and ‘Align’ for better public transit in the metro region, so we encourage the public to engage with the short online feedback tool.”

 

The online feedback tool is an interactive public engagement platform that allows community stakeholders as well as frequent Rapid riders and non-riders alike to provide the pivotal input needed to ensure that future enhancements to the transit system meet the needs of the community. The platform is mobile-friendly for all devices and features a variety of interactive exercises including ranking enhancement priorities, and an interactive map where participants can place comments to provide specific locations where enhancements are most important.

 

With the help of the public, the Align Transit Improvement Study hopes to accomplish the following:

 

  • Enhance transit services that provide a competitive option to congested roadways
  • Provide safe and equitable access to The Rapid network
  • Service existing and future population and employment centers
  • Support urban revitalization and economic development

 

 

Knowing that many riders use The Rapid to get to and from work, Align Study leaders are hopeful that business owners and employees will provide feedback.

 

“The Align Study is important to The Rapid because it will hone in on service enhancements that are desired by the community, especially for our employment-based riders,” said Conrad Venema, The Rapid’s strategic planning manager and Align Study leader. “The Rapid realizes that as the community grows, it’s vital for our transit system to adapt to the changing needs of users. The Align Study will help The Rapid achieve its goal of providing safe and equitable service that connects people to jobs, promotes economic development and offers a first-class transit experience,” Venema added.

Get active by commuting via bike or The Rapid as part of Active Commute week

Active Commute Week returns June 12 – 15 to the Greater Grand Rapids area as many get ready to ride their bikes or take the bus to participate.

 

The goal of Active Commute Week is to raise awareness about the health, economic and environmental benefits of active travel. The week is a chance for individual participants and teams to earn points for using active transportation, including bicycling, walking, riding The Rapid, carpooling, running, longboarding or inline skating.

 

Participants fill out a form and are notified through The Rapids when their account is ready. Teams and individuals can track their active transportation online during the week for a chance to win prizes.

 

Several organizations have signed up to participate such as Metro Health – University of Michigan Health, which will be hosting one of the Bike to Work Day Pit Stops on Fray, June 16. Metro Health will be hosting at the Fred Meijer M-6 trail near Metro  Way off of Byron Center Avenue. This is an entrance to Metro Health. Also Grand Valley State University has joined as a sponsor and will  host bike ride with President Thomas J. Haas on Monday, June 12. The ride will be from the center of the Allendale Campus to the Sustainable Agriculture Project on Luce Street.

 

Participants will meet at the Bill Seidman statue near Mary Idema Pew Library at 4 p.m. Helmets are required, and the Grand Valley Police Department will provide an escort. Refreshments will be served at the SAP and bicyclists can join a guided ride back to campus at 5:30 p.m.

 

Join the Active Commute Week Committee and the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition for The Handlebar Happy Hour Friday, June 16, at Long Road Distillers, 537 Leonard St. NW.  The event takes places from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. The winners of the Active Commute Week Challenge will be announced and prizes awarded. Awards and a raffle will take place at approximately 6:30 p.m. This event is open to everyone.

The Rapids announces changes to bus route along 68th Street

The Rapid recently announced a route change due to the recent closing of the KMart on 68th Street.

 

Effective Monday, Jan. 16, the Route 1 southbound buses will no longer travel through the parking lot to the bus stops by the former KMart building. The Route 1 buses will travel west on 68th Street from Division Avenue to Clyde Park and then right on Clyde Park Avenue to Meijer located on 54th Street.

 

According to The Rapid, riders will still have access to the Orchard Plaza located on 68th Street via the current bus stop on 68th Street at the drive by Taco Bell, 695 68th St. SW, as well as a new bus stop located at the corner of 68th Street and Clyde Park Avenue.

 

Route 1 southbound travels Central Station up Granville Avenue to Fulton Street and then down Division Avenue across 54th Street, looping through Meijer at 54th Street and heading west on 54th Street and then south on Division Avenue to 68th Street. The route then heads east on 68th Street to Clyde Park and returns to the Meijer on 54th Street where the northbound Route 1 starts.

Discounted Go!Bus Ticket Program gets seniors where they need to go

go busAre you 60 or older? Need a ride to a medical appointment or other local destination?

 

The Rapid’s Go!Bus Ticket Program offers a door-to-door transportation service for seniors age 65+ and persons with disabilities who cannot ride a fixed-route bus.

 

GO!Bus is a shared ride, advanced reservation, ADA paratransit service. GO!Bus riders share trips traveling in the same direction at the same time. Trips are scheduled without regard to the purpose of the trip. The Rapid also provides GO!Bus service to non-disabled seniors (NDS) aged 65 and older.

 

Non-disabled senior citizens must present proof of age (i.e., copy of driver’s license, birth certificate, etc.) with their completed application. To use the service due to disability, you must complete an ADA application AND ‘Professional Verification of Functional Disability’ form.

 

Once you’re approved, the GO!Bus provides service in the same area and at the same days and times as The Rapid fixed-route buses. Go!Bus is also available to companions of qualified riders, personal care attendants (PCAs) and service animals. To ensure there is a seat available for companions, be sure to notify GO!Bus that you will have someone accompanying you when you make your reservation. Read the Go!Bus rider’s guide here.

 

Reduced-price tickets for the Inter-urban Transit Partnership (ITP) Go!Bus service are available to Kent County residents who are approved Go!Bus riders, thanks to funding by the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan. Community Coalition Declares Fare Strike and Day of Action Against The Rapid

The Rapid - Central StationThe Rapid provides necessary public transportation for students and citizens in the Grand Rapids area. Recent developments with The Rapid, and proposed decisions from the board, are leading some community members, labor groups, and students to perform a day of action and fare strike on January 27.

 

The Rapid’s Board is proposing cuts that would strip transit workers of their pensions and also increase the fare price by 16 percent. These proposals, and the resulting angst and action from the community, comes after nearly a year of failed negotiations between The Rapid’s management and its workers.

Currently, the pension plan is set up where The Rapid puts $1 per hour worked by an employee into the pension system without the employees contributing anything. The Rapid has proposed putting 5 percent of employee pay into a 401(k) style retirement account that shifts the risk and reward of investment returns to the employee. The union wants a guaranteed pension with less risk and is willing to contribute money into the system.

 

The issues are forcing community members to speak out and take action.

 

“I have been involved because I know that what The Rapid is doing to its workers is setting a precedent all across Grand Rapids, a city that already has a 26 percent poverty rate,” said Lindsey Disler, a student and USAS member at Grand Valley State University. “What the Rapid is doing continues to increase the already huge wealth inequality in our country.”

Union negotiators have said management is refusing to bargain in good faith. Back in 2015, some union bus drivers attempted to distribute flyers to the public in order to educate the masses on the dilemma the drivers faced. The Rapid quickly shut down the attempt and threatened drivers with discipline and arrest.

 

In September of that same year, U.S. District Judge Janet Neff found that The Rapid officials violated the bus drivers First Amendment rights by stopping the handouts of the publication.

 

The day of action and fare strike will focus on riders refusing to pay their fares for the day. Riders are encouraged to politely inform their driver that “The Rapid’s recent actions toward its workers and riders is a form of economic violence that I won’t condone. Because it is illegal for union bus drivers like you to go on strike in Michigan, I am doing the closest thing that I can as a rider by engaging in this one-day fare strike.”

 

While the fare strike is sure to ruffle some feathers, it’s final goal hinges on bringing together The Rapid and the union to meaningfully sit down and come to a compromise that works for both parties.

 

“We care deeply about the well-being of these workers, because they literally keep this city moving. Until they’re granted a fair contract, we won’t be silent and will not stop standing up for them,” explained Disler. “The Rapid can do better for its workers.”
