Garage Bar & Grill hosting open interviews for new Ada location

Just four months after Third Coast Development and Garage Bar & Grill owner and operator Kevin Farhat announced plans to open a Garage Bar & Grill in Ada, the team is now setting their sights on hiring 47 workers to staff the establishment. To help expedite the hiring process, Garage Bar & Grill is hosting open interviews every Saturday in October from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new location, 518 Ada Drive. Applicants will be interviewed by Farhat and executive chef and general manager Joe Peebles and potentially hired that day or by the end of October.

Garage Bar & Grill is looking for hospitality-minded people to help Garage “run a good party” as its tagline says. Farhat is looking to fill part-time and full-time staff, ranging from dishwashers, cooks, servers, bartenders, and other front-of-house staff. Wages for some positions will start at $15 per hour. Once hired, staff will receive training at the Ottawa Avenue location before starting at the Ada location.

“We take pride in running a good party, and the main ingredients are delicious, never-frozen food, tasty drinks, great prices and amazing customer service,” Farhat said. “We take pride in hiring some great people who want to give each customer a great experience at Garage Bar & Grill, so we’re hopeful there are some cool food service pros around the region that are ready to take the party to Ada!”

Peebles, who Farhat brought on in July to overhaul the menu and manage the Ada location, is eager to open the new location with great staff.

“The new Garage Bar & Grill location will be very inviting to visitors who are looking for a fun atmosphere, great food and drinks and comfortable vibe,” said Peebles in a July news release announcing his arrival. “We would love to staff the new location with people that know how to provide that experience. We offer a high-volume environment, but we try to be low volume on drama!”

  1. Bring personal identification. Bring your state ID/drivers’ license and social security cards and with you. Additionally, some employers require state ID/drivers’ license numbers on applications. (Listing wrong numbers can cause a hold-up in receiving unemployment benefits.)
  2. Have access to a detailed work history. If you are seeking unemployment benefits, you will need a list of employers and dates of employment to file a claim. Write it down on a notepad, type it in an email or save it on your phone so you can access it from the service center. This can also help you build a resume, if you don’t already have one.
  3. Have a resume? Bring it with you. One of the first steps in finding new employment is creating a Pure Michigan Talent Connect account and uploading a resume to your profile. You can use a computer at the service center to create a digital version of your resume if you don’t already have one. Uploading your resume is also a part of the unemployment claim process and required to receive benefits.
  4. Be ready to work. Be prepared to answer questions that will assess your interests and skills to match you with a job that is a good fit for you. Expect to search and apply for multiple positions that interest you. Finding a job is like having a job. The more work you put in, the better the results! 
  5. Dress like you would for an interview. West Michigan Works! regularly hosts hiring events with local employers who have current openings. You never know when a job opportunity might present itself. Be ready to meet potential employers any time you visit a service center by dressing interview-ready.

There are nearly 43,000 Spanish speakers living in Kent County according to the 2013-2017 American Community Survey. To better serve all of the area’s residents, West Michigan Works! recently launched a Spanish language website at es.westmiworks.org. Spanish speakers can learn—in their native language—how to begin filing for unemployment and registering for work, where to find the nearest service center and what kinds of job search services are available.


Another Spanish resource included on the site is the annual Hot Jobs List. This report lists the top 100 jobs that have a high growth rate, pay over $13 per hour and are in demand by local employers. The list includes the average wage and typical training or education requirements for each occupation. It also identifies which occupations are eligible for West Michigan Works! training scholarships. You can check out the 2019 Hot Jobs List in Spanish at es.westmiworks.org/hot-jobs-2/.


West Michigan Works! provides free job search services to all job seekers. Utilizing their services does not require proof of citizenship and will not affect the citizenship application process.

Employment Expertise: March 3-9 is Women in Construction Week

FACT: In 2016 women made up only 9.1% of the construction workforce in the U.S. 


FACT: Construction jobs are expected to grow between 11% and 32% over the next five years in West Michigan. 


FACT: The gender pay gap is much narrower in construction. In the U.S. women in all industries earn on average 81.1% of what men do. In construction the average is 95.7.


The construction industry is a virtually untapped source of high-demand, well-paying jobs for women. Women in Construction Week focuses on raising awareness of the opportunities available in construction and emphasizing the growing role of women in the industry.


Is a career in construction right for you?

  • Do you enjoy making repairs (painting, fixing appliances, etc.)?
  • Does it give you satisfaction to see the result of your work?
  • Do you enjoy math and solving technical problems/puzzles?
  • Do you like to work or play outside, even in cold and hot weather?
  • Can you work at heights or in confined spaces? Can you work in places that may be extremely noisy, dirty, hot, cold, wet or smelly?
  • Are you safety conscious?
  • Can you cope with being the only, or one of just a few, women on a job site?
  • Do you have the ability to meet rigid attendance requirements (reliable childcare, transportation, etc.)?

If you can answer yes to some of these questions, a career in construction could be a good fit for you. Consider learning more about construction jobs and training programs in your area. 


Where do I begin?

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) offers a variety of construction trades training opportunities. They have job training programs in Introduction to Construction, Residential Construction and Construction Electrical. GRCC also offers a variety of continuing education programs in construction and a U.S. Department of Labor registered Construction Electrical Apprenticeship Program.

In 2018 West Michigan Works! (WMW) helped 44,890 job seekers, served 3,193 employers and filled 10,463 jobs. This work isn’t done in isolation; it’s accomplished through partnerships with employers, training providers, educators and community organizations. Each December, WMW looks back over the year and recognizes a few of its key partners:

Flexfab, a manufacturer based in Hastings, MI, received the 2018 Employer of the Year award due to their dedication to developing their current workforce, engaging future manufacturing talent and recruiting diverse employees. Flexfab is committed to providing education and training so their workers can obtain higher paying jobs within the company. They also work with local organizations, like Barry County Veterans associations, to target a diverse job seeker pool. 

Literacy Center of West Michigan (LCWM) is West Michigan Works! 2018 Partner of the Year. They received this award because they successfully use community partnerships to create positive change. LCWM has partnered with the local construction industry, Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) and the Urban League to provide workplace English as a Second Language instruction for participants in the construction training program. They also provide literacy services at one of West Michigan Works! service centers. Providing instruction like this to job seekers helps remove language barriers and can help them obtain further training, education and/or a good job.

The Michigan Works! Impact Awards honor those who have built economic results by actively creating jobs and developing fresh talent in their communities. In West Michigan, Spectrum Health, GRCC and Sterile Processing Technician, Gina Mancha, received the 2018 Impact Award. To address a common need in the health care field, West Michigan Works! partnered with health care employers, GRCC and the US Department of Labor to create the Sterile Processing Technician Registered Apprentice program. Through this program, Gina was able to learn a new skill and start a new career after working for years in automotive manufacturing.

Don’t let long shopping lists and holiday parties distract you from your job search this month. Many people pause their search until the New Year, but December is a good month to look for a job. Here’s why:

 

Fewer people look

 

Many job seekers put their job search on hold during the busy holiday season. Use this time to get ahead of the competition by applying to jobs and connecting with recruiters. Overwhelmed with your to-do list this month? Balance your job search and holiday activities by blocking out time every day for job search activities.

 

Plenty of networking opportunities

 

The holidays are a great excuse to reconnect with people you’ve met through networking. Ask them to coffee or lunch to catch up. These meetings will strengthen your relationship and keep you top of mind as they move into the New Year.

 

Consider holiday parties as another networking opportunity. Meet someone new and let them know you’re job searching (even if it’s your grandma’s neighbor!). Make sure to leave your resume at home.

 

Extra time with recruiters

 

Recruiters are more likely to respond to your email because they aren’t as busy this month. Apply to relevant job postings and follow up with an email to the recruiter. Give them a chance to get to know you now, so they’ll remember you once 2019 hiring begins.

 

Did you get an Out of Office reply? Great! If they don’t respond to your email upon return, welcome them back to work and then ask your questions.

 

Keep up your momentum

Employment Expertise: The thank you note: a post-interview essential

You submitted your resume, got an interview and left the interview feeling great. Before you celebrate, there’s one last step to your job search:

 

A thank you note.

 

One in three employers think less of a candidate who doesn’t send a thank you note. One in ten wouldn’t hire someone if they don’t send a thank you note, according to Career Builder.

 

Here are some tips to help you write a memorable thank you note:

  • Keep it short, professional and sincere.
  • Send the note within 24 hours of your interview.
    • Hiring managers are busy. If they receive your note a day or two after your interview, it shows them you are organized. And, it helps them remember you as they make hiring decisions.
  • A hand-written note is best.
    • The average hiring manager receives 100+ emails a day. Make your thank you note stand out by sending it through the postal service instead of their clogged inbox.
  • Choose a thank you note that is simple and professional.
    • Avoid cartoons, silly sayings and bright colors.
  • Use the three sentence rule:
    • #1: thank them for the interview.
      • “Thank you for taking the time to interview me yesterday.”
    • #2: Add something personal from your interview.
      • Reference a specific conversation or a question they asked. Or, talk about something you liked from the interview.
      • “I really enjoyed hearing more about your company culture.”
    • #3: Repeat your interest in the job.
      • Remind them you’ll be a great addition to their organization.
      • “I look forward to working with you in the future. My background will help [name of organization] continue to grow.”
    • Don’t forget to add “Dear [their name]” and the beginning, and “Sincerely, [your name]” at the end.

Seven West Michigan service workers recognized for going ‘above and beyond’

Seven area service workers received a 2018 Beverly A. Drake Essential Service Award for integrity, commitment and passion in their jobs. The Essential Service Awards honor non-managerial employees who provide critical services that often go unnoticed and unrewarded.

 

“The business community often overlooks the significant contributions that service workers make in our region and economy,” said Dave Smith, chair of the West Michigan Works! Workforce Development Board. “The Essential Service Awards recognize exceptionally hardworking individuals who perform these crucial jobs.”

  • Gordy Bacheller, custom furniture assembler, Bold Furniture (20 years)
  • Kelle Bergers, housekeeper, Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan (28 years)
  • Nicholas Borgman, customer service representative, Quality Car Wash (4 years)
  • Riley Frens, nurse technician, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital (3 years)

Employers, co-workers and the community can submit Essential Service Award nominations in a variety of industries including housekeeping, hospitality, retail, healthcare, transportation, administrative, food service, general labor, childcare, nonprofit and custodial, or government.

 

2018 honoree Kelle Bergers is known for going above and beyond. Each day, Bergers ensures that the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan is sanitary for families of children traveling to Grand Rapid for their child’s medical or mental health treatment.

 

“I’m honored to receive this award, but I don’t need the recognition. I am just doing my part to make sure our guests’ experience is the best it can be,” Bergers said.

 

Kelle was nominated by her manager Megan Priester, services director at Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan.

 

“To explain every way that Kelle has impacted our organization would take hours; she is a shining light,” said Priester.  “Our families love seeing her so much that they often come back years later to visit her.  There is not another human being like Kelle.”

 

Priester recalled a time when a guest room was left in an extremely less than desirable state.

 

“Other staff looked at the room and turned around, but not Kelle. She methodically cleaned the room section by section until it was finished,” said Priester. “After Kelle was finished, she simply let the front office know it was ready, never looking for praise.”

Our Westside Service Center is one of three places job seekers can visit in Kent County. We’d like to introduce you to the service center manager, Juan Rosario.

 

What is your favorite part of your job?

 

My favorite part of my job is our intentionality with being part of the community. We are more than just workshops; we are a helping hand and a friendly face. We try to be the neighborhood know-it-all so we can always connect job seekers to resources.

 

Insider tip: when’s the best time for job seekers to come to the service center?

 

The best time for job seekers to come to the service center may sometimes be their worst time. We will help guide and alleviate frustrations that come with struggling to navigate through systems on their own.

 

But if you think the “best time” means when we are the least busy, I would say early morning and late in the day.

 

What is something we offer that you wish more job seekers knew about?

 

I wish more job seekers attended our Career Exploration and Employability Skills workshops. These two workshops set the framework for identifying interests and skills and how to align them with a high demand career. These workshops are helpful for everyone, regardless of industry or position.

 

What energizes you?

 

My family, and hope for humanity. Among the chaos and conflict all over the world there are acts of kindness being performed but not by people of different races, not by people of different religions, and not by people of different countries, but by one being the Human Being.

 

What skill would you like to master?

 

I would like to master carpentry; the ability to build your own home or “tiny” home would be extremely gratifying. That, or speaking every language in the world.

 

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on without any preparation?

 

How my 9 year old son’s obsession with FORTNITE (video game) affects his ability to do chores, or I could present on TACOS but who can’t talk about tacos for 40 minutes.

Employment Expertise: Honoring those who serve

During the week of Nov. 12, West Michigan Works! service centers will honor those who served in the military by offering job search services and events with a focus on veterans.

 

“We serve veterans every day, but we want to set aside this special time to highlight their service and their specific career needs,” said Brittany Lenertz, West Michigan Works! talent solutions director. “From offering coffee and displaying the flags of the Armed Forces in our centers to providing access to veteran-friendly resources, we want to show our gratitude to the men and women who served our country.”

 

Workshops

 

The week’s schedule of free workshops will include information to address veterans’ job search needs. For example, the resume workshop will help veterans convey their military experience with civilian language that hiring managers can easily understand.

 

“So many of the skills learned during military service transfer to civilian life—it’s all in the language used when you talk or write about them,” said Karen Riggs, a talent development instructor with West Michigan Works!

 

Community Resources

 

Several of the service centers will hold resource fairs that will highlight community resources for veterans. This may include anything from entrepreneurship workshops through the Small Business Development Center to assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services.

 

Hiring Events

 

Veteran-friendly employers will be in the service centers as either an Employer of the Day or a part of a larger multi-employer hiring event. As always, veterans and their spouses receive early access to Michigan Works! hiring events.

 

Veterans can participate in any of these activities by visiting a West Michigan Works! service center Nov. 13-16 (the service centers will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12). Meet the Employer: Davidson Plyforms

Davidson Plyforms is the largest curved plywood manufacturer in North America. They make wood furniture pieces for customers like Haworth, Steelcase and Herman Miller. Their products are used daily around the world in offices, hospitals, schools and homes.

 

There is no typical day at Davidson Plyforms because their jobs are small volume orders.

 

“Each order requires different finishes and pieces to make,” said Joe Wiersma, press operator and cell leader. “I might work on chair backs, then switch to stool seats and then chair arms. I like that my job changes a lot.”

 

Craftsman-type work

 

The manufacturing process begins with thin sheets of veneer stacked together. Then they’re pressed to create the curve and finished to the customer’s specifications. Large machines do the actual curving and cutting, but the machine operator’s attention to detail makes a difference between a good or great final product.

 

“The work we do is so intricate; you can see the impact of each operator’s touch on the piece. These jobs are very craftsmen-like positions,” said Mark Walkington, plant manager.

 

When a new employee joins the Davidson Plyforms team, they’re paired with a trainer-mentor who guides them through the onboarding process for this unique job.

 

One team

 

A strong team is integral to the success of the company. Team members are valued for the strengths they bring to Davidson Plyforms.

 

“We can tell you a lot about the people who work for us; what they do, how they do it and what their strengths and weaknesses are. We try to utilize everyone’s strengths to build a strong team,” said Sicilio Puente, finishing department lead.

 

Seven years ago, Devin Marcinowski was hired as a second shift press operator.

 

“Some coworkers encouraged me to apply for a CNC Programmer position. I’m glad they kept nudging me to do it. Now I’m a first shift CNC programmer and I’m going to school to finish my degree,” Marcinowski said.

Perks and incentives

With the high demand for seasonal workers, employers know they need to offer competitive wages. Many retailers have increased their starting wage. Kohl’s at Woodland Mall in Grand Rapids is offering higher seasonal pay over last year. Target stores are offering $12/hr to all seasonal staff—a dollar an hour more than last year. Amazon’s recent hike in minimum wage to $15/hr includes part-time, temporary and seasonal workers.

 

In addition to increased pay, employers are getting creative with incentives to attract seasonal help. JCPenney is offering seasonal employees paid time-off for the first time. Target started the work.win.give program which will award one hourly team member per store a $500 Target gift card and $500 to donate to the local community organization of their choice. Kohl’s associates can take advantage of extra discounts during friends and family weekends to get their holiday shopping done.

 

It’s easy to apply and interview

  • All Kohl’s locations offer walk-in interviews to candidates during business hours but recommend coming on a weekday when it is less busy.
  • Every Target store will be hosting seasonal hiring events Friday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 14 from 10am to 6pm.
  • JCPenney at Rivertown Mall in Grandville will host their annual National Hiring Day on Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 2 to 8pm.

Open the door to future employment

Seasonal work has the potential to turn into full-time regular employment for high-performing staff. Over the last three years 35% of people hired as seasonal UPS package handlers were given a permanent position after the holidays. “Seasonal hires will work through the end of the year,” explained a representative from Kohl’s, “with the potential to stay on pending performance and the store’s needs.”

You don’t always remember what they say, but you remember how they make you feel. The people we encounter throughout our day have the ability to improve our lives one interaction at a time.

 

In their various roles in service industry jobs Jen Joseph, Dave Janes and Chris Testillo interact with many people every day. They’re on their feet all day, working long hours, yet they serve their patients or customers with care, respect and a smile. Their service has been so impactful to others that they have been recognized for it!

 

These three outstanding employees are Essential Service Awards winners. Here is some of what their employers/customers have shared about them:

 

Jen Joseph, nurse aide, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, 2017 winner

For almost 30 years, Jen has worked tirelessly with our staff and patients to ensure the best care possible. She approaches every situation knowing exactly how to help or what to say. For example, there was a family whose mother was not making a lot of progress. The family was upset. Once Jen walked in, the patient lit up and the family’s mood shifted.

 

Dave Janes, post office clerk, US Postal Service, 2016 winner

Dave makes going to the post office a delightful experience. He provides true customer service to each individual waiting in line, regardless of their attitude. I’ve seen Dave diffuse tense situations with angry customers through humor. He genuinely cares about his customers and attempts to connect with each one personally.

 

Chris Testillo, CNA, Sunset Retirement Communities & Services, 2015 winner

Chris will pick up shifts on the schedule even when she doesn’t want to, to ensure her team is always staffed. She is often helping others once she knows her assigned residents are well taken care of. Our follow-up satisfaction surveys always mention Chris by name as someone who went ‘above and beyond’ for them for their stay.

One of the most frequently asked questions Michigan Works! agencies hear is, “What do I do when I become unemployed and how do I get unemployment?” There are multiple steps to take with different organizations to qualify for benefits. Here’s a break-down of who you will be working with and how to get started with the process.

  • File for Unemployment with the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA): UIA is a division of the state government that makes decisions on who receives benefits and how much they will receive. You can file a claim on their website: unemployment.state.mi.us/ or by phone: 1-866-500-0017, TTY: 1-866-366-0004. You must follow their reporting requirements to maintain your benefits.
  • Register for Work: To qualify for unemployment, you then need to register for work. You will register in person with Michigan Works! and online with Pure Michigan Talent Connect (PMTC). Both of these organizations are there to help you search for jobs and prepare for a new career. They do not make decisions on who will receive unemployment benefits.

Step 1:  You must visit a Michigan Works! service center, in person, to register.  While you are there, talk to a staff member and find out what services you qualify for. They provide a variety of assistance for eligible job seekers. Services can range from help getting reliable transportation to training scholarships.

 

Step 2: You also need to create a PMTC account and profile online. PMTC is an online portal where you can search for jobs and upload your resume so employers can find you. They also offer assessments and career information to help you find a job that fits your skills and interests. Be sure to update your PMTC profile at least once every 30 days. This ensures your information will continue to be seen by employers.

 

West Michigan Works! has an online wizard for job seekers to help you create a check list to follow when you become unemployed. Employment Expertise: Get started on a career in IT without a degree. Here’s how!

Technology is used in nearly every industry today; it’s no longer just tech companies that need IT employees. The demand for skilled IT workers is greater than the number of individuals with four-year, computer science degrees. Employers are looking to other providers of training and certification to find qualified talent to fill their IT job openings.

 

If you have the desire to work in the IT field, there is probably a short-term, affordable program that can help you get your foot in the door. The following five training programs can prepare someone with no IT experience for an entry-level position in the field.

 

Grand Circus: Offering rigorous coding classes and career assistance coaching, Grand Circus’ 12-week coding boot camps prepare participants for entry-level, computer programming jobs. You can also try out a free Coding 101 workshop to see if a career in coding is right for you!

 

The Factory: This multi-purpose space in downtown Grand Rapids offers CoLearning, a 12-week program that combine courses and mentoring for small groups to learn key skills in technology, design and entrepreneurship. The coLearning program is ideal for people looking to learn a new skill to switch careers and/or prepare for a new job.

 

New Horizons: The world’s largest IT training company provides courses and certification in a variety of computer technologies, from Microsoft Office proficiency to cybersecurity certification. You can learn basic word processing on a computer, as well as more technical skills in areas like database management.

 

Goodwill: The organization known for its retail outlets also provides training and career services. Their Technology Certification Program offers courses for several certifications to prepare participants for an entry-level, IT position. Individuals with significant disabilities or who face other barriers to employment may be eligible for financial assistance.

 

Google: You can receive IT Support Professional Certification through a free, online program developed by Google. The curriculum will prepare participants for an entry-level role in IT support. The certificate can be completed in about 8 months with 8-10 hours of coursework per week. Enrollment is now open for the five-course program that starts July 2, 2018.

Employment Expertise: A New Future for Anna

Anna Trujillo was referred to West Michigan Works! after returning to Michigan from California in August 2017. Anna was worried about finding employment; she didn’t have a credential, interview clothing, transportation funds or a Michigan driver’s license and registration. She needed a way to support herself and her three children.

 

Anna was interested in a career in the health care field. Through West Michigan Works!, Anna received a scholarship to attend CNA (certified nurse aide) training, a high-demand occupation in West Michigan. Anna’s CNA training and exam as well as CPR and basic life support training were paid for. She also received support services including interview clothing and mileage reimbursement.

 

Anna excelled in all of her trainings and soon found employment with Thornapple Manor as a CNA. She is also attending Kellogg Community College, taking pre-requisite classes with hopes of starting the nursing program in January 2019. After she completes her first year of the program she will be eligible for a promotion as a licensed practical nurse. After her second year, promotion as a registered nurse.

 

“I fell into Michigan Works! at a time when my life was turning upside down. I had moved to Michigan with my three young children and no idea what I was going to do, except that I needed to find a job,” Anna said. “Michigan Works! didn’t help me find a job; they gave me the tools I needed to find a career. A career that I am passionate about, that I believe in and that is truly fulfilling. The employees built me up and gave me confidence in a dark time. I have a new future for myself and my children now.”

 

According to Anna’s Michigan Works! career coach, “You never know what life is going to throw at you and there are no guarantees. No matter what challenges come her way, Anna tackles them head on!”

Employment Expertise: How to Handle Gaps in Employment History

An employment gap is an extended period of unemployment on a resume. Employment gaps occur for many reasons: staying home to care for children or an ill family member; a lay off and extended job search; a medical condition.

 

Whatever the reason, a gap in your employment history can be a red flag to potential employers and can be uncomfortable to discuss. If you have a gap on your resume, you will most likely be asked about it in an interview. Here are a few tips on how to discuss this with a potential employer.

 

Prepare. Create a compelling answer. Your statement should highlight activities you engaged in during the gap that are relevant to the job you are applying for. Practice answering the question before the interview so you come across as calm and confident.

 

Don’t hide it. It can be tempting to change your resume format to try to cover up an employment gap. Most hiring managers will see right through that. Instead, explain the gap in your cover letter and offer to answer any questions a potential employer might have.

 

Be honest. Even if you were serving time in prison, be honest about how you spent your time. It is better to be up front about situations you aren’t proud of than to lie and have an employer learn about it later.

 

Stay positive. Focus on what you learned and how you grew during that time. How did you spend your time? If you volunteered or participated in training, include that in your resume or cover letter.

Your job search is more than browsing job postings daily. Learning how to present yourself to employers and building a network are also important job search activities.

 

Have a free hour? These four small tasks will make a big impact on your job search. Here’s your agenda for Job Search Power Hour:

  1. Update your LinkedIn profile (20 minutes) Recruiters use LinkedIn to search for candidates. Look over your profile for errors. Update job descriptions with action verbs. Upload a professional-looking photo. Send connection requests to people you know (make sure to include a personal note).
  2. Send an email to someone new (10 minutes) Is there someone in a job you’re interested in? What about someone you recently met at a networking event? Send them an email asking to discuss their job or company. Let them know how long you’d like to meet. Pick a location most convenient for them.
  3. Look for a networking event (15 minutes) The event might be part of an industry-specific group, like Home Builders Association of Greater Grand Rapids, or part of an industry-general group like Economic Club of Grand Rapids. Before you attend, decide your goal for the event. Is it to meet three new people, or is it to meet someone specific?
  4. Register for a workshop (15 minutes) Attend a free workshop to learn more about a specific computer program, practice interviewing or discover why LinkedIn is essential to your job search. Free workshops are provided at several organizations including West Michigan Works!, Career Transitions Center of West Michigan and Women’s Resource Center.

Employment Expertise: Five Tips for the Mature Job Seeker

Are you over 50 and back in the job market for the first time in years? Do you think your age will make it harder to find a new job?


It’s true; hiring managers can make generalizations about mature job seekers. They may worry that you are not up to speed with the latest technology. They might also assume you are overqualified and will demand a higher salary.


There are ways to overcome these barriers. Here are five tips to help you get back in the workforce:


  • Consider training to update your skills. Is there new technology used in your line of work? Would you like to break into a new field? Use this time to get the training you need to land your next job.
  • Refresh your resume. To prevent broadcasting your age, don’t include graduation dates or experience dating more than 10-15 years. Focus only on skills that relate to the job you are applying for.
  • Stay up-to-date with technology. You will need to be comfortable searching the web for jobs and applying online. A strong LinkedIn profile can show potential employers you are comfortable with technology.
  • Network. Connect with friends, former colleagues and supervisors first. Let them know you are looking for a new position and ask them for advice and referrals.
  • Highlight your strengths. Older employees can bring a high level of professionalism, strong problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence to a position. This can make you a valuable member of any team.

Employment Expertise: Earn a salary while learning skills to be a medical assistant

West Michigan Works! is now accepting applications of interest for its Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship program. The one-year program will begin in January 2018.


Hospitals, doctor offices, nursing homes and urgent care clinics across West Michigan are in critical need of medical assistants. A medical assistant is essential to the care of patients and is a great way to begin a healthcare career.


Typical duties

Clinical activities may include:

  • taking and recording vital signs and medical histories,
  • preparing patients for exams,
  • drawing blood and
  • administering medications.

Administrative activities may include:

  • medical records,
  • billing and
  • coding information for insurance purposes.

As a student in a US Department of Labor-registered apprenticeship program:

  • You’ll graduate with a national, industry-recognized credential.
  • You’ll immediately apply what you learn in a clinical setting.
  • You’ll earn a salary while learning the skills to be successful in a high-demand career.

Many students graduate with a full-time job, with little or no debt.

Employment Expertise: The Résumé — Make a first impression they won’t forget

Recruiters and hiring managers can receive hundreds of résumés for a single job opening. They take 10 to 15 seconds on average to scan each resume. With this kind of competition, how do you make your résumé stand out?


To get noticed, your resume must:

  • Quickly create interest for the reader
  • Entice the reader/potential employer into wanting to know more about you
  • Speak to the needs of the employer

How do you do this? Here are five tips to get you started!

  • Make it relevant. Include only the experience, training and skills that are related to the job you are applying for. Employers want to know what you can do for them.
  • Be honest. Don’t exaggerate your qualifications. You need to be able to back up any statements you make.
  • Keep it professional. Don’t include personal information or hobbies. Use a professional font that is easy to read. If you don’t have a business-like email address, create a new one. Keep it simple and use your name, if possible. Example: J.Smith@gmail.com not DogLuvr100@gmail.com
  • Make it easy on the eyes. Keep some white space and use a font size above 10 point so it is easy to read. Keep it uniform, using the same bullet points and structure throughout.
  • Proofread. Check spelling, punctuation and grammar. Then have someone else check it for you. Don’t let a typo ruin your chances of getting an interview!

Employment Expertise: Use the STAR method to shine during interviews

There are many different kinds of job interviews, from traditional one-on-one interviews to informal group interviews. Employers often use the competency-based, or behavioral interview. If you’re searching for a job, it’s a good idea for prepare for this type of interview.
Employers use the behavioral interview to learn more about your qualifications based on past behavior.  The questions tend to start with “Tell me about a time when…”  If you’re nervous or unprepared, you may ramble on, forgot important details or be at a loss for words.


Fortunately, there is a simple way to help you answer these types of questions—the STAR method.


First, think of an example that highlights the quality that the interviewer is looking for, such as excellent customer service or problem-solving skills. It can be from an internship, school activity or project, community service, hobby or work experience. Then answer the question using the following four steps:


Situation: Set the scene. “A customer called complaining about…”


Task:  What did you need to do? What was your responsibility in this situation? Highlight any challenges, such as deadlines, costs, etc. “I needed to address the customer’s complaint quickly and respectfully.”


Activity:  What did you actually do? Keep the focus on you, even if the example involves a team. “I apologized, asked them to explain the problem and reported the details to my supervisor.”


Result:  How did the situation end? “The customer posted a positive comment on our Facebook page and continued to order from us.”


To prepare for your next interview, think of five or six examples and tell the story using the STAR method. Remember to keep them short (one to three minutes), use numbers whenever possible to show results and end with a statement that highlights your ability. For example, “I’d never talked to such an angry customer before, but by staying calm, I was able to resolve the problem and the customer left happy.”

Peters, Stabenow, announce $4.6 million to expand Head Start programs for West Michigan children

U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow recently announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded $1.95 million to the Grand Rapids Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative to support their Early Head Start Child Care Partnership program, and $2.7 million to the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District to support Early Head Start and Head Start programs for children.

“Head Start and Early Head Start programs provide vital educational and support services to families and children that put them on the path to success,” said Senator Peters. “I’m pleased to help announce this funding that will help expand access to critical medical, nutritional and educational support services for children in West Michigan so they can lead healthy and happy lives.”

“Today’s announcement is good news and will help children in West Michigan get the long-term support they need,” said Senator Stabenow. “Good nutrition, medical care and early childhood education can make all the difference in helping our children succeed.”

Head Start and Early Head Start prepare children and their families for school by offering a variety of services including early learning experiences, family support services and health services. Early Head Start Child Care Partnership programs offer developmental screenings and referrals to medical, dental, nutrition, vision and mental health services, and provide necessities including diapers and formula. Partnership sites receive additional resources to support training and professional development for staff, and improve facilities and upgrade supplies and equipment.

Peters joins colleagues in opposition of proposed EPA cuts

Cuts would eliminate funding to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and impact EPA’s ability to help Flint

U.S. Senator Gary Peters joined a group of 37 Senators in opposing President Trump’s proposal to inflict a more than 30-percent cut to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) budget that would have a direct effect on Michigan and the Great Lakes. Included in the budget proposal is a complete elimination of funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), which addresses the most serious risks to the Great Lakes ecosystem and supports long-term cleanup goals. The proposed cuts would also significantly hinder the agency’s ability to provide vital technical expertise to the City of Flint as they work to recover from the water crisis and safely transition water sources.

Sen. Peters & colleagues reintroduce bipartisan, bicameral legislation to make college more affordable & accessible

U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), John Boozman (R-AR) and Al Franken (D-MN), and U.S. Representatives Jared Polis (D-CO) and Tom Reed (R-NY) have announced they are reintroducing bipartisan, bicameral legislation to help make college more affordable and accessible by expanding opportunities for high school students to earn college credit. The Making Education Affordable and Accessible Act (MEAA) would improve access to higher education by providing grants to eligible institutions of higher learning to create dual and concurrent enrollment and early/middle college programs that allow high school students to earn college credits before their high school graduation.

“Some form of higher education or technical certification is increasingly essential to joining today’s workforce, and the rising cost of tuition should not be a barrier that keeps students from getting the skills and education they need to succeed,” said Senator Peters.

“I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation that helps students save money while getting a head start on their college education. The Making Education Affordable and Accessible Act will help ensure students are well-prepared for their chosen careers and employers have trained workers to fill the jobs of the future.”

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) has released a video message urging people in Michigan to join her and stand up to protect critical funding for the Great Lakes. The bipartisan Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which Senator Stabenow helped launched in 2010, provides vital resources to protect and restore the Great Lakes. The program faces elimination in President Trump’s budget proposal.

Senator Stabenow announces bipartisan legislation to support U.S. manufacturers, create more American jobs

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today announced legislation amending our tax laws to support American manufacturers and to create jobs here at home. The bill makes it clear that both companies using contract manufacturers and the contract manufacturers themselves are eligible to claim tax deductions that reward domestic manufacturing activities in the United States. U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) also introduced the legislation.

“We don’t have an economy or a middle class unless we make things and grow things,” said Senator Stabenow. “This bill makes a commonsense change to our tax policies that will encourage manufacturers to create more jobs here at home.”

Section 199 is one of the largest tax incentives that benefits domestic manufacturing. It provides companies with a 9% deduction on their income from domestic manufacturing activities, giving those activities a lower effective tax rate and making U.S. manufacturing a more attractive investment.

Under current tax law, it is unclear whether a company using a contract manufacturer or the contract manufacturer itself is eligible to claim the deduction. Senator Stabenow’s legislation would clarify tax law to allow both entities to claim the Section 199 tax incentive for domestic manufacturing.

Huizenga examines impact of financial regulation on small business job creation

On March 22, Capital Markets Subcommittee Chairman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) held a hearing to examine how the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has implemented the JOBS Act and what its impact has been on capital formation and job creation. During the hearing Huizenga called for the SEC to stop pursing political objectives outside its core mission and focus on creating a regulatory environment that supports innovation and job creation.

Key Takeaways from the Hearing:

  • The bipartisan JOBS Act is working, but Congress and the SEC must do more to help small businesses, entrepreneurs and emerging growth companies access capital.
  • The SEC has a responsibility to facilitate, not frustrate, capital formation and must work with Congress to eliminate unnecessary and overly burdensome regulations that are restricting access to capital.
  • The Financial CHOICE Act, the Republican plan to replace the Dodd-Frank Act, included numerous provisions to expand access to capital for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Congressman Bill Huizenga’s Listening Tour is March 6 in Grand Haven

Congressman Bill Huizenga announced that the second stop on his listening tour will take place on Monday, March 6th in Grand Haven. The town hall style listening session will be held in the auditorium of Lakeshore Middle School and begin at 7 pm. This event is open to all residents of Michigan’s Second Congressional District. Congressman Huizenga’s first listening tour stop took place in Baldwin on February 25th and was attended by over 300 people.


The State and Local Cyber Protection Act

U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and David Perdue (R-GA) have introduced bipartisan legislation to help state and local governments combat cyber threats by increasing coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The State and Local Cyber Protection Act requires DHS’s National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) to provide assistance and training for state, local and tribal governments in preventing, preparing for and responding to cyber threats.

According to the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO), state governments have identified improving cybersecurity as a top information technology priority. However, state and local governments often lack the resources or technical expertise to defend their networks from cyberattacks. Analysis from the Brookings Institute found that state and local governments vary widely in their abilities to budget sufficient resources and field the technical expertise necessary to respond to increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. The State of Michigan estimates that they detect over 600,000 attempted intrusions to their information systems every day.

“This bipartisan legislation will help ensure every level of government has the necessary tools to protect their networks and respond to cyber attacks,” said Sen. Peters.


Self-driving vehicles

U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow and U.S. Representatives Fred Upton and Debbie Dingell called on the Trump Administration to prioritize the development and testing of connected and self-driving vehicles in the President’s proposed budget for 2018. The Members of Congress sent a letter to Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Mick Mulvaney and Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Elaine Chao urging them to include $200 million in their 2018 federal budget request for facilities designated by DOT as proving grounds for automated vehicle testing. In January, DOT designated ten sites across the country as national proving grounds, including the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti.

The letter calls for federal funding to help support the development of automated vehicle proving grounds and promote safe testing to validate these self-driving technologies and ensure they are ready for use on American roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 35,000 people are killed on our roads and highways annually. Connected and self-driving vehicle technologies have the potential to reduce accidents and save thousands of lives.

Preparing youth and adults for high-skill, high-demand jobs

U.S. Senator Gary Peters has joined the Senate Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, a bipartisan caucus focused on improving and strengthening access to career and technical education. CTE programs help prepare youth and adults for high-skill, high-demand jobs in fields ranging from health care, advanced manufacturing, hospitality, information technology, marketing and sales, public safety and more. Each year, over 100,000 Michigan students enroll in CTE programs across 16 different career pathways.

“In an increasingly dynamic economy, we must invest in education and workforce development to equip workers with skills they need to compete in the 21st century,” said Senator Peters. “Career and technical education helps prepare America’s workforce for the jobs of the future in high-demand, good-paying career fields. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the Senate Career and Technical Education Caucus to continue supporting CTE programs.”

More and more HR professionals are using the Internet to find information about job candidates. In a recent poll of recruiters, 93% said that they look at a candidate’s social profile and 42% of those said that they’ve reconsidered a candidate based on what they found.

 

Knowing this, how can you create a good online first impression? Here are a couple tips to get you started.

 

Google yourself. Look at the first three or four pages to see what an employer will see. A search that brings up negative or inappropriate content could land you in an employer’s reject pile. And while having negative content online may hurt your chances of landing a job, having no information is almost as bad; recruiters may see this being out of touch or lacking skills.

 

To combat this, you need to get fresh, positive content on the Internet. A good way to do this is to create or update your LinkedIn profile.

 

LinkedIn is the #1 social media site that employers and recruiters use to search for candidates, so it’s important to have a complete profile with detailed information about your skills and experience. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Photo: Your profile is 11 times more likely to be viewed if you include a photo of yourself. Be sure to use a professional-looking photo.
  • Headline: Your headline is the short description of you that follows your photo in LinkedIn. A strong headline uses key words that are relevant to the position that you’re searching for and makes people want to view your profile. This is your opportunity to sell yourself in 120 words or less. Be concise. Be creative.
  • Network: Once you set up your profile, connect with everyone you know: current and former colleagues, past employers, people in your industry, neighbors, family, friends and former classmates. And don’t forgot to follow companies that you may be interested in.

Building your online presence takes time, but these steps are a good start. Once you get some positive content on the web, remember to monitor it on a regular basis.

Changing careers? Here’s how to find a job that’s right for you

Did you know that the average person will change careers five to seven times in a lifetime? Not just a new job, but a completely new field. For example, leaving a marketing position for accounting or moving from manufacturing to retail.

 

Why do workers change careers so often? Sometimes it has to do with frustration in a current job. Other times, a business closure or downsizing forces a move. A lifestyle change can leave workers needing more time at home or a larger salary. As workers mature, they better understand their talents and interests.

 

Whatever the reason, multiple career changes is the norm in today’s workforce. So, how can you do it successfully?

 

Understand yourself. Take time for self-reflection. What are your passions, strengths and weaknesses? Not sure where to begin? Consider taking a personality test, like the Myers-Briggs Personality Assessment, to get started.

 

Find the right fit. Once you understand your skills and personal preferences, start exploring your options. There are many good career exploration sites online like Pure Michigan Talent Connect. Their Career Explorer page has tools that match your interests and skills with the best career for you.

 

Prepare. Research the position you want to transition into. Are your current skills transferable? Do you need additional training or education? Consider volunteering in the field. You can gain knowledge and make connections.

 

Network.  Speaking of connections, do you know anyone who is already working in the field? Would they be willing to provide a reference, or do they know of current job openings? Join a professional network in the field and attend local networking events. Prepare a strong elevator speech to let your new connections know why you want a new career.

After the interviewer asks you a couple questions to get to know you a little better (see our first article for tips), they might move to questions about why you are a good fit for the job.

 

Here are a few common questions and strong answers to help you prepare for your next interview:

  • Why should we hire you?
    • Be concise and confident.
    • Focus on telling them why your experience will benefit their organization.
    • Avoid talking about what you’ll get out of the job.
    • Tell them what you will do in the first 30, 60 or 90 days.
  • Why do you want this job?
    • Be specific. What are the aspects of the job that excite you?
    • Do your research. What is it about their company that makes you want to work for them over their competitors?
  • How do you handle stress and pressure?
    • Give an example of a professional situation when you handled the stress well.
    • Don’t tell them you never feel stressed. Everyone does!
    • Talk about ways you manage stress or pressure. Ex: to-do lists, going on a walk at lunch, morning meetings with your team.

Michigan employers and job-seekers can connect through a state-sponsored virtual career fair on Wednesday, August 10 from 10 am to 4 pmPure Michigan Talent Connect’s MiVirtualCareerFairs brings together Michigan employers and talent from across the state and the globe in an online, virtual event.

 

Since 2012 more than 318 employers and 38,254 job seekers have been connected through the state’s 19 sponsored events.

 

For this month’s MiVirtualCareerFair, 38 Michigan employers in varying industries will be highlighted and featured. There’s no cost for job seekers to participate.

 

Registration information can be found at www.mitalent.org/virtualcareerfair. During virtual events, job-seekers can explore employer booths, interact one-on-one with participating employers and search and apply for job opportunities. In addition, job-seekers can access information about career development programs and resources in the event Media Center and Resource Lounge.

Hearthside Aims to Expand Job Market in Kentwood

hearthsdeThe nation’s largest privately-held baking company is planning on adding to the local job market thanks in part to a grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.

Hearthside Food Solutions, LLC, est. 2009, specializing in grain-based foods and snacks, announced that due to the generous grant, the company would be able to add as well as train 66 positions to their 3225 32nd Street baking line location. The grant came in order to offset higher energy and operating costs in Michigan, compared to a site they considered in Kentucky.

Based out of Illinois, Hearthside currently employs over 1700 full-time employees in West Michigan, operating four plants, including the 32nd Street location, as well as one on Shaffer Avenue, one on 44th Street, and one on Oak Industrial Drive, off of Michigan St NE. The specific baking line location on 32nd Street was the former Meridian Auto Systems plant before said company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005.
