Hula hoop fun featured at the KDL Kentwood branch, other KDL summer activities

Audacious Hoops performs July 24 at the KDL Kentwood Branch.

While many believe that the hula hoop was invented in the 1950s, it’s origins date back thousands of years. In fact, in the 14thCentury, doctors reported treated patients suffering from pain, dislocated backs, and even heart failure due to “hooping.”

Today, “hooping” as it is now referred to, has become its own art form and perhaps no one has done more for it than Grand Rapids’ own Audria Larsen, the founder of Audacious Hoops.

Area residents will get the chance to see Audacious Hoops in action on July 24 at 10 a.m. at the KDL Kentwood Branch, 4950 Breton SE. The performance is part of the summer programs at the KDL.

Other upcoming programs include the teen program Candy Sushi Creations on July 26 at 2 p.m. at the KDL Caledonia Branch, 6260 92nd St. SE, and the adult program Knit One, Cast Off, on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the KDL Byron Township Branch, 8191 Byron Center Ave. SW.
