Shortly after midnight on June 23, the Wyoming Fire Department responded to a reported house fire near the 1000 block of Rathbone St. SW with possible occupants still inside the home.
The first fire units that arrived observed fire and smoke coming from a window near the side of the house. All occupants were quickly accounted for soon after arrival. While the fire department was extinguishing the fire, patients were being cared for by Life EMS.
The Fire Department was notified of this house fire due to the quick actions of a mother and the early warning provided by working smoke alarms. These working smoke alarms helped save the lives of the two children and the mother within the house.
The working smoke alarms activated and alerted the mother to the fire while the family was sleeping. After hearing the alarms, the mother immediately woke up her two children and safely evacuated the home before conditions worsened.
This incident is a powerful reminder that working smoke alarms save lives. The smoke alarms provided the critical early warning needed for this mother to wake up, get her children to safety and call 911.
The Wyoming Fire Department encourages all residents to install smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each sleeping area. The Fire Department also recommends testing your smoke alarms monthly, developing and practicing a home fire escape plan, and to replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older. If you need smoke alarms for your home, please reach out to your
local Fire Department for assistance.
This fire is currently under investigation. Anyone with additional information regarding the fire is asked to contact the Wyoming Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office at 616-257-9764.
