Photo of the Week: The Road that Runs through

The area’s most famous road is 28th Street which runs through both the cities of Kentwood and Wyoming. This aerial view shows 28th Street heading east from the City of Wyoming. The Woodland Mall is located on the right about midway on the photo. The photo was probably taken in the early 1970s.

If you have have old photos of the cities of Wyoming and Kentwood, please contact historical commissions for either of those communities. For Kentwood, click here. For Wyoming, click here.

Photo of the Week: Still Standing

It was four years ago this week that Sears announced it would be closing its store at Woodland Mall. The two-story department store had been one of the original anchors when the the mall opened in 1967. The decision to construct Woodland Mall in then Paris Township was the catalyst for the residents to incorporate to become the City of Kentwood.

The Sear store closed in March and in the late summer of 2017, Woodland Mall began a $100 million upgrade project that included reconfiguring the former Sears location for the mall’s newest anchor store, Von Maur. (Photo provided by Woodland Mall.)

Photo of the Week: The Red Glasses Movement

The Red Glasses Movement at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (WKTV)

Have you noticed the large pair of red glasses in the window of the Grand Rapids Public Museum? They are part of the Red Glasses Movement which is in honor of 5-year-old Audrey Janderno, who passed away in January of 2018. Audrey was born with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect however, she never let these define her. She was known for her contagious smile and her bright red glasses. This fall the Grand Rapids Public Museum has teamed up with The Red Glasses Movement in celebration with Sean Kenney’s Wild Connections made with LEGO® Bricks which opens Nov. 7. In partnership with The Red Glasses Movement, the museum has designed a scavenger hunt to find red glasses through out the museum. The scavenger hunt begins on Nov. 7. Photo is by Anna Johns.

Photo of the Week: The Little White Church on the Corner

(WKTV)

This week’s photo comes from the Wyoming Historical Commission. The photo is of the former South Wyoming United Methodist Church that once stood on the southwest corner of 54th Street and Byron Center Avenue. The property was sold some years ago so that the CVS store — that is currently on the property — could be built.

Photo of the Week: Sign of the Times

This photo was taken at Kentwood’s Pinewood Park and sent in by Kentwood Resident Gerald DeMaagd. DeMaagd took the photo shortly after the state’s announcement that to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, the play equipment and other communal items such as picnic tables in all parks would be closed to the general public.

Photo of the Week: Thanks for Serving

This week’s photo was sent to us from Dégagé Ministries and features Heartside resident Thomas Carpenter receiving his pin from Dégagé’s Executive Director Marge Palmerlee. Dégagé Ministries held a Veterans Day luncheon on Monday, Nov. 11, to recognize homeless and marginalized veterans from the Heartside neighborhood. The event was hosted by Denny Gillem, LTC, US Army (Ret.) and host of the radio program Frontlines of Freedom. The music was provided by the Catholic Central High School Choir. Employees from SpartanNash, Blue Cross Blue Shield and students from Northpointe Christian Schools volunteered at the event. The veterans were served lunch, received gifts and were recognized in a pinning ceremony.

Photo of the Week: The Mighty Mac

This beautiful photo of the Mackinaw Bridge comes from local voice actor, sound designer and photographer Chris Slonske. According to legend, if you stand under the bridge you have one foot in Lake Huron and one foot in Lake Michigan, which might be true as you are standing in the Straits of Mackinaw.

Slonske has been living in Grand Rapids since 1990. He works for an office supply distribution company during the day and does voiceover work on the side. He just started getting into photography about year and half ago. He loves to photography landscapes but also would like to venture into portrait photography.
