The City of Kentwood will host one last hurrah to summer as it brings in more than 30 food trucks for its second annual End of Summer Food Truck Festival.

Set for Saturday, Sept. 16, the event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lots of the KDL Kentwood (Richard l. Root) Branch, 4650 Breton Rd. SE, and the Kentwood City Hall, 4900 Breton Rd. SE.

The event is definitely bigger than last year, said Kentwood Parks and Recreation Marketing and Events Coordinator Laura Barbrick. This is partly due to a partnership with GR Loves Food Trucks which helped to bring trucks from all over West Michigan and even a few that are based further away. Barbrick noted there is even a truck coming that will be selling Lularoe clothing.

“The popularity of food trucks continues to grow in West Michigan,” said GR Loves Food Trucks President Alan Stone. “Our partnership with Kentwood is about bringing the community together for something everyone enjoys ‘eating delicious food.’”

Blue Spoon also will be at his year’s End of Summer Food Truck Festival.

Barbrick agreed with Stone about the growing popularity of food trucks which is part of the reason the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department decided last year to host the End of Summer Food Truck Festival. Because both the food trucks and Parks and Recreation Department have such busy summer schedule, it was decided to have the event in the fall, she said.

“With food trucks ranging from barbecue to seafood to desserts, we’re confident everyone will find something they like,” Barbrick said.

Also new this year, according to Barbrick, is a beer tent which will serve a variety of beer and cider along with selections from Railtown Brewing Company. The beer tent will open at 11 a.m.

Local live music will be featured onstage throughout the day with bands Jesse Ray and the Carolina Catfish, Elroy Meltzer, Blue Nan & the Household featuring Stan Greene, and Kari Lynch. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. There also will be cornhole tournament open to teams of two from noon to 4 p.m. To register, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 616-656-5270.

Celebrating all things local at the LocalFirst Street Party

Local music, local food, and of course local beer, will once again be part of the annual LocalFirst Street Party set for June 3.

The 14th annual LocalFirst Street Party will run from 3 p.m. – midnight in the parking lot near Bistro Bella Vita, 44 Grandville Ave. SW, in downtown Grand Rapids.

“The Local First Street Party celebrates the vibrant and diverse local talent we have in Michigan,” said LocalFirst President Elissa Hillary. “From the music and performers to the food and beverage, it’s all evidence that the work we do is supporting and bringing together a strong community.”

New to this year’s event is an expanded kids area with the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum and Sanctuary Folk Art providing programming. Also the Happy Henna will be providing Henna tattoos and there will be an interactive photo booth by Smitten Booth.

Of course, if you are crafty, there will be lots of sidewalk chalk available to decorate the streets. Also returning to this year’s event with activities for everyone are 61Syx Technique Street Dance Academy, Audacious Hoops, and AM Yoga.

If you are looking to bust a groove, local groups such as The Crane Wives, Molly Bouwsma-Schultz & Friends, Cabildo, Convotronics, JRob & Bedrock: The Foundation, Hollywood Makeout, and Wealthy & Diamond will be providing the music to do just that.

Of course food is always on the mind whenever attending the LocalFirst Street Party and there will be plenty of it from a number of local restaurants and food trucks. This year’s line up includes A Moveable Feast, Love’s Ice Cream, Daddy Pete’s BBQ, The Maine Dish, Patty Matters, What the Truck, Twisted Rooster, Grand Rapids Pizza and Delivery, The Candied Yam and Malamiah Juice Bar.

And of course, you have to have something to wash it all down with and local favorites as Founders, Brewery Vivant, Mitten Brewing Company, Farmhaus, and Cider Company will all be on hand providing a range of local beverages to choose from. There also will be free water from Gordon Water.

“We are so grateful for all the support we receive of over 50 sponsors and community partners,” Hillary said. “The Street Party is one of the biggest ways we have to show off what local ownership and collaboration means for West Michigan.”

Because of the positive feedback to having food trucks at its summer concert series and Fourth of July event, the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department has decided to host a Cornhole Tournament and Food Truck Rally Saturday, Oct. 15.

“Since the food trucks and the Parks and Recreation Department had such a busy summer schedule, we decided to plan something for the Fall instead,” said Parks and Recreation Marketing and Events Coordinator Laura Barbrick. “We thought it might be fun to have another activity to draw an audience, so we came up with a combination Cornhole Tournament and Food Truck Rally.”

The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Kentwood City Hall Lawn, 4900 Breton Ave. SE. Live music will be provided by Just Cuz and Barbrick noted that just like the concert series, guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine to the event.

Seven area food trucks have signed up for the event so far. Those trucks are:

Big Baby’s Bar-B-Que: Just as the name implies, this truck offers barbecue: chicken, spare ribs, rib tips and Big Baby’s Gourmet sausages along with baked beans, cole slaw and potato salad. Full rack of ribs is $23 with prices going down from there.

Blue Spoon Catering: Operated by Goodwill, this food truck offers a wide variety of menu options from a classic Tex-Mex to its signature “Kabob Bash” menu. There is also unique side dishes such as vegan black bean hash, tomato bruschetta, and the truck’s signature spinach and artichoke dip. Menu option prices range from $3 to $9. Special dietary options are also available.

Gettin’ Fresh: This truck features a bacon burger and beer brats from Bob’s Butcher Block in Jenison. Bob mixes the bacon right into the ground beef. Also availabe are turkey pesto panini and Italian beef panini along with Nantucket breads, an assortment of salads, a variety of snacks such as the Nantucket Soft German-Style Pretzel and assorted desserts.

Patty Matters: This truck offers a variety of gourmet burgers such as the Señorita Cha Cha with a chorizo patty, cheddar cheese, chipotle aioli and back bean salsa wrapped in a tortilla and grilled along with traditional burgers such as the All American classic a burger with American cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. Also available are variety of sides such as sweet potato fries and potato bombs and deserts such as salted caramel pretzel bars.

Rix Stix Pronto Pups:This truck offers Pronto Pups, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and French fries for $3 to $5.50. Combos that include chips and drink are $8 and $9. Also available are deep fried Twinkies (two for $5) and deep fried Oreos (six for $5).

River City Cup & Cake: We’ll call this the desert truck as it offers a variety of sweet treats such as cookies, brownies, Danishes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants, and an apple frangipane tort. Also available is a variety of coffees, teas, hibiscus and hopps sodas. Note, nothing at this truck is more than $4.

Two Scotts Barbecue: This truck offers pulled pork, sliced brisket, pulled chicken, burnt ends and sausage in both “Just Meats” and sandwich offerings. There is also St. Louis ribs and jumbo wings. A Scott #3 Combo features three meat choices, two sides, bread, pickles and a drink for $16. Sides range from pimento mac and cheese to cheddar biscuit and homemade tots. And of course there are plenty of sweet treats.

The event is free and open to the public. There is a $20 fee per team (of two players) to participate in the Cornhole Tournament.
