For many people, fishing is a common hobby during Labor Day Weekend. The Grand River is a perfect site for fishing and more recently popular: magnet fishing. Using strong magnets, you can lure metallic treasures that were lost along the bottom of large bodies of water. Just make sure to do so carefully and turn in any dangerous or suspicious items to your local police.

Looking for some new music to listen to during your Labor Day weekend travels? Grand Rapids-based For the Universe releases its self-title record at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. The heavy metal band’s new record will be available to download and stream through the Bandcamp app.

Celebration Cinema is hosting Sunset Cinema at Studio Park throughout the month of September. This Friday, Sept. 4 through Wednesday, Sept. 9, the film “Arrival” will be featured. When mysterious spacecraft land across the globe, expert translator Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is sent to decipher their intent. This month we celebrate three chocolate holidays: Sept. 12 is National Chocolate Milkshake Day, Sept. 13 is International Chocolate Day, and Sept. 22 is White Chocolate Day, which really isn’t chocolate, but hey, we’re fine with that. Every year, the first Monday of September is designated as Labor Day: a celebration of the achievements of our nation’s workforce. Labor Day Events
Kick off your Labor Day in Holland at the Annual Labor Day Boardwalk and Pancake Breakfast on Monday, Sept. 3rd. The patriotic four-mile walk winds through Kollen Park and ends at beautiful Windmill Island Gardens where a delicious and scenic pancake breakfast will be held. Afterward, bring the family to the annual Truck Parade downtown! Big rigs that carry locally-made products rumble through downtown Holland and Zeeland, complete their route by parking at the Holland Civic Center, where free food and prizes are all part of the end-of-parade celebration.
The city of Muskegon has some great events planned around Labor Day that you should not miss. On Monday, Sept. 3rd, the city kicks off the holiday with their annual Labor Day parade, followed by a celebration filled with food vendors, bounce houses, prizes, and more. The 12th Annual Labor Day Community Walk in nearby Whitehall lets your family explore the White River Bridge and scenic nearby trails.
