Seventy-five years! Whether you want to sing Happy Birthday or just wish them a wonderful anniversary celebration— know this: 

“The Grand Rapids Chorus is one of the longest running female barbershop singing organizations in the world,” said Pattee Bender, Kentwood resident and longtime member of the group. 

Barbershop is four-part harmony a cappella singing.
 

Of course, the milestone of being in existence for 75 years deserves notoriety and recognition. And, of course, a gala. 

“We are so excited about our 75th Diamond Jubilee Gala,” said Colleen Pierson, a 10-year member.  

The event takes place at 3 p.m. on September 19 at DeVos Center for Arts and Worship.

Master Director Holli Houtz doesn’t want to give too much away on the content of the show, but she promises, “Lots of memorable moments throughout with former members and directors taking the stage, a new musical arrangement and memories of the 75 years. There also will be a very special quartet called Duly Noted that will travel to West Michigan to perform.”

Members from age 19 to 92

The Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines has performed all over the world with recent excursions to Ireland and Pearl Harbor. They currently have members from all across Michigan ranging in age from 19 to 92.   

“We are always looking for new members,” Houtz explained. “You don’t have to be able to read music, just the ability to sing.  Music, performing and singing come from the heart.”
