West Michigan offers a wide variety of ways to celebrate, whether it’s stopping by a cider mill, attending a special harvest dinner, or heading out to the local fall festival. However you like to get into the feeling of fall, West Michigan has you covered.

Fenn Valley Vineyards believes that wine should be approachable, and their tours have been designed to help take the mystery out of making world class wine. Fenn Valley is offering fall vineyard tours on Saturdays and Sundays through October 18th. They aim to strike a balance between education and entertainment. Luckily, the subject matter always keeps things interesting! Their tours are pretty in-depth. They run about 1:45 in length, and involve wine tasting throughout to illustrate the various points being made.

In the fall, the tours go into the vineyard where the emphasis is on how wine grapes are grown and the kinds of operations that Fenn Valley performs to grow their premium grapes. Reservations required and accepted on the Fenn Valley website.

fenn-valley-featureThis fall South Haven has a variety of events to offer for young, and slightly mature audiences. South Haven boasts a 20-acre Corn Maze; a lot of creative energy goes into this project every year to make it the best corn maze anywhere! The corn maze is open through October 30th, from 10am-6pm on weekdays and from 12pm-6pm on weekends.

September is apple time at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm in Eau Claire Michigan. Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm has over 250 different varieties of apples on their farm, and many of the heritage varieties date back to the 1700s. The market is open to the public Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays after Labor Day from 10am to 6pm. Plan to stop by for some free apple tasting! You can sample all of their varieties on hand, and then go to the orchard and pick your own fruit. Enjoy one of their cherry waffle boats, apple pie squares, taffy apples, or hot apple cider, or bring your own picnic to enjoy in the family picnic area with playground.

St. Joseph is a must-stop if you’re looking for fall fun in West Michigan! Kick things off with a visit to the Farmers Market in Lake Bluff Park, and then head downtown on September 25th and 26th for their Fall Festival! Apples are the largest and most valuable fruit crop in Michigan, and with apples, come donuts and cider. “This flavor starts off with apple cider flavored ice cream, with a spiced-apple swirl throughout and real donut pieces,” says Ray Sierengowski, director of product development for Hudsonville Ice Cream. “All the flavors of your local cider mill are delivered to you in one delicious scoop. You’ll FALL for this tried-and-true combination.”

Downtown Market 1Look for Cider Mill Donut and other “Limited Edition” flavors—distinguished by the red packaging—in grocery stores throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois from mid-September through early November (while supplies last).

This family cooking class is titled “Bushels of Apples,” and will focus on this classic fall snack. What better way to welcome fall than by spending some quality time in the great outdoors. Nothing beats a float trip in a drift boat during the Salmon run on the Pere Marquette River in the Fall. The Fall colors and watching the Salmon spawn are something you can’t find anywhere else, whether you like to fish or not. If you do like to fish, it’s the best time of the year to wet a line.

There are few fish that live up to their name, but the King Salmon in the Pere Marquette River certainly do! Red Moose Lodge is located right off the river, and is the perfect place for a fall weekend fishing trip, whether you’re simply looking for a place to stay, or want to book a guided fishing trip down the river.

Time is Running Out on Pinery Park Little League

By: Mike DeWitt

It’s every little leaguer’s dream, that perfect game-ending situation that runs through a ballplayer’s mind: At the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, the bases are loaded with your team down a score. Three balls and two strikes, a full count and it’s do or die.

There’s nowhere to hide. It’s just you at the plate. A chance to be the hero.

For Pinery Park Little League (PPLL), the game is winding down and it’s time for the league to step up to the plate so that its contract with the City of Wyoming and Pinery Park isn’t terminated.

After 60 years of organizing youth baseball here in Wyoming, the PPLL is in jeopardy of losing its home.

PineryParkThe problems started back in 2011 when the PPLL lost its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status with the IRS due to a lack of transparent bookkeeping and financial information. Since the loss of 501(c)(3) status, the City of Wyoming has asked the PPLL to take the necessary steps to get the nonprofit title back with the IRS.

Four years later that still has not been accomplished. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for an organization that has proven to be run very inefficiently.

Electrical and maintenance bills haven’t been paid on time. Board meeting dates are flimsy with sometimes only a couple of days’ notice before a meeting. Board election positions are posted with the minimal amount of notice (two weeks) mandated by the league’s bylaws. Umpires are paid in cash out of the concession stand register with no paper trail to follow. And the League has been unable to present their financials at the request of the Wyoming City Council.

“This league is extremely, extremely unorganized,” exclaimed Mayor Jack Poll in a heat of passion and disappointment at the City Council Meeting on September 14. “And, if they can’t have the leadership to run this league on our fields with the requirements that we have, then it’s time to change direction.”

The Wyoming City Council had a very long discussion about what to do with the PPLL and whether or not the contract should be terminated. By the end of the meeting, they decided on a few next steps:

  • The PPLL must turn over all financials, bank statements and loose pieces of paper
  • The PPLL lawyer and the City lawyer will draw up a new contract that has some teeth
  • The new contract will designate the Community Resource Alliance as the fiduciary for the finances of the PPLL
  • The PPLL will form a separate committee to field complaints from league participants

The new contract must be submitted by September 30 so that it can be placed on the October 5 meeting’s agenda. If no agreement is reached, the contract will be terminated on October 5, and the Parks and Rec Department will charter youth baseball.

ArtPrize Releases Mobile App for its Seventh Edition

ArtPrize SevenArtPrize, the radically open international art competition decided by public vote and expert jury, today launched the ArtPrize Seven mobile app, developed in partnership with Atomic Object for both iOS and Android. Combined with a streamlined and newly updated website, the ArtPrize suite of technology-based audience engagement tools will deliver a seamless user experience, with the voting module as its centerpiece. The ArtPrize Seven mobile app is now available for download via the Apple and Google Play stores, allowing visitors to begin planning their experience for the 19-day event.

The intersection of art and technology is central to the way that ArtPrize was founded and continues to run to this day, powering the public vote and the artist-venue connections process, as well as influencing the way that artists make and share their work. Since the close of the 2014 event, ArtPrize has worked to refine both the mobile app and website, ushering in a sleeker, leaner design and surfacing the most sought-after content, features and functionality on both platforms.

ArtPrize APPArtPrize APP2“This year we really focused on presenting our app and website users with a more streamlined experience, not only in terms of aesthetics but in functionality,” noted Jonathan Hunsberger, ArtPrize Director of Technology. “Our hope is that these tools will become a focal point for visitors throughout the event, enhancing and informing their ArtPrize journey.”

The popular List feature returns to the ArtPrize mobile app and artprize.org, allowing everyone to browse the 1,550 artist entries competing in ArtPrize Seven and create unlimited lists of the artwork that they most want to see. Lists are easily shared via social media, text message and email, and ArtPrize-goers can browse and follow Lists that have been made available to the public. The mobile app easily generates detailed walking directions between venues, encouraging visitors to explore more of the event and form their own experiences off the beaten path.

Also returning to the mobile app are the ArtPrize event and blog integrations, keeping visitors in the know about what’s happening around the event. The continuation of the interactive map feature at artprize.org and within the mobile app gives greater context to the location of venues, events, restaurants and brewpubs that are in their vicinity. The mobile app will be continuously updated throughout the 19-day event, providing users with real-time useful information to plan their visit.

And of course the public will cast their votes, and ultimately decide the winners of $250,000 in prizes, via the mobile app, at artprize.org, and by text message (SMS). Voters will be able to register while downtown via the mobile app, skipping the lines at designated voting sites — and then cast their votes either from within the event boundaries or wherever their day may lead them.

ArtPrize Seven will take place from September 23 to October 11, 2015 when three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan will become an open playing field where everyone can join the conversation about art, and where the public decides the winners’ circle.

Labor Day Salute

GM Plant exteriorThanks to Labor Day, over 500 employees at the General Motors Plant in Wyoming have the chance to be home with families today. Production Manager Rick Demuynck, says employees are a critical part of the GM worldwide success and more than deserve a special day off. “Labor Day recognizes the importance of family,” says Demuynck. “Our operations run regularly sometimes 6 days a week. Our folks spend a lot of time away from family, and that requires family sacrifices sometimes because it’s hard to be in two places in the same time. This is a chance to be with families.” GMCH GR Team_Buy American

Employees at the GM Plant are just a small segment of the nearly 200 million American workers honored by Labor Day, though some employees will be on the job during special sales or other holiday events. Our 24-7 life style guarantees that Labor Day looks much different now than when it first began, the result of an often turbulent history between labor, management, and the formation of unions.

Rick Demuynck Plant Mgr
Rick Demuynck, GM Plant Mgr, Wyoming

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Congress declared the first Monday in September Labor Day in 1894.  The national holiday “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” Demuynck agrees that the recognition is fitting. “Obviously, the basic wages and benefits of workers in this community – and that’s about $50 million this year – that money goes right back into the community. Beyond that, investment for operations will double in size over coming years. “

Demuynck, whose father worked in the automotive industry for 47 years, says he is “proud and humbled” to be in charge of the GM Plant. “My earliest memories from my father are the importance of hard work, the importance of labor. We (GM) are the best in the world measured in quality, productivity, any way you want to measure, a direct result of women and men who work here.”

Even though technological advances have reduced jobs over the years, Demuynck claims it would be a mistake to think people are not critical to plant operations.

“Technology is present in different forms of assembly and manufacturing, it helps in quality, which is important in manufacturing. But at the end of day, this is still a people system. We will never be any stronger than the people in the operation in every department.”

So if you’re shopping today, eating at a restaurant, in need of a hospital or any of the other services that keep people on the job today, be sure to thank them. No matter how technical our world gets, people still make Labor Day worth celebrating.

Brewery Tour to Give Rare Glimpse Into Hop Harvest Season

Hop Head Farms, breweries to showcase flavor, aroma of the Michigan hops

Late August and early September mark the end of summer and the peak of the hop harvest season.

Of the four main ingredients in craft beer, none of them boast the rabid following of the humulus lupulus, or hops. West Michigan Beer Tours, in collaboration with JW Marriott Grand Rapids, Hop Head Farms, of Hickory Corners, Walldorff Brewpub & Bistro, of Hastings, and Founders Brewing Co., of Grand Rapids, will offer a unique immersion into the exciting season with our Hop Harvest Beer Tour.

Registration for the Hop Harvest Beer Tour will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Six.One.Six restaurant inside the JW Marriott Grand Rapids. The bus will depart at noon for Hop Head Farms, a 30-acre farm in Hickory Corners outside of Kalamazoo that is growing and providing hops for breweries all over the country, as well as internationally. Several Michigan breweries will provide samples of their beer using hops from Hop Head Farms to be tasted as part of the unique tour of the hop fields and processing equipment.

“This is a rare opportunity to get a look into what happens to bring our hops to harvest. We do not offer public tours during harvest because of the sheer busyness of the time. We have only a few short weeks to get all of the hops down, picked and dried at their peak maturity. Our facility is the only of it’s kind in the United States, German engineered and chosen to handle our hops to result in the best end product,” Hop Head Farms co-founder Bonnie Steinman said.

After Hop Head Farms, the bus, with Bonnie Steinman on board to answer questions about hops, heads to the Walldorff Brewpub & Bistro in Hastings where brewer Brett Hammond frequently uses Hop Head Farms hops, including in Walldorff’s Harvest Ale. We’ll deliver fresh hops to Hammond. Guests will receive samples or a pint, as well as a tour of the production space.

The trip also visits Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, a frequent collaborator with Hop Head Farms, before returning to the JW Marriott Grand Rapids at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Beer City USA Hotel Packages are also available at the JW Marriott. For more information, contact Brian Behler at brian.behler@jwgr.com or by phone at 616-242-1462.

Tickets for the tour are on sale now. They are $69 for the standard ticket, which includes samples or a pint at Hop Head Farms, Founders and Walldorff, or $85 for premium tickets, which includes everything from the standard ticket as well as a beer at the JW Marriott during registration, a logo’d pint glass from Hop Head Farms and a West Michigan Beer Tours T-shirt.

Brewery Vivant’s 5th Annual Wood-Aged Beer Fest: A Beer Lover’s Paradise

BreweryVivantBrewery Vivant celebrates the art and science of barrel-aging beer with its 5th Annual Wood-Aged Beer Festival (WABF) Saturday, September 19th in the parking lot behind the Brewery. Vivant will hold two tasting sessions: Afternoon (1-4p) and Evening (5-8p) to allow for more people to enjoy over 20 limited, rare, and exclusive beers in an intimate beer-centric environment.

The Vivant scratch-kitchen will have festival foods available should hunger arise. Tickets are $35 and include 10 tokens, a collector’s edition tasting glass, and access to some incredible beer. Limited tickets available online at www.breweryvivant.com or directly through wabf15.brownpapertickets.com.

Fittingly, this will be the “Wooden anniversary” (as per Victorian tradition) of WABF at Brewery Vivant as they celebrate their 5th festival and 5th year in business in the East Hills neighborhood of Grand Rapids. Opening the festival up for two identical sessions will give more beer drinkers a chance to enjoy all that the festival has to offer, particularly more beer tasting. “We’re hoping with more tokens in your glass from the start, less people on the grounds at once, and a map to guide you, this year’s festival will be the best one yet,” says Kate Avery, Abbess of Beer and Director of Sales & Marketing, “The brewers have been plotting for this unveiling since last November. It’s their big party with big flavors. We’re glad to share it with more enthusiasts by offering two sessions this year.”

Brewery VivantWood-aging beers harkens back to the earliest beer brewing traditions when vessels were all made of wood and brewers worked to blend flavors into drinkable liquid. Unique flavor profiles arise in the already flavor-forward craft beers when aged in wood. Brewery Vivant will be hauling out old favorites from the vault, as well as new never-before-tasted experiments. Love Shadow, the bourbon barrel-aged Imperial stout makes a triumphant return to tap handles, as well as a cellared Wizard Burial Ground (2014 vintage bourbon barrel-aged quadruple).

Get your tickets early as this event is the highlight of the Fall beer season and will sell out. The Pub will be open for business as usual on Saturday, 11am-midnight. The festival grounds are separate.

Gerald R. Ford International Airport Records Busiest Month in Airport History

New Record Airport pictureJuly 2015 was the single busiest month in Gerald R. Ford International (GFIA) Airport history.

July passenger numbers were up 9.4% year-over-year; resulting in the busiest July ever, and breaking an all-time monthly record from March 2015. It goes down as the busiest July on record, surpassing July 2011 by nearly 6%.

“Month after month our numbers are increasing, and we could not be more thrilled by the support from our area passengers,” said GFIA Executive Director Brian Ryks.

“As a result of this growth, our airline partners are taking interest by investing in more seats through the introduction of larger aircraft and additional nonstop routes to and from Grand Rapids, which is good for our entire region.”

GFIA is on pace to break its annual passenger total, already 9.6% ahead of passenger totals from 2015.

March 2015 was previously the busiest month in GFIA history with 231,138 total passengers. July 2015 234,282 total passengers passed through GFIA.

Doug Small, President and CEO of Experience Grand Rapids, said that it was also the best performing hotel month.

They are independent if less than 25 percent of the company is owned by an alcohol industry member that is not a craft brewer and traditional if the majority of total beverage alcohol volume in the brews are traditional or innovative ingredients or fermentation methods.

What does West Michigan have to offer? Craft beer is brewed all over West Michigan. Make sure to check out one or all of these great breweries near and around Grand Rapids!

No-kill Cat Shelter Celebrates 10 years of Saving Lives!

michele_smith-aversa10 years ago this month, Gina Marvin founded Focus On Ferals (FOF). 1 year ago this month, FOF moved into their new, and larger, Byron Center facility.

Two wonderful events to celebrate!

Starting out in 2005, Marvin provided Trap-Neuter-Return services (TNR consists of the humane trapping, sterilization, and return of feral cats to their familiar habitat) and cared for a handful of stray and sick cats in her garage. Since then, Marvin now has a crew of dedicated volunteers that help her oTessa Tito Atlasrganize and run the current multi-location program.

The TNR is done out of Lowell, the current adoption center is in Byron Center, there are foster families throughout West Michigan, and PetSmart in Grandville is currently featuring FOF cats!

Marvin routinely pulls cats from some of the “high-kill” shelters around West Michigan and places them into the program. These cats are listed as Shelter Pull Kitties on their adoption listing. When a Shelter Pull Kitty is adopted, Marvin is able to rescue another cat from one of those facilities. Cats in FOF’s program stay in residence for as long as it takes to get adopted –some just a few months, others for several years.

kittensRunning the program takes dedication, time, medicine, patience and of course, money. Come out on Sunday, August 23 and meet Marvin, her volunteers, see the facilities and meet all the kittens and cats that are waiting for their “forever families” to bring them to their “forever homes!”

Come, Celebrate 10 Years of Focus On Ferals No-Kill Cat Rescue and Adoption Center.

Classic Cars and Renovations abound at Leadfoot Muscle Cars

Leadfoot Showroommike_dewittWhat was once a night club, pumping the bass and serving drinks to thirsty patrons, is now a car showcase full of muscle and metal. Classic muscle cars and exotic Ferraris and Porsches fill a room teeming with energy. While the nightclub is no more, it’s impossible not to feel the thrill of rising heart rate upon entering, no loud music necessary.

The cars in the showcase are all road-ready. Some needed tweaking here and there, but they’re eagerly awaiting a driver – after all – cars are meant to be driven. Where they currently sit, it’s impossible to tell if any of them have had any work done. They’re all in tip-top shape and manicured to a ‘T’. The horses have all been stabled and primed, and now are ready to be unleashed!

Leadfoot Muscle Cars 2
A nightclub has been turned into a jaw-dropping showcase

Welcome to Leadfoot Muscle Cars, a classic car dealership located in Holland, with a little something for every car lover.

“It’s always fun working on these muscle cars. These are what I grew up with in high school, and now they’re classics!” Explains manager Marty Boysen, his passion revving up and hitting second gear. Before Leadfoot, Marty owned his own dealership in the 90’s. Some of his former employees came with him to Leadfoot when the dealership opened a little over a year ago.

For Marty and the rest of the crew at Leadfoot, to say cars are an important part of their life might be the understatement of the century – like saying the Titanic hit an ice-cube. Cars are so integral to their existence that if you cut them open, an engine might purr in place of a heart!

Leadfoot Muscle Cars 3
A warehouse full of classic cars awaiting renovation

Leadfoot started a little differently than most dealerships, with an initial purchase of an 80-car collection. Some were ready for sale while others needed a full renovation, which Leadfoot was more than happy to furnish in their full detail and body shop. A warehouse a mile down the road houses more classic beauties awaiting their renovations, in addition to those in the showroom.

In total, Leadfoot owns an astonishing 250 cars.

As a young company, albeit one ripened with experience, Leadfoot is gearing up for Metro Cruise this upcoming weekend to entrench their name in the West Michigan community.

“We’re looking to get exposure and present our cars out at Metro Cruise. We’re bringing our five-car trailer. Expect to see some Mustangs and Chevelles,” mentions Marty. “We’ve sold our cars all over the country, but our home is in West Michigan. Metro Cruise will only help us connect to our community.”

Leadfoot Muscle Cars and their trailer will be next to WKTV’s DreamWheels! red carpet event at the old Klingman’s parking lot.

A Man’s Passion Becomes a World Famous Collection

Lingenfelter 1mike_dewittBefore the number could reach 250, it had to start at 1.

When Ken Lingenfelter thinks back to when his collection truly started, it began with a car he no longer keeps around. “They’re beautiful cars, although, they don’t tend to work very well all the time,” describes Lingenfelter as he reminisces on his old Jaguar XKE, “They’re pretty special, as you know. Made those cars in the 60’s and a little bit into the 70’s.”

Lingenfelter 2This is the beauty of Ken and the Lingenfelter Collection, if it doesn’t work, why keep it around? Cosmetics and aesthetics can only take you so far.

With 250 cars in the collection, 190 of which are housed in a jaw-dropping 40,000 square-foot garage in Brighton, Michigan, there’s enough variety to fill every appetite.

American muscle cars from the 60’s and 70’s fill 30 percent of the garage. Ken lived his teenage years with these cars, so they all have a special place in his heart. El Caminos, Cougar Eliminators, Mustangs, Shelby GTs, and Camaros are some of the muscle packed into a garage with more than enough horsepower to go around. A Pontiac Fiero – a car that seems out-of-place in one of the greatest car collections in the world – even makes an appearance! It helps that Ken owned one ‘back in the day’ and loved it.

Duntov Mule
The Duntov Mule – The first Corvette with a V-8 engine.

While the collection has a solid muscle foundation, the Lingenfelter name is synonymous with Corvettes. With 75 Corvettes, the Lingenfelter Collection could transition easily to a history museum.

The Duntov Mule, named after Chevrolet engineer Zora Arkus Duntov, may be the most historically significant car in the collection. It was the first Corvette to be outfitted with a V-8 engine, and the rest is history. Back in 1954, the Duntov Mule could reach speeds of 163 mph. A number that makes you cringe out of fear for the driver when taking a look at the vehicle. The Corvette hasn’t looked back!

LaFerrari
LaFerrari – An invite only purchase

The third and final area of the garage is filled with exotic cars. These cars are rare, limited, powerful, and carry massive sex appeal.

LaFerrari – Italian for The Ferrari – is currently the biggest draw in the collection. It wasn’t as simple as showing up with a check ready. No, Ferrari had to personally invite you to buy the car! According to Ken, “Ferrari liked the charity work we do and that we share our cars with the public at events.”

In the exotic garage also sits a Lamborghini Reventon (one of 20 made in the world), a Bugatti Veyron and all the horse power that comes with it, and the Ferrari Enzo. The last of which happens to be Ken’s personal favorite in the entire collection, and one of only 399 in the world.

“That Enzo is special to me because I set a business goal for myself, and I reached it,” recalls Lingenfelter with passion oozing from his pores. “I worked hard to achieve a goal, and the Ferrari Enzo was the final goal at the end of that road. I’m a Corvette guy, but that Enzo is very special to me.”

The Ferrari Enzo, Ken's favorite car in the collection
The Ferrari Enzo, Ken’s favorite car in the collection

For Ken, the collection has always been something special. However, it wasn’t until the Lingenfelter Collection started participating in charity events that Ken realized he possessed something the rest of the world thought was special as well. It’s the people who keep on coming back that remind Ken of the gift he possesses, and Ken wants to share it with the world.

“I just have a pure passion for cars, especially Corvettes!”

Ken will be sending two cars from his collection to showcase during WKTV’s DreamWheels! red carpet television event at the 28th Street Metro Cruise. It all takes place outside in the old Klingman’s parking lot across from Rogers Plaza. The show goes live on Friday, August 21 from 8 to 10 p.m. and again with new cars on Saturday, August 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. Best of all – admission is free!

Ken Lingenfelter– He Loves Cars–But Giving to Charity Means Just As Much!

The WKTV Citizen Journalism Team gets to visit with Ken Lingenfelter and view his collection.
The WKTV Citizen Journalism Team gets to visit with Ken Lingenfelter and view his collection.

Let’s talk about a passionate, generous man. He’s an affable, teddy bear of a man cub who just happens to own one of the most rare and expensive automobile collections in the world.

Meet Brighton Michigan’s own Ken Lingenfelter. He’s a guy with huge heart and a very large car collection. The Lingenfelter Collection totals around 250 and includes a variety of Corvettes, muscle cars, and sleek exotic sports cars. Several vehicles in the collection are among the most rare automobiles in the world, including a 1.5 million Lamborghini, a Bugatti Veyron, Enzo Ferrari, and a Lamborghini Reventón. Not your Grandpa’s automobiles. But you know what means just as much to him as this fabulous grouping of expensive cars?—CHARITY.

Lingenfelter is even generous with his time. When our WKTV Citizen Journalism team showed up we were expecting about a half an hour at the most of a guided tour and interview. Three hours later our jaw dropping experience in the 40, 000 square foot facility with the best tour guide in existence was drawing to a close.  Ling 2

The collection isn’t open to the public, but: “The reason for this collection centers around charity. It’s our mission! We have hosted everything here from black tie affairs, to beer and pizza events to having the Boy Scouts host their Pine Derby event here. We have about 100 events a year,” Lingenfelter explained.

Some charities include the Ronald McDonald House, Breast Cancer research, Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, Juvenile Diabetes, Boy Scouts, youth organizations and many more.

If a charity has a sound cause Lingenfelter is there. Everything that he touches is guided by generosity. The human dynamo is always in perpetual motion raising money with private showings, tours and events while continually showcasing his infectious enthusiasm for his collection.  Ling 7

While the collection currently is not open to the public, it is available for corporate and charity events, silent and live auctions, and car-club specialty showings. For more information on the collection, or to learn about availability and scheduling an event, please call (248) 486-5342 Ext. 10.  Or, go to his website at www.thelingenfeltercollection.com

Ling 11Two of Ken’s cars and many more will be featured during WKTV’s live production of “DreamWheels!” It all takes place outside in the old Klingman’s parking lot across from Rogers Plaza. The show goes live on Friday, August 21 from 8 to 10 p.m. and again with new cars on Saturday, August 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a crosswalk between Rogers Plaza and the old Klingman’s for easy access. ‘Fun Five’ Whittled Down to Three

All the way back in October of yesteryear, Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley raved of a little something he likes to call his ‘Fun Five.’ The ‘Fun Five’ is a group of five businesses the Mayor is actively approaching to open up shop in Kentwood for everyone to enjoy!

With its opening in May, Dave & Buster’s, a restaurant/arcade, was the first of the five dominoes to fall in Kepley’s plan.

In less than 60 days, a second domino will fall when Trader Joe’s has its grand opening on September 25th!

“Trader Joe’s is a destination spot,” explained Mayor Kepley, “People have mentioned their excitement. It’s a spot customers will plan a trip around to fill out their grocery lists. It will bring a lot of business to Kentwood.”

When Mayor Kepley was campaigning for Mayor, he promised to bring 400 news jobs to the area in 4 years. A promise that he is intent on keeping.

The positivity is overwhelming from the Mayor about his “Fun Five.” He has succeeded in opening up two of the five business he envision. Whole Foods, Chick-Fil-A, and The Cheesecake Factory are still prizes waiting to be caught!

New Founders Beer sends Proceeds to ArtPrize

Founders 2Founders Brewing Co. today announced it would introduce Spectra Trifecta, brewed in the traditional Kolsch style, this September. Proceeds from the sale of this new beer will benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition that takes place annually in Grand Rapids, Mich. Spectra Trifecta will be sold in 12 oz. bottles in Michigan, Wisconsin, greater New York City and greater Chicago with a suggested retail price of $9.99 per 6-pack. Drafts will be sent throughout Founders’ distribution footprint.

In April 2013 the two organizations inked a deal that made Founders the official brewery of ArtPrize for the next five years. Last year’s release was Mosaic Promise, and the 2013 release was Inspired Artist Black IPA.

“I love coming up with the recipe for the ArtPrize beer every year,” said Founders Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki. “For the past two years, I’ve worked on our pilot system to develop an approachable, lower alcohol beer with tons of flavor. This year’s beer is brewed using a different fermentation process than what we usually use, and is made with some fun, nontraditional ingredients.”

Brewed in the traditional Kolsch style, which requires fermenting ale yeast at a colder temperature and gives the beer a clean finish without fruity yeast esters. This bright, golden beer is brewed with a trifecta of natural ingredients: earthy, floral and slightly sweet chamomile; a touch of citrusy lemongrass; and a hint of spicy fresh ginger. At 5.9% ABV and 20 IBUs, it’s delightfully refreshing.

Founders Family members were given the opportunity to submit their portfolios to find an artistic match for the Spectra Trifecta label, without knowing anything about the beer.

Alexis Brooke’s nature-inspired pen and ink drawings fit well with the character of this beer, so she was selected to create the label, with a focus on illustrating the beer’s special ingredients. Alexis is a Grand Rapids native and has been a Founders employee since fall 2014, working in the deli and on the catering team. She created this mixed media piece with markers, ink and watercolors.

Proceeds from the sale of Spectra Trifecta will support the future programming of the ArtPrize organization. ArtPrize is an international art competition, open to any artist and decided by public vote. Its mission is to promote critical dialogue and collaboration through new, creative ideas among a large and diverse population of people.

As an innovator in redefining what beer can be, Founders believes that experimentation is central to the human experience—whether one experiments with grains and hops or markers and watercolors—and that sharing one’s creation with the public is a brave act worth celebrating.

“Founders is now undoubtedly one of the finest craft brewers not only in Michigan but in the entire United States,” said Christian Gaines, executive director of ArtPrize. “We’re immeasurably proud to call Founders the official ArtPrize Brewery and share in the excitement of their new special release, Spectra Trifecta—a culmination of our partnership, built upon a mutual passion for our community and the creativity that resides within it.”

More than 400,000 people are expected to attend ArtPrize Seven this fall.

Spectra Trifecta will be available for a limited time starting on Sunday, September 13, in Michigan, Wisconsin, metro NYC and Chicagoland in bottles and across Founders’ entire distribution footprint on draft. It will be released in the brewery’s taproom on draft and in bottles starting on Monday, September 14. Spectra Trifecta will be featured at official ArtPrize events.

This year marks the seventh edition of ArtPrize, which will take place Sept. 23–Oct. 11, 2015. The Founders taproom will be a venue for the seventh year running.

The Saga of the Steelcase Pyramid

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrbA11QoQVw

colleen_piersonIt’s an icon, a landmark and a true beauty.  Steelcase’s seven-story pyramid shaped research facility sits on 125 acres of property.  It is definitely one of a kind.

When the building– located at 6100 East Paris Ave.– first opened in 1989 the cost was $111 million. In 2009, Steelcase announced it would be moving its workforce of 500 employees from the pyramid to its 44th Street location.

So, what happens now to this gem of a pyramid?

At one point there was talk of demolishing the vacated 670,000 square-foot building. Other plans included housing a specialty school.

Those plans have been abandoned as new owners enter the picture.

Land Developer Don Roger Norman of Reno, Nevada recently purchased the building for an undisclosed amount.

We had a chance to sit down with  Jim Faunce, the newly appointed property manager, and Tom P. DeBoer, Broker for Colliers, Inc. to share their insights on the project.

“This is the most amazing building I have ever  seen,” said Faunce who just moved here from Colorado to head the project. “I am in total awe of it.”

It’s easy to be in awe and take in the wonder of 16-foot ceilings, the only spherical compound pendulum in the world, full service cafeteria/kitchen, media production facilities, sound proof rooms, exterior balconies and miles of granite.

“We have had interest of numerous companies to lease.  It is 1.5 million just to hold the building.  We are working on cosmetic upgrades, monitoring the mechanical, redoing the parking lot and stabilizing the building so it runs effectively,” DeBoer explained.

That could come in with a price tag of five million.

But for everyone involved with the building, it is well worth it.

Movies keep getting grander. Summer blockbusters continually break records – Jurassic World now owns the record for largest opening weekend box office with over $208 million – and it’s a go big or go home business. Everything is digital, remastered or filmed in 3D, and CGI (Computer Generated Images) has taken over.

CGI is so heavily used that when Mad Max: Fury Road decided not to use it, and rely on real stunts, it was applauded.

While the movies continually get bigger, so do those ticket prices. A night at the movies for a family of four can cost a small fortune. It’s an investment, an event, and Celebration Cinemas is innovating and evolving to make your movie experience truly one-of-a-kind.

It starts with the seating. The place where any movie goer will be spending the majority of their time.

Celebration Cinemas has outfitted some of their screens and theaters with D-Box seats that pitch, roll, and move with the action on the screen.”If you have a good action film going, this seats going to be moving all over the place,” explained Steve VanWagoner, Celebration’s Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations, “It’s a one of a kind experience.”

Oscar's Bistro brings a restaurant, along with a full bar, to the movie scene.
Oscar’s Bistro brings a restaurant, along with a full bar, to the movie scene.

D-Box seats aren’t the only unique seating choice Celebration offers. The entire front row of the IMAX theater is outfitted with recliners! That’s right, Celebration Cinemas outfitted their theaters with everyone’s favorite mode of relaxation. The recliners give a new twist to the phrase ‘home theater.’

The new seats are exciting and something new, but Celebration is cooking up a lot more than new seats. Select locations – Portage, Okemos, and now Muskegon – now have an Oscar’s Bistro. Oscar’s Bistro is a restaurant loaded with a full bar and dining options. It’s bringing a restaurant to the movies. Dinner and a movie can all be done in one place. Dates just became a lot less complicated!

On top of seating and food, Celebration is experimenting with new entertainment options. Instead of the focus being solely on Hollywood movies, Celebration offers live sporting events and concerts that play right in the theater.

Pork-(Small)
The pulled pork sliders at Oscar’s Bistro are quite the hit.

Independent films are being explored with independent film series at select theaters. It’s a way to encapsulate a new audience and give viewers something different.

Celebration Cinemas is constantly innovating to stay ahead of the curve. A family’s entertainment dollars are tight and with Netflix, TV, and home entertainment, the theaters need to offer a little more ‘oompf’ to its’ audience.

The new innovations are exciting and impressive. Go to the movies and try out them out, you won’t be disappointed!

Cut Costs on Prescription Meds Through Smart Choices

Prescription Drugs Many of us struggle to pay for the prescription medication costs every month, some having to choose between purchasing food and the medication. We have had insurance for years and only needed to pay our copay, but this year we were faced with having to cover a high deductable before our insurance takes effect. We were needing to cut our costs so I made a master list of all our medications and began to do the research. By using the internet you can compare prices, saving gas and time.

Www.michigandrugprices.com www.medtipster.com www.goodrx.com www.walmart.com www.target.com www.meijer.com/pharmacy http://familyfare.spartan.com/pharmacy When doing your research keep in mind that there are several stores that offer FREE medications for certain conditions while others offer discount programs or cards. It pays to do the research. Our research paid off, since we added up the highest price for all our medications it could cost us $2,000.00 per month, compared to the lowest cost of those same medication of $250.00 per month. If your Doctor feels you must use certain name brand medications ask if they have discount cards available from the drug/company rep. A good example for us was Eliquis the Doctor felt it was necessary for this medication to be used, yet the 30 day supply was average $388.00. 90 day supply average $1084.26. Our Doctor gave us a card from the Drug Rep bringing our cost down to $10.00 for 30 day. Lipitor Generic is FREE at Meijer for a 30 day supply yet can cost 17.57 – 106.99 at other stores Metformin is FREE at Family Fare for 30 – 90 day supply yet can cost as much as $272.97 for 30 day or 980.93 for 90 day supply Lisinopril 30 day supply as low as $4.00 as high as $34.69 90 day as low as $10.00 as high as $64.59 Meijer offers a Pharmacy rewards program that works along with Mperks after filling 5 you can receive $10.00 or after 10 you can receive $20.00 off your purchases in store. Some stores offer their own discount prescription program, it’s best to compare if there is a cost if it would be worth signing up for or not. We found that there may only be a few that were cheaper for us and we had to weigh the cost of the program to the savings over the year. Some stores offer Gift Cards, Store credits or other rewards programs if you fill a new or transferred prescription to them. These are some ways to help cut cost on other purchases. The time I spent doing this research has paid off saving us several thousand dollars over time. Do keep in mind that even if you do not have a membership at Sams Club or Costco you are still able to get prescriptions filled there. Like other retailers they are lower on some medications, yet higher on others.
Compare prices and save on the prescription drugs you need

Cost-Saving Grocery Store Tips Through the Use of Apps

A few years ago I would have to get the Sunday Press in order to start the process of building my grocery list. I looked for what foods were on sale that week and what meals should be prepared based upon sale prices. While my questions haven’t changed the process did change slightly.    Deidra 3
When I got my first iPod Touch back in 2008 one of the very first apps I downloaded was Grocery IQ.  The app allowed me to build my shopping list and have several lists according to which stores I wanted to shop at. It continues to be one of my favorite apps. I can save certain items as favorites. When I search for an item it has auto-suggest. So if I’m looking for a yogurt it will suggest very cherry or vanilla. I can also search for coupons and then email them  to myself so I can print them out. If I’m sending the hubby to do the grocery shopping I can email the list to him. You can also build the list online with their website and it will auto-sync with your mobile device.
 Deidra 2
I mainly shop at Meijer. I like my one stop shopping and being a Michigan based company I have no problem rooting for the Home Team.  If you follow Meijer on Facebook you can get a preview of the upcoming ad every Friday. It helps me get a start on my meal planning and sometimes I will wait to buy something when I know it will be on sale in just a couple of days. Family Fare also does this but releases it on Saturdays. Meijer also has their own app. If you use it with your perks number– you  will have digital coupons at the touch of a finger. My house loves a good Mperks weekend when you can save 5, 10 and even 15%. It a little Dutch girl’s dream. Don’t forget to jump on to Meijer’s free WiFi when you are in the store to use either of these apps. The Mperks app was just recently updated to be added to Passbook for you Apple lovers, like me.
After I’ve made my trip through the market I may or may not have had the thought about picking up a bottle of wine to help me relax after all that stressful shopping. Vivino is an app that my BFF told me about while she was stationed overseas in Germany. Use the app to snap the picture of the wine bottles’ label and the app pulls up information and gives you a rating. The more you tell it about what type of wines you prefer the more helpful it is. I’ve also used this to snap a picture of a wine list in restaurants. The app will give the ratings of the wine on the list.          Deidra

What Tomorrow Holds

kathy_grayMost people would agree that we live in a fast-paced world. Aided by advances in technology, many spend their days hurriedly going from task to task while continually monitoring their social media sites like Twitter and Facebook so as not to miss anything important that may be trending. We have calendars and reminders on our phones, as well as the old paper versions that hang from refrigerators and file cabinets.

This sense of “living in the moment” leaves some with the inability to see beyond the next day, the next week, or the next year. Choosing financial goals and estate planning should be of utmost importance for the future of your family or business.

However, if you are like me, planning for the future may be one of those things that you continually put off until tomorrow. One never knows what tomorrow holds and routine daily life can change in the blink of an eye.

Heidi Hilton knows this lesson well. In August 2000 she was walking with her 2 year-old daughter, Ember, near the intersection of Dutton Road and Hammond Avenue. In an instant that would change her life forever, Hilton and her daughter were hit from behind by a drunk driver. Ember was thrown into a ditch. Heidi was thrown into the road. The driver sped off, not even stopping to see the damage he had wrought.

Heidi Hilton's life changed
Heidi Hilton’s life changed when she and her daughter were hit by a drunk driver

Hilton woke in the hospital with no memory of the accident. In fact, she had no memory of her husband, Zan, who was at her bedside. Although she sustained no broken bones, Hilton suffered from a severe closed head injury as well as broken vertebrae in her neck. Her daughter, she was told, also had a closed head injury, but would recover. She did not remember her daughter, or her 2 sons, Hunter (10) and Marshall (8).

“He took my life away for 5 years,” said Hilton, “That day changed my life forever.”

The day of the accident, students from Dutton Christian were running for track practice on Dutton Road and had witnessed the event as well as taken down the license plate number.

An 86-year old man was tracked down and found with a blood alcohol level of 1.9 at 3:30 in the afternoon. He was found guilty and sentenced to prison.

Hilton was not involved in his trial and turned her anger at him into determination to regain her life. “I was bound and determined not to let this affect me,” she states. Her energy was put into physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and helping her daughter through the same. She made it a priority to return to work as soon as possible. It was a long road, but it had its bright spots. “I got to discover my husband and fall in love with him all over again.”

With a 15-year history as an investment planner, Hilton had worked with many individuals and families in times of crisis and times of estate management. She knew the lesson that life could not be taken for granted.

Unfortunately, Hilton again suffered a head injury in an auto accident in 2008. She again faced long hours of therapy. Hilton now felt a new urgency to convince others that life is fragile and people need to look to the future including finances, business investment, and family relations.

She set a personal goal of attaining her Master’s degree in Management. After obtaining her degree from Davenport University in 2012, Hilton and her partner, Craig Coughlin, who had more than 20 years of financial expertise, brought their talents together in the Thornapple River Group.

Thornapple River Group, co-founded by Hilton, helps plan finances for the future
Thornapple River Group, co-founded by Hilton, helps plan finances for the future

The vision statement of the Thornapple River Group includes providing facilitated services using an integrated team of experts to achieve goals and to preserve the quality of life they desire. For high net-worth individuals, this includes business succession, estate planning, debt management, as well as concierge services such as travel arrangements, household management, personal shopping, and security services.

“I live each day with intention,” shares Hilton, “Each day I work to help someone accomplish goals.”

Both she and Coughlin are very involved in volunteerism and philanthropy. It is an essential part of their business supporting groups such as Rotary International, Van Andel Institute, and the International Student Foundation. In 2014 they became a “family office,” serving as “family officers” for those needing assistance with financial, as well as family, business, and organizational goals. Hilton’s husband, Zan, also assists clients with property management and estate holdings through his business, Thornapple Consulting.

Hilton sees herself as coming full circle since the accident in 2000. She still lives with chronic pain and slight cognitive and memory issues, but she is proud of her accomplishments. Hilton’s life philosophy now is living with an “attitude of gratitude.” She is grateful for her husband’s patience and for the tight bond she shares with her daughter due to their shared experience.

“We are all dealt a hand,” she states, “It is up to you to make the cards work.”

She stresses that no one knows what the future holds, but we do have the ability to plan, to invest, and to organize so that when a sudden death, an unexpected diagnosis, or a life-altering accident happens we are prepared.

Have you been putting off making a will? Planning your estate? Setting financial goals? Perhaps now is the time to get moving because no one knows what tomorrow may hold.

Bipartisan Bill Would Eliminate Outdated Paperwork for Michigan Small Businesses

USSenateU.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, today cosponsored bipartisan legislation that would reduce burdensome paperwork and cut red tape for small businesses. The Microloan Act of 2015 eliminates three outdated provisions in the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Microloan Program that have been unchanged since the program’s establishment in 1991 and only create unnecessary paperwork for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

“Small businesses and startups are the engines of economic growth in Michigan, and it is critical that the SBA’s Microloan Program is up to date and streamlined to help small businesses compete and succeed,” said Senator Peters. “I’m glad to cosponsor this commonsense, bipartisan legislation that eliminates unnecessary bureaucratic red tape for small businesses and allows them to focus more on innovating and serving consumers.”

“There are many organizations like Northern Initiatives who for over twenty years, have partnered with the Small Business Administration in building the microlending program,” said Dennis West, President, Northern Initiatives. “The bill that Senator Peters is cosponsoring will give Northern Initiatives and experienced microlenders more flexibility to use our gained knowledge and judgement to work on the technical assistance needs identified by our customers. The bill will enable Northern Initiatives to help more people in rural Michigan achieve their dream of starting and growing a business.”

The legislation eliminates three provisions of the Small Business Act. In doing so, the bill:

  • Provides greater flexibility to microloan intermediaries in providing technical assistance and underwriting to current and prospective borrowers
  • Promotes local decision-making by intermediaries by addressing the current law’s approach to third party contractors, permitting smaller intermediaries with smaller grants to secure part time assistance for essential services such as bookkeeping and accounting
  • Streamlines SBA grant and loan making process by removing a provision in current law that requires SBA to limit assistance during the first six months of the fiscal year

The SBA’s Microloan Program was initially established as a pilot program in 1991. Since then, the program has grown to 137 active intermediary lenders who made more than $55 million in loans totaling $670 million to almost 4,000 small businesses across the country. In fiscal year 2014 alone, the Microloan Program made 95 microloans to Michigan small businesses totaling over $1.6 million, and helped retain or create over 300 jobs.

Kentwood Rotary Member Serves God in Eradicating Leprosy and Polio in Nigeria

Rotary 1By: Janina Pollatz

Would you think the man who helped eradicate leprosy and polio from the interior of Nigeria would live in your neighborhood?  Dr. Dirk Vander Steen has been serving with Rotary International for 37 years, and the last 20 years with Kentwood since he moved back to the United States and the West Michigan area in 1990.

“It is an accomplishment that I really treasure,” Vander Steen said proudly. In Rotary and even before that, Vander Steen has stamped his passport with numerous locations and different experiences all around the world.

As a youngster he was already traveling around the world– but not for a good reason. He spent months in Grindelwald, Switzerland with three hundred other boys from his homeland of the Netherlands to be researched on the trauma effects of wars on children.  The reason being he was suffering heavily from lack of essential foods and vitamins.

He then moved to Canada,  quit school at the age of 13 and began working in a grocery chain store.  At the age of 21 Vander Steen said God gave his life a purpose.

“I went to a young people’s convention where I heard a missionary speak and that touched my life then and there,” Vander Steen explained. “After that, I drove to Grand Rapids, met the Dean of Calvin College and he took me in, even if it was on probation from my two years of high school experience.” Here at Calvin, Vander Steen met his wife Jean who also wanted to be a missionary, and after a year they were married and on their way to Nigeria.

Dirk's group of missionaries work as a team.

The Vander Steen’s stayed full time in Nigeria for 13 years, and even today make it a point to go once or twice a year to complete his ten years as a Trustee of the University of Mkar in the Benue State of Nigeria.  They also help out and bring gifts they collected from Rotary. The Kentwood Rotary’s most recent gift was musical instruments to a Rotary club in Jos, Nigeria.

“It was part of Rotary’s peace project in Nigeria,” Vander Steen said. “To make music instead of war.”

Vander Steen has served many roles in Tivland, Nigeria- being a Rotary Club member, making prosthetic limbs for polio and leprosy patients, translating a steward manuscript, working with local churches, and his most rewarding role of being a teacher.

A gift from a Nigerian student to show appreciation is a treasure to Dirk.

“I see kids that I taught and have watched them grow to become heads of organizations and the university or even being my boss,” Vander Steen shared enthusiastically.  “It is one of the most rewarding feelings to see them succeed.”

One woman in particular has stood out in his memory.

“In 1965, I had the first female students in my secondary school class,” Vander Steen explained.

In Nigeria, young ladies were not allowed to attend any secondary school due to social customs. Rhoda Ako, one of those first ten females in his class, became the Head of Nigeria’s Customs. Vander Steen said that he is most proud of her work to create unity in a country torn apart by tribalism, and by her kind heart.

“When Rhoda Ako heard that I was back in Nigeria about seven years ago, she came to say ‘thank you for believing in me and helping me when I wanted to drop out’,” Vander Steen remembered fondly. “I think that is the best reward a teacher can get.”

Vander Steen has put more than 50 years of his life into his mission work in Nigeria and in serving Rotary.  He takes great pride in the role he played in eradicating and educating people from Nigeria in regards to leprosy.

“I have done so many different things.” Vander Steen recalls. “My life has been so enriched. God has blessed me and helped me be a blessing to many people on both sides of the globe.”

Toothbrush Manufacturer Bringing Jobs Back Stateside

Ranirmike_dewittWhile many companies are sending their manufacturing overseas, the City of Kentwood is set to receive a shot in the arm with hometown company Ranir bringing jobs back home.

Ranir, the largest manufacturer of store brand toothbrushes, is switching up gears and bringing its manufacturing from China to the company’s headquarters in Kentwood.

By bringing manufacturing back to Michigan, Ranir will create nine new jobs initially. The plant will make about 5 million brush heads per year. Both of those numbers have the potential to grow as the plant grows in the coming years.

While it’s always a
nice story to bring jobs back home, Ranir has found a way for the numbers to make sense and justify leaving the cheap labor costs in China. Greg McCormick, Ranir’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, cited the simplification of the supply chain using technology.

“We figured out a way to automate the production by using technology to simplify the design,” explained McCormick, “It takes the complexity out of the supply chain and reduces the amount of shipping time to our customers.”

What China offers in labor costs, Ranir was able to make up in shipping time and technologic
al advancements.

Ranir started in Kentwood over 30 years ago and the company relishes the opportunity to bring work back home.

“It’s very exciting to bring manufacturing back to Michigan!” exclaimed McCormick, “What we’re doing is truly new to world innovation. A lot of major brand names haven’t been able to do this with their products. We are the number one player in retail brush heads, and we’ve been able to figure it out! This gives us an opportunity to bring more jobs home.”

The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden Opens to Rave Reviews

Japanes Garden 4Rockford Resident Kathy Ray was in total awe upon her first visit to The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden colleen_piersonat Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

“The beauty, tranquility and elegance I experienced on my first visit brought me to tears, she told the WKTV Citizen Journalism team.

Janina Pollatz, a Junior at Easter Michigan University, learned the true meaning of relaxation upon her time spent at the garden.

“After a stressful school year and competing in track all season, it was so relaxing to walk in and just slow down and experience the peacefulness and calmness of the surroundings,” she remarked.   Japanese Garden 2

The garden features traditional components such as waterfalls, elevation changes, extensive boulder placement, authentic Japanese structures and a functioning teahouse. The Japanese Garden,  embraces the essence of traditional Japanese gardens—tranquility, contemplation and beauty. The design effectively uses space to highlight contrasts between still and rushing water, between quietly intimate spaces and expansive open spaces, and between manicured and natural areas.

What a great opportunity to talk to the
What a great opportunity to talk to Steve La Warre

We had the opportunity to speak with Director of Horticulture Steve La Warre for a behind the scenes look at the design and execution of the Japanese Garden.

“This is an eight acre addition located in the middle of the 158- acre main campus.  It has been a four year ongoing project. Construction commenced in 2012 and we reached our fundraising goal of $22 million,” he explained.

That is the type of generosity that West Michigan residents can appreciate from the late Fred Meijer and wife Lena, Richard and Helen DeVos and over 200 community members.

Steve La Warre also shared the sheer uniqueness of working with designer Hoichi Kurisu to create this garden of innovation.

“He is from Japan and bought a house here in West Michigan and has been here for the past five years. During that time he transformed an expansive marsh and wooded valley into an international design that uses the garden space to its best potential as a sensory experience. Every tree, every boulder was placed by him. He is known for his use of space.”

“It has been a great honor for me to work on this very special project for Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park,” said Hoichi Kurisu, the garden’s master designer and president of Kurisu International, Inc. “Fred Meijer’s dream for such a garden for his wife Lena, and of Richard and Helen DeVos has become my dream, too.  My wish is that the beauty and tranquility of this space will touch the visitors very deeply for many generations to come.”Japanese Garden 3

As the WKTV Community News team experienced the garden, we thought about how the environment would change throughout all the seasons and how every location played off our senses. And standing by the rushing waterfalls, and Zen style garden took our daily stress away. We also marveled at the innovation, the beautiful views, and how lucky West Michigan is to have the garden at our path.  Japanese Garden 1

General Motors announces 300 new jobs and a $119 million dollar expansion at Wyoming Plant

General Motors 2How does 300 new jobs and an investment of $119 million sound?  General Motors is proud to announce their plans for a new production line at its plant at 1600 Burton S.W.

They will invest $119 million in tools and equipment to support production of future vehicle components at its Grand Rapids Operations. Hence, the creation of 300 future jobs.

The plant currently has approximately 500 employees on three shifts and produces a variety of precision-machined automotive engine components used in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.

Details about program timing and applications will be released later.   General Motors 3

“This investment in the future recognizes the excellent workforce at Grand Rapids Operations” said GM North America Manufacturing Manager Scott Whybrew. “It also demonstrates GM’s collaboration with our UAW partners to innovate and bring tangible benefits to our customers.”

The announcement has been in the works for quite some time, according to city officials.

City Manager Curtis Holt was elated with the news: “GM’s investment is a testament to the fact that Wyoming is a great place to do business. We are home to a skilled workforce, which will allow the company to draw employees from its own backyard. “In 2011, the Wyoming City Council entered into a personal property tax exemption agreement with GM for the facility. We are glad this has proven to be a beneficial investment on the City’s part and that the abatement will work as designed to promote economic growth and increase capital investment in the City. “We have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship with GM, and are very pleased that the company has chosen to expand in Wyoming,” he said.

The investment in the GM Components Holdings, LLC plant is part of the $5.4 billion investment in U.S. facilities that GM announced April 30, with approximately $3 billion identified to date. Today’s news of 300 future plant jobs represents nearly half of the 650 planned employee additions within GM.    General Motors 1

“By working together, UAW members and GM are making a difference in communities across the United States,” said UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada. “These investments represent the power of our partnership and collective bargaining to create jobs and improve competitiveness, quality and our manufacturing base in this country.”

The expansion was announced at a news conference in which four local charities were presented a check for $20,000.

Receiving the donations were:

• West Michigan Environmental Action Council’s watershed education program at Godfrey –Lee Schools.

• Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank.

• Greater Wyoming Community Resource Alliance.

• Finish the Mission Veterans Relief Fund.

Returning for a third year, families can decorate the streets with sidewalk chalk and create recycled art with local artist Reb Roberts, hula hoop with Audacious Hoops and watch 61Syx Teknique break it down between music sets.

Sustainability

Last year, the Street Party was nearly a zero waste event with an 85.7% diversion rate (zero waste events are classified as 90% – and events the size of the Street Party are typically at 50-60%). While in 2015 Local First is striving to increase this rate, sustainability isn’t just about how much is recycled and composted, it’s about how much can be prevented from being wasted in the first place. That’s why Local First is asking that people bring empty, refillable water bottles to the event. In addition, Local First is encouraging attendees to use alternate transportation: carpool with friends and family, ride the Rapid, bike, or walk to the event.

New this Year

Local First has teamed up with Uber to provide an Uber pickup station at the event. First time Uber users will receive a free ride.

The event is free to attend. Food and beverage tickets will be on sale at the event – cash and credit will be accepted. For more information about the Local First Street Party, go to localfirst.com/events/street-party.

Peters, Stabenow Applaud $446,875 Federal Investment for Grand Rapids Home for Veterans

U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow today applauded a $446,875 federal investment in the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. The grant, which comes from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), will go towards installing an anti-wander and security system.

“Our brave men and women in uniform have defended our country and freedom, and they deserve the best care possible,” said Senator Peters, a former Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. “We must keep the promises that we have made to our veterans, and I applaud this critical investment that will help keep Michigan veterans safe.”

“America’s heroes selflessly put their lives on the line to protect our country,” said Senator Stabenow. “Today’s announcement is great news for our veterans in Grand Rapids. Not only will this new security system help make sure they stay safe, it will give their families peace of mind.”

The Grand Rapids Home for Veterans stretches across 90 acres and provides critical long-term care to veterans, from rehabilitation therapy to spiritual, social, recreational and educational activities. The facility hosts 450 nursing care beds and more than 100 domiciliary beds. The nursing care beds include 115 special needs beds, with two 35-bed nursing units for the care of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and one 45-bed nursing unit for dual diagnoses patients.

Senator Peters has been a strong voice for Michigan service members and veterans in Congress. Earlier this year, Peters cosponsored the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, bipartisan legislation that was signed into law by the President earlier this year to provide additional resources to improve mental health care and suicide prevention programs for veterans.

For years, Senator Stabenow has led the fight to make sure they have access to the care and resources they need. She has led efforts to bring VA clinics to Michigan so veterans don’t have to drive hundreds of miles to receive medical treatment. In recent years, new clinics have opened in Alpena, Bad Axe, Cadillac, Clare, Grayling, and Mackinaw City.
