Kentwood Public Schools seeks applicants for vacated Board of Education trustee position

Kentwood Public Schools announced this week that it is seeking applicants for a now-open position of trustee on the KPS Board of Education, a seat until recently held by Angie Forton, who vacated the position after moving our of the district.

 

Applications are available now and must be received by the district office by Monday, April 11, to meet state law for a quick appointment of a new board member.

 

“We are thankful for Angie’s 11 years of service on the Board and her dedication to the Kentwood community,” KPS Superintendent Kevin Polston said in the announcement.

 

The resignation of trustee Forton was effective March 31, and under Michigan Law the vacancy must be filled within 30 days.

 

“The Board intends to complete its search and appoint a replacement by April 25th, 2022. Under current law, the appointee’s term shall run through the next regular school board election, which occurs on November 8, 2022. If the appointee would like to serve beyond that time frame, then he/she must run for election in November 2022,” according to the announcement. 

 

The qualifications for a replacement board member are the they must be a registered voter in the school district, at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, a resident of the State of Michigan for at least 30 days, and a resident of the Kentwood Public School district.

 

Application for the position is available to fill out online. Persons wishing to fill out a hard copy, may visit the administration building at 5820 Eastern Ave., Kentwood, today, Wednesday, April 6, through Friday, April 8. Applications must be received at the District Office no later than 4 p.m. EST on April 11.

 

Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted or reviewed under any circumstances, according to the announcement. 

 

The Executive Committee of the Board will review all applications on April 13. A special board meeting will be held on April 25 to interview candidates. All board meetings will be conducted in open session. Additional meetings will be held as needed until a board majority appoints the replacement in an open meeting.
