Kentwood’s 62-B District Court and Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services are hosting a workshop to provide an up-close look into interpreting within a legal setting.

The workshop, titled “The Legal Interpreting: Practice Excellence,” is for interpreters, deaf interpreters and interpreter training program students who want to gain a broader perspective and understanding of the interpreter’s role within a legal setting. The event will take place at the Kentwood Justice Center, 4740 Walma Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This workshop is an opportunity for the court to come together within the community we serve to provide a clearer understanding of a legal setting,” said Kentwood Attorney Magistrate Sharon Brinks. “The knowledge gained of why the court is here and what to expect provides access to justice for all citizens no matter one’s background or ability.”

The workshop will feature veteran interpreters Jamie Rix and Erica Allen, who have combined interpretation experience of 37 years. Brinks will oversee the workshop and provide an educational insight from her experience of working in a legal setting.

“Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services advocates for and supports the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities in various aspects of their lives,” said Nancy Cluley, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services community liaison and hearing assistive technology specialist.  “It might be in the doctor’s office, courtroom or any situation where communication is essential.”

The event costs $165, which includes lunch. More information can be found at http://deafhhs.org/events/.
